Julián Is a Mermaid, by Jessica Love

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Young Julián lives with his abuela and is obsessed with mermaids. He imagines taking off his clothes, growing a tail, and swimming freely through the blue-tinted water with swirls of fish and stingrays. After spying some women on a train dressed as mermaids, Julián later tells his abuela, "I am also a mermaid," then proceeds to wrap a curtain around his waist as a "tail." Ferns in his hair complete the fantastical look, and when his grandmother catches him —is he in trouble? Not at all! In fact, she takes Julián to a festival where people are dressed as fantastically as Julián. Love couples the spare narrative with vivid, imaginative, and breathtaking illustrations. VERDICT A heartwarming must-have for one-on-one and small group sharing.—Amanda C. Buschmann, Carroll Elementary School, Houston

Review

This is Jessica Love’s debut picture book, and every choice she makes — the spare text, a color palette both muted and lively, full-bleed pages that make even subway cars and apartment rooms feel as expansive as the ocean — imbues the story with charm, tenderness and humor…Alongside Julián, readers learn that anyone can be a mermaid: All it takes is love and acceptance, a little imagination and a big swishy tail.—The New York Times Book ReviewLove couples the spare narrative with vivid, imaginative, and breathtaking illustrations. A heartwarming must-have for one-on-one and small group sharing.—School Library Journal (starred review)Refreshingly, Spanish words aren't italicized. Though it could easily feel preachy, this charmingly subversive tale instead offers a simple yet powerful story of the importance of being seen and affirmed.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)[Julian] is, in a word, fabulous. Love lets an anxious beat pass before Abuela takes Julián by the hand, leading him to what some readers may recognize as the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. “Like you, mijo,” says Abuela. “Let’s join them.” Love’s deep empathy for her characters and her keen-eyed observations of urban life come together in a story of love, understanding, and embracing the mermaid within us all.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)The luminous, lovely, and layered art is what really makes the book...The concluding parade is a confectionary wonder of marine fantasy that many kids will yearn to join, and it might prompt adults to set up their own in- library mermaid celebrations. More importantly, though, those who’ve been shy about their love for dazzle and showmanship will love the idea of a formidable grandparental ally, and they will find this encouraging and empowering.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)Julián’s emotional journey takes on depth through small but important details: a wary look in the mirror, a slight inward slump of the shoulders, a chin held high while marching down the street. Love uses vibrant watercolors with gouache and ink and a lively style to create scenes that splash and swirl to life on the page.—The Horn Book (starred review)Across her watercolor, gouache and ink spreads, Love captures the transformative power of being seen...Love's affecting combination of the literary and the visual results in a powerful affirmation of individuality, creative expression and unconditional acceptance.—Shelf Awareness for Readers (starred review)Love’s painted scenes glow against muted backgrounds, with saturated, opaque tones tracing the graceful shapes of the figures. They’re especially striking when Julián gets swept away in a vivid underwater fantasy: a school of sea creatures whirls around him as he transforms into a mermaid. That scene is nicely replicated when he arrives at the parade, which is populated by scores of people in a wide variety of inventive costumes. The affectionate depiction of a broad range of body types and skin tones makes this particularly cheery.—BooklistThis beautiful book is one of the very few picture books about a gender non-conforming child. Yet it feels like a celebration of all children who want to do things differently than the parental figures in their lives—and a love letter to the grownups who deeply understand them.—GothamistThere is nothing about this book that is forgettable. In fact, you may have a hard time not thinking long and hard about it after you put it down. A book for mermaids and boys and girls and parents and teachers and booksellers and librarians and . . . Let’s just simplify things and say it’s a book for the human race.—Betsy BirdJessica Love’s vivid watercolor and gouache illustrations are made even brighter by her decision to paint on brown paper; the richly colored palette pops off the pages, and abundant character is conveyed via the subtlest of facial expressions and body language. Also subtle—and terrifically poignant—is the eloquent encouragement of Abuela’s spare words. A book for the ages, Julián Is a Mermaid is going to make a big splash.—BookPageThe illustrations couldn’t be more beautiful, and I love how Julián’s grandmother accepts him for exactly who he is...I’m so grateful for books like these that help foster acceptance and understanding from a young age.—A Cup of Jo (blog)Julián Is a Mermaid makes a fine addition to the best LBGT children’s books.—Brain Pickings (blog)Groundbreaking...here’s a happy picture book that challenges traditional gender stereotypes, rendering one boy free to be himself.—San Francisco ChronicleRight now, I just finished reading ‘Julián Is a Mermaid,’ by Jessica Love, which is an awesome picture book, one of my favorites, and I won’t spoil the end for you, but it has something to do with the mermaid parade.—Charles George Esperanza, The New York TimesIt’s a story of a little boy who is taken with some elegant costumes, and decides to fashion one of his own. I just received this book yesterday. Unfortunately, last night I saw a story on Facebook about parents who allowed their 11-year-old son to dress as a woman and perform in bars. I am not homophobic, but I am very tired reading about parents who want their child to decide what gender THEY want to be. This book received rave reviews and I get that it checks many boxes .. The little boy is African American, he wants to be a mermaid, and the book is partially in Spanish. If you like books that are very politically correct ... this is the book for you. This is not a book I would purchase for my grandkids. I am sure I will be getting a lot of criticism for my review, but it is how I feel.

As other reviewers have noted, this is one of the few books about boys who go against masculine norms that doesn't spend most of the pages focused on people who oppose or downright bully the boy for his preferences. In fact, there is no time spent on negative feedback. Instead, the boy stays true to himself, shows resourcefulness and creativity and authenticity, and his abuela recognizes it and immediately becomes his ally. It's a beautiful story and the art is mesmerizing. We love and will cherish this book.

Let me start off by saying that this is a gorgeous book. The illustrations are just magical and very well done. I also really appreciate the representation in the book. You see various skin tones, hair types, and body types! Its also great to NOT see a story where the child only comes to accept themselves AFTER being bullied. This book is pure celebration. Julian is living his best life as is, and thats what kids need to see. Representation doesnt also need to include the child being torn down/bullied. I also appreciate that this book wasnt too long winded. I can get through this with a squirmy 4-5 yr old no problem. I would recommend this book for a preschooler or kindergartener.

This is a gorgeously illustrated picture book with a fantastic, simple story. Julian is a boy who wishes to be a beautiful, flowy-haired, swishy-tailed mermaid. His abuela helps him realize his dream. The end. Adults will recognize that, although Abuela might want to scold Julian for kinda-sorta destroying the house in his quest to become a sea creature, she perhaps recognizes that now is not the moment to chide, but rather to show him her unconditional love and support. I appreciated that nobody in this book tells Julian he can't be a mermaid. So many books about gender-nonconforming children spend too much time focusing on the naysayers. Well, this book is all about Julian and his fabulousness. My 3.5yo son and I both enjoyed reading this book multiple times already, and it's been here for less than 12 hours! Highly recommend.

I love this book. I only wish it had been available years ago when my son was in full dress up as Elsa mode. There is so much emphasis on hyper femininity with isles of pink and masculinity it is so nice to see a realistic depiction of people. Boys can and do like beautiful things. I definitely recommend this book- most especially to families with children who don't fit a rigid gender expectation. As and artist myself, I just love the illustrations. They are beautiful.

We have found mostly gender non-conforming books where GNC children experience some prejudice and overcome it. I see a place for those books. I also think that sometimes it is important to be able to just shine. This is the book for that.

Hands down, one of my new favorite books. It's too good to keep within my household walls so I purchased extra copies for family and friends. The illustrations are beautiful and enchanting. Jessica Love manages to convey the deepest emotions with the simplest expressions. The story is one of imagination and acceptation. Light on words (which I am usually a fan of), the elegant illustrations are the star of the story. Highly recommend.

There is a moment of uncertainty - when Julian has been thoroughly swept up into his vision of himself as a mermaid and, for a second, his abuela seems disapproving - but then we realize it is not disapproval of Julian's vision, but his abuela's realization that she can improve his vision by adding a beautiful element ito his costume before leading him out to join in the mermaid parade...the illustrations are gorgeous and the story is one of true love, acceptance and understanding.

Good book, alot of Latin though but it does a good job exposing who the Edomites are today as they have hidden their true identity from the world but this book exposes them. If you are apart of the 12 tribes that have been scattered abroad then this is another must have book in addition to the itinerary of Benjamin Tedula

REALLY NO INFORMATION NO EDUCATION A WASTE OF MONEY .I GOT THE SAME FROM THE BACK OF A BREAKFEAST CEREAL

Save your money

We now know who the Edomites are. The Enemies of YAHUAH

Great book for Hebrew Israelites to read , Shelom

Excellent

Some of it was not translated and you can get the same conclusion by studying the scripture. Worth buying for serious researchers. And the price is good.

Although this item as it is has very good information, It is not a Book, but either a Thesis or an essay. Overall those who are not astute to academia, well they would not comprehend it.

Pendred Noyce has created a very inviting look into the historical world of women in science. Each woman contributed to her field against the greatest of odds. The paths that had to be single handedly forged by these pioneers was no small feat. As interesting a narrative as it is for the development of science I found it even more compelling as a voice for women's role in society. It paints a very clear picture of the systemic bias that is still evidenced in institutional sexism today. The is a must read foundation book for young men and women to begin to understand our society today. Great job, Pendred Noyce.

I appreciated the emphasis on studious preparation for work, how to obtain a mentor, traits to seek in a spouse who would be supportive.

Great book!

Got this for my scientist niece. Should be inspiring

"Why has woman passion, intellect, moral activity--these three--and a place in society where no one of the three can be exercised?" Florence Nightingale in "Cassandra"Florence Nightingale conjurers up an image of a compassionate woman tenderly caring for war wounded men. She is remembered as a nurse--a role consistent with social expectations of women as mothers and nurturers. We may know that she revolutionized hospital care and inspired the founding of the Red Cross, but how many of us know that she loved mathematics and employed statistics in her research and created pie charts for her reports? Or that 'Crimean fever' left her in extreme pain and often bedridden while she continued her crusade? Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing based on evidence and experience--and mathematics.Nightingale was selfless and devout, like the Victorian model of womanhood. But her brilliant mind and willingness to go into the filth and gore of the battlefield and hospital instead of expected marriage and motherhood set her apart as a 'remarkable woman'.Pendred Noyce's book Magnificent Minds:16 Remarkable Women in Science & Medicine considers women from across history whose curiosity drove them to achieve important advances in physics, astronomy, chemistry and medicine. The book is beautifully presented with an historical time-line for each woman, a concise biography including both her private life and career, illustrations, and side bar explanations. The achievements of each woman is understandably presented in context of their time and from a historical perspective. The women include:Louise Bourgeois Boursier, 1563-1626, France, Midwife Maria Cunitz, 1610-1664, Poland and Germany, Astronomer Marie Meurdrac, 1610-1680, France, Chemist Laura Bassi, 1711-1778, Italy, Physicist Augusta Ada Bryon, Countess Lovelace, 1815-1852, England, Computing Science Florence Nightingale, 1820-1910, England, Mathematics Mary Putman Jacobi, 1842-1906, United States, Medial Science Sophie Kovalevskaya,1850-1891, Russia, Mathematics Marie Sklodowska Curie, 1867-1934, Poland and France, Physics Lise Meitner, 1878-1968, Austria, Physics Emmy Noeher, 1882-1935, Germany, Mathematics Barbara McClintock, 1902-1992, United States, Medical Sciences Grace Murray Hopper, 1906-1992, United States, Computer Science Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin,1910-1994, England, Chemistry Chien-Shiung Wu, 1912-1997, China and the United States, Physics Gertrude B. Elion,1918-1999, United States, Chemistry Each loved a challenge and desperately wanted to work and contribute to improve society and expand our understanding of the world.I was kept interested throughout the book and it left me wanting to know more. Happily, the author includes a reading list so one can learn more about each woman. This is a wonderful book for classroom use or to share with young women to encourage their dreams.I received a free ebook through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

It takes a little while for this book to get going -- the first 3 or 4 biographical sketches are about women so early in scientific history that there's not a whole lot of info about their lives and their science is incomplete (historical), so it's not included in great detail. But it warms up after that. The last few are very good, with excellent stories and better science. This is a visual book, laid out like a magazine. There are breakout boxes to explain historical contexts or scientific ideas. There are quote boxes. Lots of pictures. The language is very simple. I'm terrible at guessing these things, but I would say it's about a 7th or 8th grade level book. In any case it should be a straightforward, interesting read for young people (either male or female) interested in science. That being said, it is more of a history book than a science book. Just the intro to the science is included. But knowing about their lives is important. Very enjoyable, easy read.I got a free copy of an early ebook version of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book (that I received for free as an advanced reader copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review). Author Pendred E. Noyce did a great job of showing the struggles 16 women went through in order to do their science. Noyce also successfully showed the women's places in chronology through the use of timelines. She also expanded on some of the science, but this is definitely not a book about science; it is about the women, who despite the obstacles, made great contributions to science. A companion volume, Remarkable Minds: 16 More Pioneering Women in Science and Medicine, is due to come out in August 2015. I look forward to seeing whom Noyce will profile in this volume.I recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of science and for anyone who wants to encourage girls or women to enter STEM fields. I also strongly recommend Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA (who is not included in this book) by Brenda Maddox and Dorothy Hodgkin: A Life by Georgina Ferry (who is included in the book).

I was offered this book for free in exchange for a review. In general, the book is very inspirational, particularly to women. I had learned about some of the women that are mentioned in the book back when I was in grade school. However, the book covers way more detail and interesting facts about even those women, so every chapter definitely had something new to offer. Besides, I feel that through the stories of these sixteen women in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, computer science and medicine, this book gets you inspired to dream big and make a difference in this world. I would definitely recommend this book to any girl or young woman who aspire to make a difference. I cannot wait for my ten year old daughter to read this book when she gets a little older.

What the hell did I just read??? Muties...check. The Angel family...check. The butter lady??? *sigh* check. Now I know why the Mega Cities are so overcrowded. The cursed earth is no place for the weak and squeamish says the guy with nine eyeballs.

Judge Dredd Volume 3 continues the storyline from 2 with a vengeance. Not once did I have the desire to take a break from the story, and was disappointed when I hit the back cover. Duane Swierczynski captures the heart of the classic while giving Dredd a modern feel with a master's touch. I highly recommend this series for any Dredd fan, old or new.
