This is probably one of the most objective biographies I've ever read. While it doesn't delve in depth about the more profane rituals Crowley undertook, its nonetheless a very very satisfactory read in terms of both understanding the person and the environment that molded him. This is definitely a must read for anyone interested in Crowley, let alone Thelema. Its a very thick read, and the edition I purchased had a few pictures relevant to the passages, but overall its a very poignant look at one of the more controversial figures of history.
I’m gobsmacked! The best bio on The Beast ever written. Absolutely riveting. The author brings you right into Crowley’s world. Amazing!
And absolutely fantastic biography. Dr. K put a LOT of work into researching this book. The prologue explains the lengths he went through to write it; looking through peoples' journals, and secret archives. This book is extremely unbiased, it doesn't paint Crowley as being an angel, and it doesn't make him look like a satan worshipper like the rest of the biographies I've read. This, in my opinion is the ultimate source for information on Crowley. It talks about his family's origin and his father's company, as well as Crowley's formative years, and college years. It features some of the most beautiful poetry I've ever read, that I didn't know Crowley wrote. Also, there are a lot of vivid descriptions of rituals Crowley performed, and they are re-written perfectly without some type of nefarious, made up details ike the rest of the books. Dr. Kaczynski has been in the OTO since the 1970s and he has a Ph.D in Psychology, and is currently a professor. He understands the importance of credibility and sufficient research. This is the ultimate source book for info on Crowley.
The story of one of history's most fascinating, influential but much maligned and misunderstood characters is brought to life in what must now be the definitive biography of Aleister Crowley. Dr. Kaczynski's magnum opus is meticulously researched and presented away from the Daily Mail/John Bull type sensationalism that normally surrounds anything bearing Aleister Crowley's name. That is not to say that Dr. Kaczynski is an apologist for some of the sometimes bizarre behavior from Crowley, he attempts to present both sides of the story, providing also background to the events which ultimately lets the reader decide. Be warned, this is not a short read, it is a very compelling and richly detailed journey through the life and adventures of the one and only Aleister Crowley.
Richard Kaczynski has truly done it. He has painted this most wondrous masterpiece using words as his medium.Here we see the real Aleister Crowley. The weak and the strong. unsure and laser focused driven prophet.I was lured in and could not stop to eat. I laughed and at times I cried.This work will be the standard for generations to come. and should be required reading for Thelemites everywhere.Did I mention I have read and reread this tome 3 times?

Essential reading for anyone interested in Western Mysteries, the occult, esoteric or counter culture. Doesn’t contain the creepiness that sometimes comes with people’s interest in Aleister Crowley.
This remains THE best book on Crowley. I have only one complaint. It becomes an apologia of sorts for the OTO. I don't care what any court says. This OTO is NOT the one Crowley ran. That organization ended with the death of Karl Germer in 1962. Grady McMurtry did NOT have the right to reinvigorate the group. The power given him by Crowley was limited to California and subject to the will of his chosen successor, Germer, who took great steps to prevent McMurtry from doing what he eventually did.As a result, given that the OTO obtained the copyrights to Crowley's material, it has, Magickally speaking, been rendered null and void. The work of Crowley must be channeled anew whether from Aiwass or whatever source, but the current work is clandestine, and, has been demonstrated time and again by the debacles facing the Magick community, is cursed.
