In 1935, in one of FDR's major Supreme Court victories, the Court upheld the government's banning of gold clauses in private financial agreements. These clauses, which at one time were frequently employed, required the payment of a debt either in regular currency or in gold depending upon the wishes of the creditor. FDR through Congress cancelled these clauses in order to depreciate U.S. currency as one tool to fight the Depression. Yet, as important as is this case, I believe this is perhaps the first book-length study of the case. The author is a Professor of International Economics at UCLA.Perhaps one reason for so little attention to the decision is that to fully understand the litigation, one must master the economic dimensions of the gold clause issue. The author devotes the first 118 pages of the book to explaining why the decision was so vital to FDR's tools in fighting the Depression. As an economist, he is well qualified to discuss this background--and I think this is the part of the book that he is really excited about, less so for the legal dimensions. The author writes for the economic layperson (such as myself) quite well, but at times I found it a bit challenging to ingest all this technical analysis. Probably true as well was I wanted to get the Court discussion, and my impatience may have interfered with patiently reading the economic analysis. That being said, the author makes these economic concepts understandable, and the reader can't really grasp the crucial importance of the decision without a healthy dose of this economic background. The author devotes 68 pages to the legal dimensions of the issue. He discusses how the cases got to the Court; profiles the nine justices, highlighting the importance of the "four horsemen"; recapitulates the arguments made on both sides; and discusses FDR's strategy should the Court hold against the government. One interesting facet is that the author identifies how many of the very same arguments were made recently in some Argentina litigation. The dual focus of economics and law produces a very searching and informative analysis. The author's Introduction gives the reader a quick overview of the issues. As well, the author has included an extensive Time Line, and an interesting Dramatis Personae consisting of short profiles of the key players including the White House, the Senators, the Economists, and the Justices. Extensive notes and a helpful bibliography are also included. Many photographs and economic charts are also presented. This is a challenging issue to discuss in a meaningful fashion, and the author is to be commended not only for undertaking his analysis but also for doing it in so skillful a manner.

This is a really excellent book about a fascinating topic! Highly recommended.Roosevelt’s decision to abandon the gold standard was a watershed moment in the Great Depression and arguably a watershed moment in monetary history. What is less appreciated is how complex this action was. Most debt contracts at the time had a gold clause. Unless these clauses were annulled, devaluation would have led the debts of many Americans (households, corporations, and the government) to skyrocket in dollar terms. This would have been potentially catastrophic. The government thus decided to retroactively annul these gold clauses. … Yes, that sounds like abrogation of property rights; sounds like something we associate with Argentina as opposed to the US. But it happened in the US only 85 years ago and was ultimately upheld by the courts.Edwards tells the story of these events – why Roosevelt did it and why the courts allowed it – in a fast-paced, exciting manner.

As an economic history nerd I can only applaud the work of my UCLA colleague Sebastian Edwards in his vibrant telling the story of the long forgotten Supreme Court showdown over the United States’ abrogation of contracts written with the gold clause. Remembering the inflation of the Civil War greenback era, most creditors demanded gold clauses in debt contracts in which they would be repaid in in either gold or its paper money equivalent value. This system worked fine until the onset of the Great Depression. It is here where Edwards begins his story as President Roosevelt adopts an inflationist policy by first abandoning the gold standard by requiring all citizens to turn in their physical gold at the then $20.67/ounce price. Then in June 1933 Congress adopts a joint resolution authorizing Roosevelt to increase the price of gold which he ultimately does to $35/ounce and the legislation abrogates the gold clause in all contracts. Indeed, most economists credit the early recovery from the depression directly to the monetary easing associated with Roosevelt’s gold policies. If Congress hadn’t abrogated the gold clause all debts would have been written up to reflect the devaluation by 69%. Thus it would require a payment of approximately $1700 to repay a nominal debt of $1,000. Needless to say a host of bankruptcies would have ensued.Of course several creditors sued and Edwards skillfully moves the action from Roosevelt and Congress to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that it was in Congress’ power to alter private contracts, but it was not in its power to alter U.S. government debt. However, the court ruled that as of the date of the Joint Resolution gold was still trading at $20.67/ounce and Americans were not allowed to possess physical gold at that time. Hence there would be no damages. A brilliant 5-4 ruling by Chief Justice Hughes. The reason why these cases have been forgotten is that if they went the other way all hell would have broken loose. Instead of rallying as the stock market did after the ruling, stocks likely would have crashed. It would have triggered a constitutional crisis with Court versus the other two branches of government. Indeed the lead up to the ruling was a precursor to the 1937 court fight that Roosevelt would have.As an aside Edwards notes that the United States had a treaty with Panama concerning the lease payments for the Panama Canal. That treaty had a gold clause in it. After a long negotiation in 1939 the lease payment was increased retroactive to 1934 thereby reflecting the dollar devaluation. Thus, the U.S. made good on its international treaty obligations.“American Default” is a worthy addition to the economics literature of the Great Depression. It should be read with the works of Friedman & Schwartz, Bernanke, Irwin, Eichengreen and Sumner. And because it is more a history book than an economics book the lay reader should find it very readable. Further given the rising debt/GDP ratio in the U.S. when coupled with even larger unfunded liabilities, the idea of a 21st century American default is not totally improbable.

I was expecting less photos and more text on the history of each major linen manufacturer. THe photos were very good though. Having a price range is good however it would be more useful to give a change in price over the years. These cloths have been collected over a long time and the author should have an idea of the appreciation of the items.A rarity rating would have been useful too.I enjoyed flicking through it but would I have bought it if I hadn't done that first. Maybe not.

Very nice!

Great book.

Great pictures in this book. The background information was very helpful. I would recommend this to anyone that has an interest in vintage tablecloths. The pricing guide was also very useful.

good book

GREAT BOOK

What a wonderful surprise I had as I reviewed the vintage tablecloths and were so happy to see so many of my Dad's designs and also see that he was mentioned in many of them. This is the first book I have that recognizes John Madsen as the designer and holder of some patents (which I never knew about). My sister, brother and I have enjoyed the thrill of looking and purchasing his tablecloths and have a nice selection - many of which we remember seeing him work on. This book has helped us so much in recognizing his work and learning more about Wilendure who he worked for. We thank Yvonne Barineau for providing this information in our search. The pictures are clear, and the information provided is wonderful. Thank you.......Sue Nilsen

I was so thrilled when this book arrived to see not only BEAUTIFUL color photos, but accurate facts. The manufacturer section is the most concrete information yet published...it was a huge help in dating my own collection. And did I mention the GORGEOUS pictures???? This book is tops!

This version is formatted terribly! I'm not sure what is going on here. It has not title page or anything. It literally looks like it's been copy and pasted off the internet with weird spacing, paragraph breaks and numbers in brackets in the middle of sentences like you would see if you were reading passages off the internet. And on the last page, it says: "Made in the USALexington, KY09 February 2018"Which is the date I ordered it! This does not appear to be a reputable book publisher/dealer and quite honestly, it's so hard to read with this formatting that I honestly just want me money back!Don't buy this version! Hope this helps someone else out there.

With some shame, I admit this is the first Greene novel I've read. And it's said to be his most powerful. However, I found myself indifferent to the individuals involved, and, most specifically, to the central figure of the "whiskey priest" who mea culpa's his way through his flight, especially after his own realization of his "indifferent piety" of the years of living comfortably and being respected. I did, however, sympathize with his inability to confess the sin of breaking the vow of chastity when he had loved the outcome of the 'sin' - his child (perhaps loved more in theory, as he had little if any contact with it). Coming to the end, and with complete lack of interest in the fate of the priest, I was left with an appreciation of fine writing and uncomfortable insights into the human character (this after reading Tolstoy's Resurrection which is teeming with such insights). Certainly I'll continue with other Greene novels - but will not revisit this one.

It is a terribly sad, but good book. I had never read Graham Greene, although I had certainly heard of him. I had earlier dismissed him as a sort of John Le Carre, writing about the complexities of international espionage. However, then Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa praised The Power and the Glory in Vargas Llosa's series of essays on various writers entitled The Truth of Lies, and so I thought that I would give the book a shot.It is not an easy read nor, at first glance, an uplifting one, although one can seem moments of redemption and revelation laid out in the book. Everything is set in a Mexican state that I believe is meant to represent Tabasco during the 1920's, shortly after the Institutional Revolutionary Party's ascension to power. At that time, and in that state, it seems that the Mexican government was carrying out a pitiless purge of Roman Catholic priests, and although there were a number of believers, they observed the Catholic rites underground. It appears that the government effected the purge using philosophical observations akin to Lenin's observation that religion is the opiate of the masses.Greene had spent time in Mexico prior to writing the novel, and wrote a memoir that expressed his loathing for the country and all that he saw. And certainly, both the foreigners and the natives living in the novel's setting are deeply unhappy. The former suffer from a profound sense of dislocation, and often dream of going home. The latter are oppressed by unbelievably cruel hardships, including political repression and hunger.Vargas Llosa explained that the novel presented a conflict between the upright Lieutenant, who is totally committed to his secular beliefs and hopes to extirpate the church in order to do away with obscurantism in the hopes of bringing paradise to this world. His bite noire is a priest, who is sinful, guilty of fornicating and drinking and yet, much more human than the rigid Lieutenant. However, I did not see it that way. The Lieutenant is admirable in his own way, particularly when compared to his corrupt and complacent superiors. However, Greene paints the Lieutenant in broad brush strokes and spends relatively little time with him. Greene spends far more time with the corrupted "whiskey-priest," and the real conflict is between the whisky-priest's attempts to discern the nature of his own calling, which he pursues with increasing diligence, which is remarkable considering horrific suffering that he passes through, including near starvation. Still, the whiskey priest cannot decide if he was closer to God when he was a younger priest, relatively well to do and with a parish, or if he is closer now, even if he spends the night in jail and even if he robs rotten meat from a dog because he is hungry. For me, Greene uses the whiskey-priest to explore various theological conundrums. As the novel progresses, we see that the whiskey-priest is becoming weary of life, which is understandable because he has been on the run for eight years. And yet, when he returns to the very state where the police are chasing him, ostensibly to hear the last confession of a murderer, Greene makes clear that in part, the whiskey priest has begun to despair of this life. Thus, Greene asks us to ask if the priest's decision to return is a Christ-like gesture, in which he willingly sacrifices his own life for the betterment of another? Or it is a selfish gesture - in which his desire to die is in a way reflective of a selfish desire to cease living and thus cease suffering? On that note, a remarkable aspect of the novel is the tremendous hatred that nearly every character feels towards this world. And yet, that contributes to the novel's power, because Christianity indeed deals and indeed to a degree condones a contempt for this life.Regardless of the feelings that he may have harbored about Mexico, Greene sets out the priest's struggles with great subtlety and precision, showing him advancing towards a nearly beatific state at times while alternatively feeling repulsed and disgusted by the people around him. At each point, we are encouraged to ask if the priest is moving closer to God, or indeed farther away.

"The Power and the Glory" has been called Graham Greene's masterpiece and after having read it I must admit I agree. I am hesitant to compare any novel to Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" but I would be remiss to say that it did not remind me of what many scholars consider one of the greatest novels ever written.Set in a remote part of Southern Mexico where the Catholic Church and priests have been outlawed and hunted down by a political/military group called the Red Shirts (Communists), it reveals the undying faith of the peasant classes and the corrupt leaders and fat cats who are suppose to be God's representatives on earth (the church, priests, bishops, etc.).The lone priest left in the area, a person all to human with a woeful record of debauchery, is hunted down throughout the book by the Red Shirts and a reward has been placed on his head. It is through the priest's capacity to allude capture that we learn how the situation in this part of Mexico developed. This book is based on real life events and Mr. Greene's analysis of the situation (he was a reporter during the upheaval) is both fascinating, enthralling, and heart wrenchingly accurate. As a Catholic, it had me cringing and yet I would strongly recommend this book to all Catholics and all people of different faiths. An amazingly powerful piece of writing.

This is not a review of the story but rather this edition.HORRIBLE EDITION. Imagine reading a sentence where out ofnowhere there is a huge blank space.Imagine reading a conversation where there are not any line breaks between a change in speakers.I wish I could return it but I missed the deadline. I encourage you to learn from my mistake.

“Hello World is an action-packed read during which you will be outraged, provoked, and challenged. The numerous, meticulously researched examples reveal the astonishing new world we’re living in, one where secret decisions with ambiguous goals are deciding our individual and collective fates.” - Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction“Expertly told, wise and with a lightness of touch, Hannah Fry’s brilliant exploration of how we live our lives in the age of AI will prompt arguments in pubs and over dinner tables for years to come.” - Adam Rutherford, author of A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived“Computers used to be tools, then they were toys, and now they’re all around us. You couldn’t ask for a better guide to this bewildering new world than Hannah Fry, who fills Hello World with wit, storytelling, and superbly clear insight. Bravo!” - Tim Harford, author of Fifty Inventions That Shaped the Modern Economy“Hannah Fry is one of the best explainers on the planet. In Hello World, she takes a serious subject and leavens it delightfully with her clear writing and captivating stories, and her trademark sense of humor and fun.” - Steven Strogatz, professor of mathematics, Cornell University, and author of The Joy of x“Hello World is a brisk and friendly guidebook to the algorithms all around us.” - Jordan Ellenberg, author of How Not to Be Wrong“Hello World is a gem of accessible science writing. The author addresses a subclass of Algorithms (defined p.7ff) and their effects, and potential effects, on society. The subclass of algorithms addressed, which could reasonable be called computer programs, are those that can have a significant effect on people's lives. What she is not talking about are things like the algorithm used to calculate a tangent or to multiply two matrices. The algorithms address range from the massive data collected about people, used for advertising and other purposes, to potential design issues with self-driving cars, medical diagnosis, determining risk in the judicial system or the challenges in facial recognition. These are big tasks and, for the most part, usually considered human functions. Many of the algorithms involved are classed as 'machine-learning'.The author does a good job of pointing out some of the benefits and problems with these algorithms and provides some suggestions for the future. She did, however, miss one of the most important things to warn against: Do not allow Microsoft to provide any life critical programs. The best part of the book is the extensive end-notes. Although the author does not go into great details about the algorithms of interest, she does provide plenty of references which are useful for further research. From reading the book, and my own 40+ years in the computer field, the author appears to be more of a researcher about algorithms than an implementer of algorithms. This results, I think, in a little bit of a lack of understanding about how some algorithms actually work, and what information can be gleaned from their operation (I am especially concerned with the machine-learning programs).I also strongly recommend the author's other book, The Mathematics of Love: Patterns, Proofs, and the Search for the Ultimate Equation (TED Books)

I like Hannah Fry's writing style. It is engaging and moved through the stories and information in a captivating way.The topics are serious and interesting, never boring. It is a good challenge to consider the algorithms that we do not always put enough thought into.Worth a read, go for it.

I enjoyed reading this, the author writes well about a complex topic without trite simplification or boring detail. The conclusion is great: algorithms need to be contestable and transparent, as already know all human decisions need to be, because all make mistakes.

The author has a good writing style and is obviously a good researcher. She covers different aspects of what is called "AI" these days and points out the benefits/hazards of each; with examples. Without talking down or too many technical details she manages to explain what is happening; and some of how it's done. One could write a hundred (well some) SciFi stories in present day living from items picked up in the book :)

It was pretty good. In general, I thought the writing was good, and the subject matter important. However, I’m extremely familiar with these topics, so much of it was either known to me or slightly different cases than I already know. It felt like a more lighthearted version of Weapons Of Math Destruction(which is excellent btw).If you’re less familiar with algorithms, data products, and machine intelligence, this will likely be an interesting read.A few places I really appreciated were Fry's friendly writing, good examples, and obvious understanding.

This is an easy read and an entertaining, but highly useful book. Algorithms are increasingly impacting our lives, often in ways that we don't know. This book shows how they are being used and misused in retail, medicine, our justice system, in cars, and art. Hannah has taken a very complicated subject and made it understandable to anyone. Highly recommended.

Hannah Fry is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book is well written, engaging, and fun. I also learned a lot about coding, algorithms, and AI. Hannah writes with obvious subject matter expertise, but her book is engaging and interesting. A great read for anyone regardless of your background.

A well-balanced look at the impact of algorithms on our lives - some that you may never realized existed. You'll read examples that will make you hate them because of their horrible side effects, but then you'll read the marvelous influence they are having and incredible potential to bring about good. Hannah's mathematics background give her wisdom to understand this complex topic and to provide valuable recommendations on the way to a better future with algorithms.
