If you are looking to begin to prepare for a disaster with a bug-out bag, then this is a great starting place. This book gives you a great roadmap of things that should be included in your bug-out bag in the case of a disaster. My family has begun preparing for what-if scenarios by stockpiling certain items and making sure we are prepared for an emergency. However, I never really knew what we should prepare in the event we are forced out. The 50 things listed in this book make complete sense to me. From the portable water purifier to guns and ammo, the author defintely thought of everything, a majority of which I would never have thought of. This is a great starting guide to build your bug out bag!

I am by no means a survivalist and I have absolutely no clue what I would do in the middle of a disaster. Wulfe has put together a fantastic title on all of the essential things you'll need in the event of a disaster. You would be surprised at how accessible many of these items are and its realistic to put this bag together by the end of the week. Most people think remedy rather than prevention, but I think this is a great title we should all read.

This is a great book! I loved it , great tips for survival all in one book. The content was short , concise and filled with information. I love how the author singled out each object and explains how it can be used in a disaster situation. I was intrigued to have learnt that a face mask could be used to prevent the consequences of harmful substances being inhaled during a disaster, that was awesome! Highly recommended book

Great set of information, although I think if you got ir all your "bug out" bag would be a bit heavier than me (I am not a small guy). Good but brief explanations and comprehensive on what one might need/want. Makes one think through the tradeoffs. Original material and no come-on for a mailing list, which really does add credence to the material in my opinion.

Emergency preparedness doesn’t require unlimited funds or a PhD in Emergency. A little creativity and the right knowledge can help you prepare for a disaster. That is where this book comes in to being an essential part of that. It will give you the basics that are needed to survive. I highly recommend this book as a starting point to on the way to surviving.

This is an amazing guide book teaching you what are important items to bring and the reason why to put it inside your bug out bag! I find the book very useful and practical when it comes to a disaster situation by having the right and essential items. Highly recommended for anyone to get this book.

Hey what can I expect from a free book? But you have to realize as a survival instructor I have much higher expectations than the everyday person. It may very well be just what a beginning prepper needs.

All common sense things which most people should have anyway. But then again with common sense not very common these days for most of the population this would be helpful.

Review

“Vivid . . . . Striking. . . . A ringing paean to love in general: to the love between man and wife, parent and child, outsider and newcomer, pilgrims and promised land.” —The Washington Post“Powerful. . . . Moving. . . . [Henríquez has] myriad gifts as a writer.” —The New York Times“Passionate, powerful. . . . A triumph of storytelling. Henríquez pulls us into the lives of her characters with such mastery that we hang on to them just as fiercely as they hang on to one another and their dreams.” —Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk“Gripping, memorable. . . . A novel that can both make you think and break your heart.” —San Francisco Chronicle “A remarkable novel that every American should read.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune“Unfailingly well written and entertaining. . . . [Henríquez’s] stories illuminate the lives behind the current debates about Latino immigration.” —The New York Times Book Review “Lyrical. . . . This is a book about love, about how we seek to help those we love, sometimes with unforeseen and tragic consequences.” —The Dallas Morning News “Powerful. . . Henríquez gives us unforgettable characters . . . whose resilience yields a most profound and unexpected kind of beauty.” —Ruth Ozeki, author of A Tale for the Time Being “There’s an aura of benevolence in these pages. . . . Henríquez’s feat is to make the reader feel at home amid these good, likable people.” —The Wall Street Journal “Characters are as vivid as they are resilient. . . . [The] story is told from Alma and Mayor’s points of view, but their voices are interlaced with tales of dreams deferred from the other tenants.” —Elle “A lovingly woven portrait of how friendships sustain people, how people support one another, and how people make a home in unlikely places. . . . Henríquez offers up stories we need to hear and lets us sit with her characters in communion and even friendship.” —Christian Science Monitor “Unforgettable: an important story about family, community, and identity, told with elegance and compassion.” —Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins  “Passionate.” —O, the Oprah Magazine  “Henríquez distills the vast sea of immigrant stories into a small apartment building community in Delaware. . . . Through Henríquez’s unadorned prose, these immigrants’ struggles ring clear, their voices rising above that din of political debate.” —USA Today “An exquisite and profound novel of love, longing, and the resilience of the human spirit. . . . [These characters] leave an indelible mark on the heart.” —Gilbert King, author of Devil in the Grove  “Henríquez allows the characters to speak for themselves. . . . The politics of immigration, while never explicitly argued, remain subtly in play, as do more existential matters affecting immigrants, such as the mixed national and cultural allegiances and affiliations between the generations.” —Chicago Tribune “Distinctively compassionate and original. . . . Extraordinary.” —Heidi Julavits, author of The Vanishings  “[Henríquez is] a world-class stylist.” —Chicago Reader “Beautiful . . . Cristina Henríquez introduces us to . . . vibrant lives, to heartbreaking choices, to the tender beginnings of love, and to the humanity in every individual. Unforgettable.” —Esmeralda Santiago, author of Conquistadora

Arturo and Alma Rivera lived a happy life in Mexico until their beautiful teenage daughter, Maribel, sustains a serious injury in an accident. Unsure if she'll ever be the same again, they migrate to the United States—Delaware, specifically—where Maribel will be able to attend a special school and hopefully begin to recover some semblance of normalcy. But America is difficult for the Riveras—the job Arturo secures to sponsor their journey to America is brutal, Maribel doesn't seem to be making much progress in school, and Alma struggles with English, and trying to become acclimated to a different life."Because a place can do many things against you, and if it's your home or if it was your home at one time, you still love it. That's how it works."The one bright spot is that the Riveras meet Celia and Rafael Toro, who came to the U.S. years ago to escape the destruction and violence in Panama. The Toros are more settled into their American lives, although Celia in particular longs to return home, at least for a visit. And when their teenage son, Mayor, who struggles with self-confidence in the shadow of his more athletic, popular older brother, sets eyes on Maribel for the first time, he finds himself completely in her thrall, and wants nothing more to spend time with her, despite what others perceive as her challenges. As the relationship between the Riveras and the Toros grows stronger, it is tested—as are relationships within each family—by secrets, incorrect assumptions, fears, longing, and struggles. And a number of incidents occur which set in motion a chain of events which will affect each member of both families in vastly different ways.Cristina Henriquez's The Book of Unknown Americans gives a powerful and moving glimpse into the immigrant experience for many Latin American people. In addition to telling the story of the Rivera and Toro families, the plot is interwoven with brief testimonials from other neighbors, each of whom came from a different Latin American country and experienced different struggles and happinesses upon arriving in America. This is a book that makes you think a little bit more about the challenges and barriers people often deal with when coming to America, even legally.I thought this was a very captivating read, and Henriquez is an excellent storyteller. While some of her characters may seem familiar, I thought she imbued them with interesting characteristics and quirks that made them more complex. I read this book very quickly, and found it an emotionally rich story I'm still thinking about.

I choose this book because it seemingly told the story of an immigrant group that seems to be vilified and misunderstood. I wanted to understand and learn about their experience. This book was good, but I do agree with another reviewer who said it should be classified as Young Adult reading. I read this in a few hours. The writing was very simple. There were a few memorable & poetic lines, but not many. The story is told by the point of view of numerous characters. I enjoyed that aspect. The main characters were immigrants from various Central & South American countries, detailing their struggles to assimilate in a smaller city in Delaware. All of the characters lived in a rundown apartment building, and for the most part were close knit and supportive of each other. There was one main story that followed the lives of a Mexican couple and their beautiful daughter, Maribel, who legally immigrated. Maribel suffered a traumatic brain injury in Mexico, and the US was the place where the best schools were, so the family ventured to start a new life in Delaware with ultimately devastating and life altering results. I don't like to give spoilers, but this book is absorbing and a quick, fast read.

I really, really wanted to like this book because I was hoping that it would delve into Latin-American culture and provide a rich telling of the Latino experience in the US, but unfortunately that's not what I got. To be fair, I'd just read the Alchemist which set the bar pretty high. With that said, it didn't really matter. By page 30, I was just counting the pages until it was over.I'm being generous with my rating because I think there are many people who are completely removed from the Latino experience in this country and would find this book interesting and thought provoking. But it's so surface, that you're not going to get any real deep treatment on the subject.Education aside, I just couldn't invest in the story-telling. Several aspects of the book felt like rip-offs of other books (i.e. Women of Brewster Place, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) and it just didn't feel authentic to me. I didn't feel that the secondary characters were woven into the central plot well enough for me to really be interested in their backstory. Their inclusion in the book just felt like an after-thought - something to justify the title.I think the subject matter is one that deserves an entire library section and I'll continue to seek out books that provide me more perspective, but this just didn't satisfy.

This was a heart-rending story from beginning to end. There is a reason for these immigrants being called "unknown". Most people don't take the time or make the effort to know who they are and why they are here. Cristina Henriquez has done a wonderful job of integrating the family stories, showing how people bond when in need. I had no expectations going into the book. I let the author tell her story and was moved tremendously.

Review

"With her DIY Project Based Learning books, Heather opens up her extensive toolkit and invites fellow teachers to take a look―and borrow liberally. It’s a generous move by a teacher who has worked hard to develop her own, deep understanding of PBL and to design projects that resonate with students." --From the Foreword by Suzie Boss, Education Consultant and National Faculty Member for the Buck Institute for Education, Portland, Oregon "This book is worth your time. Heather Wolpert-Gawron’s conversational writing style and step-by-step guidance take you on a magical journey, energize you, and fill your head with new possibilities. These innovative teaching units, mix-and-match lessons, and ready-to-use tools provide a rich array of material to bring your classroom to life. Heather is a truly talented curriculum designer with a gift for inspiring and connecting with her readers." --Anne Jolly, PLC Consultant with Learning Forward and author of STEM by Design (Routledge, 2016) "Heather Wolpert-Gawron is that rare teacher that will go to any length to bring a subject to life. I know so, because as a quantum physicist at Caltech, I am invited to her classroom every year to help her students create powerful superhero origin stories that incorporate real science into their chosen superpowers. In this book, you will find Heather's philosophy on teaching math and science effectively, as well as fully developed lessons from which any teacher can draw to create their own Project Based Learning modules. Perhaps, most importantly, teachers will find here the inspiration and tools they need to unlock their very own superpowers, the ones that make students say years later, 'I had this one math teacher that made me fall in love with math.'" --Spyridon Michalakis, Research Scientist and Manager of Outreach, Institute for Quantum Information and Matter, California Institute of Technology "...this text would be beneficial for a teacher looking for alternate ways to assess their students in a meaningful way. I would also recommend this book to preservice teachers as it encompasses the NCTM Process Standards that are addressed in some state curricula." -- Katelyn Devine,Virginia Beach City Public Schools

This is an excellent book on project-based learning, one of the best I've read in fact. The author includes many step-by-step examples of projects she's used in her own classroom. You can use the projects as starters for your own classroom, or there also is a section on "mix-and-match lesson" which provides handouts and suggestions for the individual parts that make up her projects. Great ideas that really provide a fantastic framework for teachers looking for extra guidance on how to shift from a mostly teacher-directed classroom to one that incorporates much more PBL. I've read several PBL books, but this was the first one that motivated me to rethink my curriculum right now and make changes immediately. I've totally rewritten my next unit I'm covering based on ideas and advice from this book. This is largely because she frames it in such a straightforward and easy to adopt way. I HIGHLY recommend this book to teachers looking to have a more inquiry-based classroom.

This product helped me get a better handle on,what PBL is and had practical advice on how to begin.

I am fortunate enough to be a colleague of Ms. Wolpert and I know her to be an amazing resource for engaging students in their own learning. She teaches and inspires her kids to learn like their heads are on fire! This book is a gigantic step into remaking your classroom into a fully student based and exciting land of learning. Go for it!

From the Publisher

Each year half of America will be touched by the death of a friend or loved one. Bill Moyers, whose landmark PBS series on dying aired in September of 2000 (which listed Graceful Passages as a primary musical resource) writes, "Surveys show that Americans- including baby boomers (estimated at nearly 80 million people in their late forties and fifties) who are becoming aware of their own mortality while caring for their elderly parents- are exploring issues of death and dying with new openness. Awareness is growing that we can and must improve care at the end of life." Feature articles in Time, The Wall Street Journal and other mainstream media show growing attention to this issue. The wonder of life is often overlooked. The preciousness of being alive, of appreciating ourselves, each other, and our world, is sometimes the last thing we remember in our rush. Despite advances in medical science, we are neither capable of preventing our transition from this world nor in control of the timing. As reluctant as we may be to approach the subject, admitting our mortality is an important step toward embracing life on its own terms. Such an acceptance can profoundly support a recognition of the moment-by-moment gift of life itself. At any stage of life, suffering is increased by denial and resistance. This applies equally to those at the beginning, middle, or end of life. There is a need for effective, artful ways to ease the shift from resistance to acceptance, to address anyone who is going through or anticipating loss. Our response has been Graceful Passages, A Companion for Living and Dying, a 2-CD giftbook of spoken voices and music addressing this issue. We have recorded people, among whom are foremost experts in the field of loss and transition, speaking candidly on the key elements common to the dying process, themes which are relevant at any stage of life. These themes include: the process of letting go, elements of closure. giving and receiving love, forgiveness , appreciation of life, and continuity of spirit. The people we have selected as speakers, coming from different traditions, share an extraordinary quality of presence which infuses their words with a tender, universal eloquence. The messages they deliver are spoken in an atmosphere of peaceful honoring. To further enhance the delivery of these messages of acceptance, we have created music to support the psycho-spiritual transition observed in dying persons, created with the intention of gently addressing persons behind the resistance of their conscious defenses. This music is intended to provide an opportunity for all listeners to both relax and to feel supported in freely expressing feelings with or without words, thus more easily experiencing reconciliation, resolution and peaceful transitions, wherever they may be on the continuum of life. Our sincere appreciation to the Nathan Cummings Foundation, Fund For Global Awakening, and all who have contributed financially to this endeavor. We tithe 10% of this product to hospice and numerous organizations.

This is a lovely CD. There is a edition that has one disk with the music with spoken words and another disk with just the music. I like listening to both and would listen them them for days on end sometimes alternating between the disk. THere is very few CDs on the aspects of one's own death. This is a lovely one.

Listening to this is like getting a big hug from the universe! So powerful, thought-provoking and soothing, full of gems of wisdom, just simply phenomenal. One of the best things I ever gave as a gift to my best friend. She was fighting cancer and she listened to this as a daily ritual and speaking of it as a companion for living and dying, she was listening to the passages when she passed away. It's truly a gift and has a very special place in my heart.

This set was a gift to me during the last few months of my father's life. There are 2 CDs. One is poetic and soulful words with the music as background and the other is only music. I listened to one or the other nightly. It helped me to remember the Truth about life and death. I purchased this as a gift to a dear friend who is consciously dying. She can no longer read, but she said that she listens to it often because she can rest in the music and the softness of the words.

Top notch. Very graceful and respectful. Helpful even when going through difficult times personally. A friend of mine had this playing in the background as she did Healing Touch work on me. I relaxed very deeply and let go into the experience. I use it to play in the background to go to sleep at times. The messages are simple and stay with you. There is a wonderful variety of cultures and experiences; seriousness and mirth. Highly recommended.

A helpful resource for hospice volunteer to share with people of all faith traditions.

Not what I wanted. Sent it back

Beautiful - peaceful, very loving.
