Magdalena Droste studied art history and literature in Aachen and Marburg. She has worked at the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin since 1980 and is professor of art history at the BTU Cottbus since 1997. This is a great review of the school. Often books on Bauhaus concentrate on what happened post-school, or spend more time discussing the post-school careers of those that taught there. This book provides much more information on the school and explains much of why the movement was successful. I have a number of books on Bauhaus, when I was a student at FU Berlin my favorite Saturday trip was to The Bauhaus Archive Museum of Design.I find this book to be an excellent addition to my library.

This book is actually about the Bauhaus school. The author's main thrust is to provide a corrective to the Bauhaus mythology created by Walter Gropius at the time and long after. It gives a nuts and bolts description of how the school actually worked under its three directors. There are a good number of contemporary photographs that are interesting but of course they are in black-and-white and often not very large. There is a fair amount of art theoretical gobbledygook that is probably not much more comprehensible in the original German. On the positive side the book is inexpensive and quite good at what it attempts to do. On the other hand it may disappoint a casual reader who is looking for the usual lavish celebration of Bauhaus's influence on modernist design and architecture

First of all, a disclaimer: the author, Leon Waldoff, and my mother were first cousins (my mother was Sarah (Stein) Friedman, daughter of Abe and Annie Stein, who were Leon's "Uncle Abe and Aunt Anne"). In addition, I am mentioned a few times in the book because Leon found some of the information in the family genealogy and history that I compiled about 30 years ago useful in his research.Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading "A Story of Jewish Experience in Mississippi." Leon begins the book describing how his father and my grandfather left their home town south of Kiev, Ukraine, in the early 20th century and eventually made their way to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He traces the founding and growth of the Jewish community in and around Hattiesburg in those years, as well as his father's struggles and successes as a merchant before, during, and after the Great Depression.But the book goes way beyond those humble beginnings and, ultimately, relates the challenges of the Jewish minority in Mississippi (and elsewhere) in the 20th Century. These were people who sought to be accepted by the white majority while anti-Semitism swirled around them locally, nationally, and internationally. This was further complicated by tensions within the Jewish community among Jews who spoke out against segregation in the 1950s and 60s and those who were concerned that speaking out would feed greater anti-Semitism and, in some cases, Jews who supported continued segregation. In the final chapters, Leon describes the heroic efforts of Rabbi Mantinband in Hattiesburg, Rabbi Nussbaum in Jackson, Leon's brother-in-law with the Anti-Defamation League, and others who took courageous stands in support of the civil rights movement.The book is deeply researched, beautifully written, and well-edited. This is truly "A Story of Jewish Experience in Mississippi." I grew up in Mobile, Alabama, and the book really resonated with me and my experience of growing up Jewish in the South in the 1950s and '60s. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the story of Jews in the southern U.S.

This fascinating book deserves a wide leadership since it vividly illustrates the live of jews in the south of the USA, especially during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The book is eminently readable and very well researched.I particularly like the personal perspective of the author and his family to illustrate a wider context of the trials and tribulations of jews in the south and their precarious position during the civil right movement. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American history, the civil rights movement, the position of jews in the south and the perils of racism that are still with us.

Total Church is one of the best books I've read in a long time and may be THE best books I've read on church. As the subtitle suggests, the authors argue that church is to be radically reshaped around gospel and community. They argue for three things:"Christian practice must be (1) gospel-centered in the sense of being word-centered, (2) gospel-centered in the sense of being mission-centered, and (3) community-centered." (p. 16)The authors immediately nail their colors to the mast, distinguishing their perspective from both conservative evangelicals and the emerging church. With emerging church, they agree that conservatives are often bad at community. But with conservatives, they agree that the emerging church is sometimes soft on truth. This book proposes an alternative to both, churches that are both gospel-centered (with both a word-centered focus and a missional focus) and community-centered."Rigorously applying these principles has the potential to lead to some fundamental and thoroughgoing changes in the way we do church," warn the authors (p. 18). This is no entrenched defense of traditional church structures or practices. I found the book stimulating, eye-opening, paradigm-shifting, and sometimes personally-threatening.Total Church is divided into two parts.I. Part one is on "Gospel and Community in Principle" and argues for each in turn. Chapter one, "Why Gospel?" discusses both word and mission. "Christianity must be word-centered," the authors argue, because "God rules through his gospel word" (p. 24) and "mission-centered because God extends his rule through his gospel word" (p. 28). These assertions are fleshed out with close, but non-technical, attention to the text of Scripture, and real-life stories that show how the principles work out in practice. In fact, two of the strengths of this book are the pervasive use of Scripture and the multiple stories and examples of application. Chapter 2, "Why Community?" argues that "The Christian community is central to Christian Identity" (p. 39) and "Christian mission" (p. 47).II. Part Two of the book focuses on "Gospel and Community in Practice," by applying the principles of part one (being word-centered, mission-centered, and community-centered) to the following areas:*Evangelism (chapter 3)*Social Involvement (4)*Church Planting (5)*World Mission (6)*Discipleship and Training (7)*Pastoral Care (8)*Spirituality (9)*Theology (10)*Apologetics (11)*Children and Young People (12)*Success (13)There are too many helpful insights from these chapters to share in a brief review. But here are some examples from the chapter on evangelism. The authors argue that there are "three strands of evangelism" (1) building relationships, (2) introducing people to community, and (3) sharing the gospel (p. 60-61). Their approach is holistic, relational, and driven by genuine concern for both the gospel and people. You won't find gimmicks or techniques here. In their words, "most gospel ministry involves ordinary people doing ordinary things with gospel intentionality" (p. 63).Evangelism is to be a community project, which means that "our different gifts and personalities can complement one another. Some people are good at building relationships with new people. Some are socialites - the ones who will organize a trip or an activity. Some people are great at hospitality. Some are good at initiating gospel conversations. Some are good at confronting heart issues" (p. 62). A team approach combines the various gifts, which helps counter the guilt and despondency so many people feel when thinking about evangelism. "By making evangelism a community project, [we] take seriously the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit . . . Everyone has a part to play - the new Christian, the introvert, the extrovert, the eloquent, the stuttering, the intelligent, the awkward. I may be the one who has begun to build a relationship with my neighbor, but in introducing him to community, it is someone else who shares the gospel with him. That is not only legitimate - it is positively thrilling!" (p. 62).As you can see, this approach focuses on all three priorities: the word, mission, and community. This is how the authors approach each of the eleven topics listed above.I can hardly recommend this book highly enough. I will be sharing it with my staff, elders, and other church leaders (I'm a pastor). I'll also be talking about this book with friends, exploring how to apply it in our congregational life, and referencing it often. If you want a fresh approach to church and mission that doesn't lose sight of the gospel and isn't just a plug-n-play program, get this book. You'll be glad you did.

Challenging, insightful, and biblically sound! The authors are transparent, vulnerable and honest about their experiences. This book is good soul food and I highly recommend it to all who long to better understand (and move toward experiencing) what the church is really all about.On a different note, I would like to point out a recurring error that distracted me until I figured out what was going on. (I have the Kindle edition of the book so it may not be relevant to those who have the print edition.) The recurring error is that the word "first" has been consistently replaced by the word "Initial". I would like to see this error corrected.

Good book that covers some basics. But the “total” church downplays excellence? The authors also overlook all of the other areas where churches fail (finances, volunteers, infidelity, just crappy preaching). It is a myopic look at ministry to others in ministry that once again doesn’t see the bigger picture of why the church in the West is dying.

My wife and I just finished this great book. It was recommended to me by a church planter. I am so encouraged with the ideas and fresh approaches to ministry. It is a book that keeps Christ at the center of all we do. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone that is seeking a more authentic Christianity where living life in gospel community is so attractive to the unsaved observer that they truly will long to have what we have. Behind the method is the man. Any methods we choose to follow are secondary to Christ Himself. I enjoyed this book completely. It wasn't "earth shattering" for me, but it was a great reminder that the New Testament Church was lived out in community. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is lived out in community. We can not do it on our own. I think that the concept was summed up in the chapter on Church Planting when the authors remind us that "lone rangers" are not what church planting is all about, it's about the community of Christ working together.There are three principles that are pointed out throughout the book. They are; 1. Gospel-centered through God's word. 2. Gospel-centered through mission (action) 3. community-centered. The Gospel is who we are and is displayed in how we live. The authors state that "True theology leads to love, mission and doxology." Again this is nothing earth shattering, but I think we have a tendency to loose sight of the goal because of "programs" that we think and feel will deliver the Gospel.We have to be reminded that no one comes to Christ through a "program", they come to Christ through the Gospel message. So, how is that message delivered.Total Church delivers it's message in two sections. Part One deals with the concept of Gospel and Community. Part Two deals with the practice of Gospel and Community.Even the authors say that the message is simple, but frankly we Christians take what is simple and make it complex. For the early Jewish Community the ten commandments turned into 683 rules to live by. For us today the Gospel Message has turned into 100's of programs.Don't let programs push out living in community and living out the Gospel. In other words, don't loose sight of the forest because of all the trees.Enjoy this easy to read but profound thesis.

I am an adult and purchased this book for myself, it has beautiful illustrations and presents a wonderful way of looking at four of the sabbats. I read one of the stories to a non pagan friend of mine, who seemed to really enjoy it. I have lots of friends with children, so that was the excuse I presented myself with when I decided to purchase the book. The book seems to be well made and would make a lovely gift to either yourself or others. The tales are written in a rhyming format and describe the underlying message of each sabbat, through the eyes and ears of Rupert the rabbit.

I was hoping this book would be a good, helpful explication / story of the different days. It does have good information in it, but that good information is sparse and hidden within redundant, overcomplicated text. This book was hard for me (as an adult) to pay attention through, I could never imagine a kid enjoying these books, let alone even being able to just sit through them. The author could have removed half of the words from the book and had better product.I really liked the idea of this book, and using a bunny to discover the days seemed like it would lead to a good storyline. Instead it was forced and overly complex. I purchased the hard-cover version of this and the other Rupert Tale as pre-shopping for a holiday gift, and when I tried returning it today (after the holiday) I couldn't even return it. Don't waste your money, I wish I didn't.

I love this book! The artwork is child friendly, the stories are engaging and Rupert is adorable! When the Goddess and God do make an apearence, they do not look like they came from Fantasy Art, but are still attractive and modest in dress and apperance. That has been my problem with most childrens literature, they do not need to use fantasy art to represent the Divine Couple. Although the Beltane story was a bit long for my 5 year old daughter, the content is age appropriate. Highly recommend this for any pagan family. I just ordered the second book and hope to include these stories into my family coven soon. Blessed Be.

This book was recommended as a book for my nephews who at the time were three and six. My older nephew fell in love with Rupert and could not wait to come home and read the stories. The stories are short and make it rather easy to discuss the wheel of the year with your child.

This book fills a need for Pagan parents. It is good for early elementary age, perhaps grade 2-5. My younger kids had trouble following the stories a bit and would have liked more pictures. Still, it is a good intro to the Wheel of the Year for kids.

I myself do not have children, but I have bought them for other children and myself. They are an easy read and fun to read. They Rhyme and make it easy to understand the holidays and the true meaning behind them. It is not about the marketing of the holiday it is the meaning behind it, why and how we celebrate! I think this author is amazing and so dedicated to make sure our path gets taught and passed on to future generations.......I will have the whole series and I will continue to buy the books and any and all the future ones to come....... ;-) Thank you Kyrja and Tonia for bring Rupert to life.

I loved the book and the pages, but my son couldn't stay still enough to hear the story because it was just too long worded. My son has ADHD and of course never can stay still. If it had less words and went quicker in pace, it would have been perfect.

This book was purchased to use as a teaching tool. There isn't much material available for the purpose of teaching young children about pagan beliefs and holidays. This book fulfilled that purpose in an adorable way. The holidays of Beltane, Litha, Lammas, and Mabon are described by a friendly fairy and observed through a bunny's eyes in a way that grabs the attention of young children. I'm delighted be how much the children enjoyed the stories.

Player Piano actually made me a tad nervous in the early-going. It seemed to be paced a bit slower than what I'm used to with Vonnegut. It plodded a little at the start, but once it got going, wow.Also, it was peculiar to look at when this story was written, how long ago, and how automation was such a concern. That Kurt had such a clear sense of where we were going and where it could end. And oddly enough, it feels like, in some ways his future's come true, and in more ways, it's ~still~ coming true as we all sort of edge closer to being unnecessary.I wonder if, in our own futures, we won't be buying our Ghost Shirts on Amazon with free Prime shipping.

Vonnegut's first novel is a great one - imaginative, engaging, and thought-provoking. The story is set in the United States, post-World War III, and automation from machines has put the majority of Americans out of work. There are two types of people - those with a high IQ, who are eligible to become managers and engineers, and those with a low IQ, who are eligible for the Army or a Reconstruction and Reclamation program. Each group lives and works in separate areas, and there is very little overlap between the two classes of people.The main character, Doctor Paul Proteus, is a manager at a factory that gradually becomes aware of the unfair situation for the people on the other side of the river. We follow him through his awakening, and it is interesting to see all of the terrible things he must go through that truly test his mettle and integrity.Overall, I found this to be a great book, and was fairly surprised at how strong it was since it was Vonnegut's first novel. I would recommend this to anyone familiar with his works.

This book has not aged well. Even when it was fresh it would still have been as derivative as it is today. Unless you're doing a course on Vonnegut I would advise giving this a miss and simply re-read 1984, The Aerodrome or Brave New World.Perhaps I came to this at the wrong time, having just been reading Christopher Hitchens who does an excellent job of dissecting this kind of narrative (in a positive way). Once you've read Hitchens' analysis of the pattern addressed here, the patterns become all too obvious, and Vonnegut offers little beyond the basic pattern.It certainly reveals the prejudices of its author, but today it is most interesting for having spawned many successors, ignorant or intentional, who address much the same issue of automation depriving workers of a purpose. Nothing here would surprise Thomas Hardy though, just substitute farm workers for factory workers, and industrialisation for automation and you're done. The only novelty here is the downbeat failure/meaninglessness of the revolution. You can force a positive spin on this if you work at it, but it takes an effort.For a more modern work, Alan Moore's first Halo Jones book says as much in a lot fewer words.For the same kind of mid-life crisis character as the protagonist, there are hundreds of books that deliver something more realistic, believable and meaningful. If this had been Vonnegut's only work, he'd be forgotten by now.

This one plods. You wind up not caring about any of the characters or their inane conversations, and with the occasional flashes of the visiting Shah just a comic distraction from the grey environment. Yeah, we get the tedious points about hierarchy, corporate grind, computer control, etc. Yeah, we understand that this is an early Vonnegut production. Yeah, there are some passages of superior writing in descriptions of physical surrounding and faces. But Slaughterhouse Five it ain't. Nowhere near it. And reading it on Kindle, I couldn't wait for it to end.

His dystopian post - war USA where " machines" ( we could now say computers in general or Artificial Intelligence in particular ) have abolished most jobs may well become horribly true and the rage of the dispossessed and marginalised, who are offered only pointless "make - work" public works jobs or an equally unneeded career in the huge US Army ( which just endlessly trains , and with replica wooden guns ) is reflected in today's fury and anger at the same sort of smug and self satisfied supposedly meritocratic engineering ( we could say software or IT in general ) and managerial elite that he satirised with their team songs, bonding weekends ans sham friendships. His tiny affluent elite lived apparently ideal lives in exclusive 1950s suburbs, ours dress in skinny jeans, have tattoos and beards , live in gentrified inner city districts that the locals have long since been priced out of and ride kids scooters but the message is the same : if we let these people rule our world, we become slaves.

I read this book written in 1952 in the 1960s and thought it was OK.However, I reread it last month because of how relevant the theme is to today's world. The theme of the book rates 5 stars. The plot and writing rate 3 stars. Why is the theme from 70 years ago so "today?" Because it deals with what happens when almost all of the people in the US (world) no longer make anything because machines (robots) make everything. This leads to a small group(robotics engineers and software engineers) as the only people with jobs. Further, in the name of efficiency there is centralized planning so so each non-working person receives the identical housing and appliances. This leads to segregated neighborhoods for the managers, the factories and the others who actually have make work jobs for very low pay. The book describes how soul crushing life is for the others and a revolt lead by the elite.

Really? The advice is frequently facile; e.g. apparently 'textures are all around us in nature' - 'yes, thank you detective'. Please think carefully before buying this book. If you're looking for something that shows a real grasp of the subtleties of working with planes of skin and their textures, you'll get about as much good advice from a 3-4 page article on the subject in any reputable photo magazine. Given the book's price point it's dreadful value for money

There are plenty of books available that provide diagrams of where to place lighting, what type of modifers to use, etc. This book is less about the technical side of photography and more about the practical side in how to use light to achieve the desired result. I walked away from this book with a better understanding of how to get the results I want.I'm not sure this is the best book for beginners. The subject material is the artistic nude primarily in low-key black and white. Some practical portrait photography experience is probably helpful to fully appreciate what the author is attempting to convey with his many examples.This book shows each image with a brief explanation of the camera setting used along with something about the image to help the reader understand why the image is included in this book.While there are many examples in this book taken in the studio, by far the emphasis is on location photography with an emphasis is on natural lighting. While some images were made with the help of additional lighting, the intent is to show how really wonderful photography can be achieved with using available light. Most plates include information on the F-stop and shutter speed used to take the image.Anyone wishing to take their portrait photography to the next level will likely benefit from this book. A rare find and one I know I'll refer back to often.

He guides you through various journeys - learning what the camera sees and why; how to become comfortable with your equipment; what to be aware of as you begin to shoot (especially important for those learning to shoot nudes, which can be stressful or effortless, depending on your experience and attitude); and how to develop and work with original images in various platforms to get the best possible result.He is respectful of the reader, regardless of experience. And most importantly, he is respectful of the models he works with. They, too, are professionals, and are too often under-appreciated for the time, energy and experience they contribute to this work.In short, everything you would want to know, as you undertake this ancient - yet each time fresh, challenging, and new - art form.If you get any book in this genre, let Bill show you how to do it.

I bought the book because I have been a landscape photographer for many years but am interested in doing some studio and, possibly, outdoor nudes. Based on it's title and subtitle, I had some hope that this would give me specifics on lighting issues, posing/cropping and issues of correctly representing the human skin tones in a film photograph. Unfortunately, this did not help a lot on most of the above.Pros: It has quite a few ideas on posing the model (by example pictures) and, if you are a digital photographer, how to correct skin tones in Photoshop. How good this info was is hard for me, a film shooter, to tell.Cons: It is particularly unhelpful in lighting issues in that it has no diagrams of lighting (either studio or outdoors). Other books, I consider more helpful, have diagrams of specific lighting & placement used along with the example photographs. While this book hinted at some of this lighting info. for the studio, I still had to infer a lot about how many lights were used and their specific placement. On outdoor lighting, quotes like "be mindful of the sun" really did not help me at all. He did talk about using strobe to "fill" outdoor scenes but, again, no diagrams as to where to hold it to get a specific effect shown in the example photgraph.It did not talk at all about how to work with skin tones in black & white film shooting despite the fact that he indicates film is included in the book's perview and he used film in several of the shots in the book. (I had to find info on what filters to use to help with this in other books.) I guess the author assumes you can always "fix it in Photoshop" although, as best I can tell, he does not cover what to do with a scanned negative from b&w film; only digital color capture. Again, not being familiar with Photoshop, the process may be the same.Finally, and this may be nit picking but... Several times he comments on the importance of making sure you don't cut off body parts in awkward locations with your posing/cropping; yet he shows no examples comparing "right" and "wrong" places to crop and on several of his illistrations of supposedly good photographs he comments that the model was not correctly cropped. I guess I question why use badly cropped images as examples of "good" photographs. His just saying "I usually try not to crop this badly" [my paraphrasing] isn't very professional or helpful.Summary: The book states that the author gives workshops and perhaps these issues are properly covered in a live presentation, but this book is lacking. I get the impression that he took a set of photographs he liked and put "workshop notes" around them to create this; rather than analyzing how to write a text which would explain the subject without his being there to show you.This book may help some (especially digital photographers) but if you are in need of specifics on lighting, skin tone representation in film or posing/cropping, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

More a skin book than light and shadow, more for the voyeur than the photographer trying to improve his technique

Bill Lemon's books is worth every penny for the photographs alone. However, it is an invaluable guide for developing the skills of glamour photography. Mr. Lemon is a master of the art and the technique.

About the Author

Rachel Aspden became literary editor of the New Statesman in 2006, at the age of 26. She now reports for The Guardian and writes freelance for the New Statesman, Observer, Prospect, and Think magazine (Qatar). She lived in Cairo from 2003 to 2004 and worked as an editor and reporter for the English-language Cairo Times. In 2010 she was awarded a yearlong traveling fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to research activists working to fight extremism within Islam. She is currently based in London.

Essential reading for anyone who wants to get a sense of what the 2011 Egyptian upheaval and its aftermath looked like on the ground as events unfolded from day to day. The savagery of Egypt's police and security services are starkly highlighted. Of particular interest are Aspden's portraits young Egyptians who participated in the various factions contending for ascendancy, full of idealistic aspirations for ending a corrupt and oppressive system and for establishing a just and democratic order -- but with radically different views about what this would entail. Aspden has done a fine job of locating individuals representing a wide range of perspectives from atheist/secularist to zealous Islamist and from pro-democracy to hard line authoritarian. We who remember Egyptian society as it was many decades ago encounter a chilling assessment in Aspden's descriptions of the rise of a violently misogynist male culture. This seems to be linked to a widespread consumption of Western pornography that leads to a vicious practice of aggressive sexual harassment, which makes it highly dangerous for women to venture into public spaces -- as Aspden herself discovers. The brutal repression of dissent and the painful disillusionment and alienation of Egyptians who back in 2011 hoped for a better society with a decent government will have deleterious consequences over the coming decades, including a serious brain drain as highly talented Egyptians despair of their futures and migrate to Western democracies -- the same pattern that has drained Iran of its best and brightest since its revolution led only to a different type of despotism.

In 2003, Rachel Aspen, 23, had just landed in Cairo, where she hoped to launch her career as journalist. She lived in Cairo from 2003-2004 and then moved to other venues. At 26, she was literary editor of the New Statesman and she has continued to work as a freelancer, reporting in such prestigious journals as the New Statesman, Observer, Prospect and the Qatar Foundation’s English-language journal Think. All this time, from 2003 till now, she has dipped in and out of Cairo and Egypt, checking the temperature of its politics and thinking. In 2010 she was awarded a yearlong fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to research activists working to fight extremism within Islam. (This is a direct quotation from the cover notes.) This book is one of the fruits of that research.What she found in Egypt in 2003 was a country of young people governed by old men who were desperately out of touch with them. 2/3s of the 70 million population were under the age of thirty. What would happen when the old men died or were shoved aside.? What did these young people aspire to and how prepared were they to take on the trappings of leadership? She focuses on a handful of young adults, five men and four women, and records their aspirations in the years preceding 2011, when it seemed impossible to imagine any change in government; to the unexpected overthrow of president Hosni Mubarak in the spring of 2011; and to the twists and turns of the following years. BY the end of the book, which follows events through 2016, all of these young people are dispirited. Many are leaving their country. The goal of those who stay behind is to stay below the radar of a repressive, military-dominated government. As to hopes for enlightenment of the condition of women in this increasingly reactionary society, all hopes are gone.This book is a fine example of what responsible, well-researched journalism can bring to us, helping us better to understand and come to grips with issues that aren’t simple and because of the distance between our societies, aren’t immediately easy for us to grasp. Aspden writes well. But much more important than that, because she seriously tries to understand different viewpoints and lifestyles within the country she is examining, she can help us to understand how, in a society where hope and other options for self-identification and self-worth have vanished, even very conservative religious views can provide the vehicle for political reform. In Egypt at least, it is gratuitous violence we should be fighting, not religious conservatism, because all conservative groups are not the same.

First, the book is less about the Middle East in general than about Egypt in particular. For me, that was a plus as I'd visited Egypt and loved it. I admire the author's sheer bravery. I went as a cowardly western tourist, staying in top hotels and being escorted with tourist agents and police. The hotel sent an agent to get me through the airport. Crossing the street in Cairo was an adventure. Our guides were upper class Egyptians from wealthy families.In contrast, Rachel just booked a ticket and rented a cheap apartment in the heart of Cairo. She knew Arabic so she met people directly - mostly twenty-somethings - and spent time with them, beyond interviewing. She got to know them as friends so they were more than story.The result is a fascinating book that opens up Egypt - and to some extent, the rest of the region - like no factual history textbook. We see how individuals deal with the political and cultural regimes, especially a young woman who escaped her family to establish her own apartment and earn a good living as a single woman, and a physician who realized he'd become an atheist but didn't dare express his views aloud.Aspden writes engagingly, and each chapter reads like a New York Times Magazine article: filled with news filtered through human interest stories. At times the stories can be painful and there's no optimism for the future of Egypt and the Middle East. Each new president brings hope that's ultimately not fulfilled.The book seems especially timely for the US, as we're experiencing a presidency that brings us closer to dictatorship than we had believed possible, with many people denying that it's happening right before our eyes. In the first part of the book, Aspden notes that Suzanne Mubarak had tried to bring reforms and had worked with the arts. Yet she was feared as "elitist" by many of the people, who mistrusted her. "Secularism was associated with repression" in the minds of many.In spring of 2017, in the US, the parallels seem uncanny as well as terrifying.

There is a lot of controversy over this book in AA as it is not conference approved. This book came about from the notes of a member of the Oxford group which was basically a prayer group that Dr. bob attended with Henrietta Siberling for 2 years before he got sober. Bob and Ann Smith attended this group for 2 years never admitting his alcoholism even though that and his financial troubles were well known to the group. One day he admitted to the group he could not control his drinking and they prayed over him, 2 weeks later Bill Wilson rolled into town.There is a lot of wisdom in this book and as AA 12 steps was built on the 4 steps of the Oxford group, I feel it cannot hurt to read this. The Oxford 4 steps were 1. Abandon yourself to God. 2. Make a written moral inventory. 3. Make restitution for harms done. And 4. Work with others. Sound familiar, this is all documented by Gail who started the archives of AA and her lectures on history of AA can be found on AA Podcasts.Another book I highly recommend is the little red book written 10 years after the big book and really gets into the 12 steps in more detail than the 12 and 12.Good luck and I wish you all the best as you trudge the road of sobriety.

This little black book is really something else. I've been going to alanon meetings for about 2 weeks now and my sponsor wants to wait a month before starting my steps. The thing you quickly learn in alanon is that although you may not have a drinking problem, we are still sick with the disease of alcoholism. My loved one is currently in rehab and I just knew I had to do something for myself. I'm learning how to find inner piece and this book (along with others) has been amazing. My only qualm is that it does reference God a lot and that's not really my thing, but I can easily get past that and look at the true message.

I have used this book for 8 years and will eventually have to get a new one for myself. I give them to other folks in the program as it has been my mainstay, especially when I was unable to attend meetings as often as I wanted. I like that it gives a daily meditation, which I live and breath for. It sets me on the right track for my day, and teaches me to internalize the messages in recovery. Used properly, it can be a worthy tool for maintaining one's sobriety. Even though the readings remain the same I get something new every year from the daily inspirations, and this book has spoken to my needs of the moment more times than I can count. It is truly a God-given hand to be held in the face of life on life's terms.

This time honored book is a reliable source of support for those in recovery. The daily messages serve to help construct a positive thought pattern as we go throughout the day. Richmond Walker wrote one amazing book back in the early 1950s and I have to say that next to the big book and the 12 and 12, this book has been instrumental in my 22 years of sobriety. This book has been by my side the whole time. I cannot recommend it enough. I think it blows the doors off of Daily Reflections which I think was done in a very half measures way. This book is way beyond that one.

This book doesn't get the credit it deserves. If every AA member read and lived by this book, there'd be a lot more happy and sober AA members. It helps teach people to truly live the steps, incorporate them in their lives, learn the traditions, and act responsibly and respectfully within (and outside of) AA. Many of the meditations are taken from quotes in the Big Book. It's a solution based daily prayer and meditation book. Invaluable, in my opinion. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

This book was described to me as "A roadmap for a Spiritual Awakening.If you haven't discovered your own Spiritual Awakening, as promised in Step 12, you need to ask yourself why you haven't. Two notes from my observations; there are no people more prone to think that they are God than alcoholics and; People who haven't had a spiritual awakening are missing out and tend to hang out with folks who are equally skeptical, confirming their own doubts and inabilities.I give this book to all of my sponsees and sooner or later, the scales are lifted from their eyes!!! And not one of them regrets it!!!

As one of the many books for daily meditation available in the recovery community this is possibly my favorite. Having a thought, meditation, and prayer for each day is very helpful. Though not conference approved the book holds true to the principles and traditions of 12-step recovery, though its usefulness particularly for the meditations and prayers would apply to anyone. This pocket edition is easy to carry around or store conveniently in your preferred meditation spot. Only draw back with the pocket size is that sometimes the text is a bit on the small side, but not unreadable. Makes a great gift for people new to recovery, sponsors, or other friends in the program.
