Two intersecting paths brought me to read T.S. Eliot's whimsical 1939 book of poetry, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." First, I have been reading poetry the past few weeks and was browsing the library for a short, unusual work. Second, I adopted a pet cat -- a little calico -- some months ago after more that 15 years without one. I had almost forgotten how companionable a cat could be. The new kitty inspired my reading of a so-so book or two. Then, the poetry and the cat led me to T.S. Eliot. In his book of practical cats, Old Possum, (1888 -- 1965), a great modernist poet, let his hair down. This little book, consists of 15 poems with the last one, "Cat Morgan Introduces Himself", added in 1952. The poems are short, rhythmical and rhymed. Eliot intended them for young children. They are delightful poetry in their own right with varied use of language and phrasing and poetic devices. The book became a famous musical and it is about a varied, eccentric menagerie of cats. The cats are recognizably feline and also manage to stand in for human types. The fourteen original poems tell an organized story with the first poem, "The Naming of Cats" setting the stage and the now penultimate poem, "The Ad-dressing of Cats" summarizing the story and bringing matters to a close. In between are 12 poems featuring a range of now famous cat characters.Every cat has "THREE DIFFERENT NAMES" we are told in the first poem: its given name, its particular name, and the name the cat keeps to itself. Which of the three names does Eliot use in the poems which follow? The poems tells the stories of cats with names such as Jennyanndots, the old Gumbie cat, the ill-fated Growltiger and his lady Griddlebone, and the obstinate Rum Tum Tugger. Eliot says of Rum Tum Tugger"For he will doAs he do doAnd there's no doing anything about it"!Further named cats include Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, full of destruction and mischief, Old Deuteronomy, the GREAT RUMPUSCAT, who defuses a dog fight, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, the Mystery Cat,Asparagus, Bustopher Jones, the man about town, and Skimbleshanks, the railway cat. With the possible exception of (Aspara)gus, these names appear to be particular rather than given names of the creatures. Then, Eliot returns in the 14th poem to offer thoughts on the nature of cats, and their difference from dogs:"Before a cat will condescendTo treat you as a trusted friend,Some little token of esteemIs needed, like a dish of cream:XXXXXXX XXXXXXA Cat's entitled to expectThese evidences of respect. And so in time you reach your aim,And finally call him by his NAME."These poems are a treat to read. I was able without much effort to project them on to my cat. The poems also reminded me of my young far away granddaughters. I hope to take and read this little book to them on my next visit.Robin Friedman

The literature is great, but the size of the print and the vividness of the print are disappointing. The font size is about a 7 or an 8, and the print is so light that it is difficult to read without readers. When I sit down to read a book for relaxation, I don't want to have to squint and struggle to read the print. There is plenty of blank space in the book to have increased the font size and making the font bold would have increased the enjoyment of the read tremendously.

My wife loved it! Came from the UK to the states quickly enough and packaged well. Almost brand new condition.Random fact: If you ever watch "Logan's Run", one of the characters in the movie quotes this book (also cited at the credits at the end).

Before seeing Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical, CATS!, I researched how he was inspired to write and stage this unusual production. When I discovered the inspiration came from the very British, T.S.Eliot, I had to read his book of verse before seeing the play. How did I ever miss this delightful look at the behavior of cats? As a cat lover and an Anglophile, I loved meeting village cats while traveling in England. On a visit to the home of the Bronte's in Haworth, West Yorkshire, I met Thomas, a tuxedo cat, who lived in the village. He was owned by no one. He spent his mornings in a bed at the travel agency, where he had his breakfast, and then he moseyed over to the Bronte Historical Society Museum for his dinner and some human attention. If T.S. Eliot had met Thomas, there would have been a very British verse about him included in this wonderful volume. Buy this book for your children or grandchildren. When read by you, it will make them let go of the video game or smart phone for awhile!!!

wonderful gift for my sister who lives in the redwood forest with her identical gray cats.....she loved it. nice and old.(the book)

Excellent! Fun book to read to my kids. Wonderful wordy and rhythmic poems about cats that we read aloud before bed. Just watch out for some racist Asian references that were common in T.S. Elliot's time.

This volume was purchased as a gift for my mother and she loved it. (I also read it.) Other reviewers commented on font size issues, but neither of us noticed a problem.

I had read this book before and loved it, but when I met Boris, a real, live version of Rum Tum Tugger, I had to buy a copy to show his owner. It is amazing how little had to be done to turn these poems into a great musical comedy. I am, of course, talking about Cats. Most of the poems went directly into the show without any change whatever in their wording, and only three songs were added. Let's give full credit to Mr. Webber, It took a musical genius to do that, and one of the added songs, Memories, could stand alone as a masterpiece in any company, but most of the delight of the show comes from the wonderful feline characters created in this book.Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Gus the theatre cat, Spindleshanks, Bustipher Brown, McCavity, Mr. Mistofflees, Mungo Jerry, and Rumpleteaser all moved effortlessly from page to stage with no changes. That has to be some sort of record. If you loved Cats (the show) you need to read this book. If you love cats (the critters) you'll want to read this book. If you like poetry, you should read this book. If you like dogs, read the battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles. (You can skip over the part about the intervention of the great rumpus cat.)It was written for his godchildren, but it's a great read for everyone. It's not expensive, so get it to read to your children, but read it for yourself first.

Every cat lover should read this. Every parent should read this to their kids. Every poetry lover should read it aloud to themselves!.

I have not actually completed this book, and it probably improves after the introduction and first section, but I read the first book and got really annoyed at the cliches about Afghanistan and how the author explained the people through Western metaphors, so I stopped reading and bought a history of Afghanistan by an Afghan. Therefore, I either recommend not reading this book, or if according to knowledgeable reviewers it gets better, then I recommend skipping forward to wherever it gets better. Overall, though, I think Afghanistan is one of those countries which outsiders have historically misunderstood even when they try to understand, so in the case of this country I think it’s best to start out with a history of Afghanistan by an Afghan. Also, I didn’t get the feeling from the bit that I read that this was a university style scholarly book so it wouldn’t be much use as a reference either.

Barfield brings an extremely useful combination of skills to bear on his explanation of Afghanistan. In his concise account of Afghani history over the last few centuries he draws on the ability of the social anthropologist to give us the whys of belief, behaviour and process that help us understand the whats of events. He also has the refreshing ability to draw on the whole range of sources in these explanations, including specifically Islamic analyses. One of the best things about this book is the way it avoids the convenient-thinking trap of "eternal Afghanistan": the author can draw sharp distinctions between elements of vigorous continuity in Afghani history and culture, and elements of dramatic and irreversible change. For students of Afghanistan as The Graveyard Of Imperial Ambition, I would rank this as one of the two most useful books to read, the other being Gen. Skeen's 1932 "Lessons In Imperial Rule", a cheerfully brisk booots-on-the-ground military analysis of why military invaders were inevitably bound for grief.

This is the best book if you really want to understand what happened in Afghanistan. This starts with very ancient history and works towards the more modern. He does a great job of delivering a ton of information in a concise and easy to read way. Yes, this book is academic. This is a serious book on a serious subject. It isn't designed for a housewife to read on the beach. If you're really interested in learning about Afghanistan you will need this book. He knocks it out of the park.

After reading this book, I feel that I have a much better understanding of Afghanistan, especially of the way the past explains the present. The author writes without frills and is not, for example, William Dalrymple (I strongly recommend "Return of a king", about the first contacts between Europe and Afghanistan), but he clearly knows the country very well and is quite convincing.I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because, in my opinion, the "cultural" of the title is quite weak compared to the "political". This is a pity because the author condemns the attempts to impose western cultural values on the local populations. I think he's right, but this issue could have been better developed.

Fascinating read. Many times you wonder about the countries that we hear about in the news and to completely understand the back-story it is important to pick up a book like this one.To call Afghanistan backward would be improper; to call them out of date would be accurate. The author takes is through the turmoil that the country has dealt with for nearly 3 centuries. The conquers and those that the people defeated. In the end you come out with a deep respect for these people but wonder what is the best course of action to take. Should the US support this country with troops and financial aid or would it be best to back out and allow the country to do what it has always done. The author makes the process much more convoluted when he clearly shows his bias against President Bush near the end of the book. He clearly does not appreciate the near complete withdrawal of troops after the defeat of the Taliban but then makes it clear that the problems that have arisen in the aftermath are issues that only Afghanistan can correct...so which is it?The fact that this country has so much potential and growth makes it a country to continue to watch for years to come.

A must read for any soldier or statesmen serving in AFGHANISTAN. An incredible historical account that puts all my observations in perspective. Young politically ambitious Afghans should read this book. It does not have the answers but certainly provides sound and logical advice. I personally knew that the rural Afghan seeks greater autonomy in his daily affairs and how actions by GIRoA to govern this rural constituency were counter productive. Still a tough problem, but this book offers not only suggestions, but much hope for the future. WELL DONE!!!!

Afghanistan is a notoriously complex country with a notoriously complex history. Barfield has done a fantastic job of presenting a balanced overview of its history. At times, my head spun as I tried to keep the long cast of characters straight, but when I finished I felt like I had a better grasp on Afghanistan than when I started. If I had to make a light criticism, I would say that the first half of the book is a bit tougher to read because it deals in demographics and geography. It reminded me a bit of of the early sections of Louis Dupree's book, Afghanistan. The book's biggest strength is the history of Afghanistan since 1901. (I felt like it was the most relevant part to understanding the US effort there.) Since 1901, every Afghan leader has been either killed or exiled. I thought that was a striking piece of information given the US's contentious relationship with President Karzai.I give the book five starts and a must read for anyone interested in the US effort in Afghanistan. For people who follow Afghanistan very closely, some of it will be a review, but I suspect Afghan watchers of all levels of expertise will benefit from reading this book.

Picking up where Hendrik left off with his first diary, he does not disappoint. Clever, touching, tender, witty, funny, it's written with truth and warmth. Hendrik really comes into his own, proving that one can still change and grow, and old dogs can learn new tricks! It's a book you can't wait to read through, but never want to end. I'm hoping there will be another installment to Hendrik's story-the world could do with more of Hendrik's insights. The characters are written so well you feel as if you know them, and their emotions are vividly portrayed.I understand the first book has been made into a television series in the Netherlands and hope at some point it will be available to be seen with subtitles here in the US. Until then- please, more Hendrik!!

Delightful story of a man keeping a journal in his nursing home, and the things that they do to entertain themselves.Totally enjoyed it.

Oh how I love Hendrik Groen! He is funny and witty and very realistic! I've read both his "diaries" and chuckled right out loud on many occasions!

A lovely sequel. Enjoyed the humour

I liked the first one a whole lot more, but this one was also very nice to read, and had a few good laughs reading it.

A delightful read.

I really enjoyed Hendrik's first diary when I read it just over a year ago and wondered when we would be hearing from him again. After a short break, he's back and this time he has more to say than just the ongoing shenanigans of the Old but not Dead club.We start with a bit of a catch up. There been a few changes - not really too surprising given the age of some of the cast - some more notable than others but the old by not dead club continues to wreak havoc and make mayhem with their outings. This time not only are they still doing their day trips but they have also decided that they should be trying cuisine from all four corners so they are also taking it in turns to choose a restaurant. They also plan a really rather ambitious outing. Away from the club, the friends and their peers in the home, along with the staff, provide more of their fair share of entertainment. Some rip-roaringly funny, others poignant and some a little more on the sad side. Also included are Hendrick's observations of not only life in the home but also life for his age-group outside. How things are changing for the elderly. We also have his reports and opinions on things that are going on in the world. Quite a lot of these are, understandably, centred around his own country and contained incidents and people who I have never heard of so that did distract me a little. I also can't remember the first book being quite as political as this one but I may be mis-remembering; I may just be personally more sensitive to that kind of thing at the moment. I did however find this follow up to be a little harder to read and definitely much darker than the first. I actually read it in shorter bursts than the first, needing a bit of respite along the way both to digest what I was reading and also to take a break away from it by reading other books in between. I can't remember needing to do that before. But then again, having had a rethink, the world is indeed a darker place on the whole than it was when his first book was set so maybe it's more accurate than I care to think about. Denial and all that jazz.Politics aside, I really did enjoy the remainder of this book. I just love Hendrick and his attitude. How he toys with the dark side of growing old but, at the same time, embraces the time he has left; determined to get the best from it. There's a lot of introspection in this book which even at my younger (in comparison) age I found quite interesting and definitely food for thought. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

On The Bright Side is the second instalment of The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, written by Dutch Care Facility resident, Hendrik Groen, alias Dutch librarian, Peter de Smet. Hendrik is now eighty-five and, after a year’s hiatus due to grief over the passing of his good friend, Eefje Brand, he has once again decided to note down the year’s events, starting in January 2015.The Old But Not Dead Club gets back into swing, with two new members replacing one deceased, and one now in the dementia ward. In addition to their usual outings, they resolve to enjoy ethnic dinners on a regular basis, and make another International foray. Despite Director Stelwagen’s efforts to minimise all pleasure while maximising her control over all residents, Henk and his cronies manage to stage an almost-complete coup of the Residents’ Committee. As well as events of note in his daily life, Groen also remarks on current affairs, including the antics of politicians, the salaries of executives, elections, corruption, the King, the Middle East, and news in the sphere of care facilities. Sometimes the anecdotes are probably funnier if the reader is familiar with Dutch personages, but often the commentary is applicable universally: just change the names.Of course, one hazard of living to a ripe old age like 85 (apart from the organ recital, in which those around you detail their ailing organs) is that friends and acquaintances begin to drop off the perch. Not unexpectedly a member of the Old But Not Dead club gets an adverse diagnosis. But perhaps most worrying for the club and the Residents Committee are the empty rooms, usually filled post-haste, but now unoccupied. Do these spell the closure and demolition of their abode?Amongst the spate of books about the elderly in care facilities that are meant to amuse or divert, (Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg’s The Little Old Lady Who… , Jonas Jonasson’s Hundred-Year-Old Man Who…) this one requires the least suspension of disbelief. It is realistic and funny without being far-fetched, making it the best of that bunch. Flawlessly translated from the original Dutch by Hester Velmans, this moving sequel again has humour, heartache and plenty to think about.

I found this book in the library at the end of 5th grade and read the first few chapters, the school year ended and I never finished because I switched schools. I spent 5 years looking for it and found it last year. It’s a marvelous work of literary fiction.

I really like this book, however I was forced to buy another copy after my previous one went missing. Since this book is getting on in years I was expecting a bit of wear and tear, but I could feel the fragility in the book. Its not coming apart at the seams, but neither is it perfect, which wasn't in my expectation. All in all a solid product.

I had the entire Dragonlance series when i was younger and eagerly read all of them in a few short months. I recently got a Kindle and was surprised to find the books on Amazon! :DI'm kind of disappointed though, as I can't find the second and third volumes for this particular series (The New Adventures):{

Good series for Dragonlance.

Exciting, interesting, thoroughly enjoyable

Loved it

After searching several hours for just an average fantasy book to steal my interest away from the Ranger's Apprentice series, I finally found this book. When I first looked at the cover I thought it was going to be just another lame book with another lame author trying to become the next J.R.R. Tolkien. But then I opened the book and began to read...The book starts out with a teen-aged girl waking up in the middle of a forest remembering nothing but her name, Nearra. Around her are three goblins trying to decide what her fate should be. Though Nearra is afraid she realizes she must calm herself and get away. So Nearra patiently waits for the perfect time to run and as soon as the goblins get into an in depth fight over her untimely end, she runs, grabbing a dead branch for protection along the way. When the goblins catch up to her, they look around in fear before running themselves. Nearra has a moments time to catch her breath before the powerful dragonfear sweeps over her. She turns around to face this new threat and finds herself face to face with a green dragon, Slean. Her arms and hands begin to tingle but she fights the fear down. Suddenly, the dragon falls over asleep and the pain in her arms subsides. Nearra hears a voice call out to her and she turns around yet again to meet this next turn of events. Here she is introduced to a ranger, Davyn, and a Wizard, Maddoc. This begins the unlikely journey that Nearra knows she must take if ever she wishes to regain her past. Along the way Nearra makes new acquaintances including a wanna-be-wizard kender, a warrior trainee, a mix-breed elf, and a very upset minotaur, all of which swear to help her regain what she has lost at any cost... Until one commits the ultimate betrayel. This book will entice you into reading it from the moment you open it. You should probably wait until you have a good chunk of time (three to four hours) before reading it though, because once you start, you will be unable to stop.

Nearra awakens in a forest to discover that she has lost her memories. In moments, she is attacked by goblins and then a green dragon, all intent on hurting her. She manages to escape with the help of others, and assembles a band of curious companions who wish to help her answer several questions, the most important of which is: will she ever get her memories back?Add these ingredients: a great cast of characters, a sizeable helping of high adventure, an equal sized helping of fun, a smackeral of romance and a pinch of humor in the right places. What you get is this book, a fine example of quest fiction for most ages (10 and up, the back cover says).

#286,765 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have read, and enjoyed many of Barclay's books, and this is the second Zack Walker book. As usual, lots of witty observations about the newspaper industry, as well the ups and downs of Zack's family life. However, this books has a bit of a darker element than some of his other books. I don't want to alarm fans of the Zack Walker books too much, his wife and children come out fine, but a couple of likable characters don't fare as well.

In Linwood Barclay's fourth novel featuring trepid newspaper writer Zack Walker, Zack falls into two dangerous situations. His friend Trixie Snelling, accountant turned dominatrix, calls asking for help with a reporter who's been buzzing around her for a story. For reasons that later become clear, she's terrified of having her picture printed in the paper. And Zack's son Paul takes a job as a fry cook, only to discover that the trio of muscular Slavic women running the burger joint are serving up E. coli with their fries. The two threads of the story eventually combine, with both sets of bad guys intent on killing or maiming Zack, albeit with very different weapons. As usual, Zack's tendency to fall into trouble and not come clean about it soon enough also gets him in hot water at home. But what's unusual about this book is that the main story is punctuated by chapters detailing Trixie's colorful back story. This is necessary for our understanding, but for me these were the low points of the book. Frankly, I don't find Trixie a very interesting or sympathetic character. She's made a number of mistakes in her life that have put her friends and family in danger. And while one can try to exonerate her by saying that she was forced into them by her situation, well, she really wasn't. Given at various times in life a choice of two directions to take, she has invariably made the worse choice. So, I don't really care what happens to her. Barclay, however, tells a great story, and he ties up the various strands of the plot very neatly at the end. Still, if there's to be another Zack Walker novel, I'd prefer that the troubles Zack faces be closer to home. And, generally speaking, the more we see of Zack's friend, the enigmatic private eye Lawrence Jones, the better (provided that he, unlike Trixie in this outing, remains enigmatic).-- Debra Hamel

Stone rain is a part of the Zack Walker series. I have only read the last two, I enjoy the characters and the story line. I would recommend reading them in order;Bad Move, Bad Guys, Lone Wolf, and Stone Rain.I started with Lone Wolf and you have to read between the lines when the other stories are mentioned. no pun intended. :)The characters are very relatable, and you will be surprised what Zack manages to get him self into time and time again.EnjoyAlso, Try some other Linwood Barclay books. They are wonderful!

I am an avid reader and I must say this author brings the characters to life so much that at the end of the book I sat there crying. The main character Zach was no hero in my eyes but he was determined and steadfast in his goals. The main female characters had such realistic flaws and good traits they come to life as being real in my short time reading this.I have now placed Linwood Barclay on my favorite author list and can't wait to r4ead more of his work.

This is the 4th book in the series. All can be read and stand alone. Linwood Barclay has a unique writing style that at times makes you laugh out loud and at other times on the edge of your seat. This was one of those books. I didn't want it to end but I couldn't put it down. It made me really fear for what would happen to the characters in this book. I highly recommend you read it.

This book was okay, but not the most exciting of it's kind that I have ever read. For one thing, I had to get used to the "F" word being used in every other sentence of dialogue. Other reviewers have stated that it was very humorous. It was a little, but not that much. I bought a couple of other Zach Walker books based on Barclay's "The Accident", so I hope they are much better than this one. To me, it didn't live up to it's hype.

It's not the usual type of his books I read but as he didn't have any released yet that I hadn't read I decided to give the Zack Walker books a chance. I really enjoyed all four of them. Again, not his usual type of mysteries but very entertaining. I gave it four stars because it's a little different kind of mystery. For light reading I would recommend all of them.

Linwwood Barclay is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors in the genre. Sad sack hero Zack Walker, sci-fi writer and newspaper man and such a great family man can manage to find more convoluted troubles and this one gives his wife, Sarah her own pot of trouble. Zack Walker stories are so real. You can see the twists and laugh as he gets in deeper and deeper. This fourth book in the series is one of the better mysteries. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
