I would give it 10 stars if I could. Every person who contemplates the possible use of a nuclear bomb should read this diary first. I spent 2 1/2 years in Japan during the Korean War and met a young woman who was in Nagasaki when it was bombed. One side of her face was normal, the other side covered with Keloid scars. She saw the flash of light when the bomb ignited, then turned her face away. I do believe that it took something as dramatic as the bomb to quickly end the war, but the A-bomb does something that regular high explosives don't do and that is to destroy everything and everyone including hospitals and doctors so hundreds of thousands of people are left horribly burned and injured with no possible help.

This was a personal diary, never intended for publication until the late Dr Hachiya was persuaded of its significance. As we draw further away in time from the use of the atom bomb at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it becomes an increasingly important documentation of the effects on the innocent people involved. This moment shouldn't be allowed to fade away, for fear that history would repeat itself. At times, this was difficult even for me, a retired nurse, to read. I briefly allowed myself to visualize what I was reading, then had to step away from those images as my mind and my heart couldn't fathom the desperation of the worst situations. I was amazed at the later reactions of the Japanese people towards their military and Americans. I wouldn't advise this book as reading material for anyone younger than high school age.

As a medical professional I was very captivated by what was described and what was done to care for the victims. I was of course saddened by the tragedy of the bombing and what the world viewpoints were then. To see where our care for radiation sickness patients stemmed from because of this senseless act was very interesting.To those who do read, my advice would be to skip the first forward and read from the second forward (the original) onward. The first foreword nearly put me off from reading what was an excellent book.

Dr. Hachiya was obviously a noble person. The same can be said for the staff of his hospital as they dealt with a decent approximation of the worst possible circumstances humans can face. Somehow they kept going amidst everything and managed to help those who were not too far beyond the simple measures available to them in their devastated hospital. His descriptions in his diary have the clinical detachment expected of most doctors - i work with many. But he also records his non-clinical thoughts. The presence of both sides of his personality give a vivid picture. The forward to the book makes note of the fact that Dr. Hachiya is recording observations of radiation sickness without knowing what it is. He tries to hypothesize what could be causing the symptoms they find, and at one point, for example, he suggests an atmospheric pressure etiology, due to other conditions he had seen elsewhere. The gradual discovery of the actual condition, along with observations by other doctors he mentions, is interesting.He kept his humanity and his professionalism when it would be easy to not. His patients were the better for it. And the reader is the better for his allowing his diary to be translated and printed.

This was a physician's diary of the day of and about a month following the 1st atom bombing of Hiroshima. Well-written.Things we know as history now were revealed as the days went by. What was that flash? How did I become completely naked? My house collapsed. Why are people who were improving now becoming very sick and dying? Remember, no-one knew about radiation sickness yet.Rumors going around the hospital about Japan bombing the US with an atom bomb. He talks about the Japanese surrender and everyone's fear that they would become slaves of the victors, and their relief when the Americans came in and were kind to them.He didn't write this diary to publish it, it was for his own personal journaling of this terrible time in his and his countrymen's lives. Which, to me, makes it even more significant. You won't be able to put this one down. I found myself saying, just let me read one more day, often making me late for work! Highly recommended!

This book gave me chills of horror as well as goose bumps of empathy and love for the victims of this weapon of such unimaginable and never-before-witnessed destructive power. Dr. Hachiya's diary reads like both a medical mystery and a poignant human drama. I was sad when the last page came and, like the author on the 49th day after the pika, I offered a prayer for Michino Hachiya, his wife, his hospital staff, neighbors and for all the bodies and souls whose flames are extinguished in the cold cruel winds of war.

About the Author

Trena L. Wilkerson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor with a focus in mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She currently works with both preservice and inservice mathematics teachers across grades PK-12. She was a secondary school mathematics teacher for 18 years and has worked in higher education for the past 17 years.She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi College in 1976 with a major in mathematics. OMG this book helped me pass the test on the second try.I am a 7th grade math teacher, who wanted to add to her resume and decided to take the 4-8 Math TEXES exam. I thought how hard can it be? I teach math everyday and I have gone to school for the elementary portion. I decided to take the test in the summer. I stupidily thought that I could just take the exam with little to no prep and pass. (Oh yeah, I also planned this a week after my honeymoon). Well I was rocked when I took the test and found out how much material was over Algebra, Calculus and statistics. These were not concepts I had to teach but I had to know the fundementals to teach my grade level. I never took calculus in high school so it was like I was seeing a different language. Well needless to say when I got the results I wasn't suprised. I missed passing by 8 questions. I was crushed, I considered leaving the profession. Just kidding, I signed up for another exam in December, 6 months should be enough time to get me ready for round 2.So I looked online and found this book, it had great reviews and seemed to help several others that were in a similar boat to me. I read a little bit at a time, and took the week before to really cram and re-learn as much as I could on the subjects I was rusty in. I went into the testing center confident that I would kick this tests butt. I was so happy when I actually knew what some of the upper-grade level information was.Well I passed the test by over 10 questions. I knew I would have not been able to do as well if I had no prepared for the exam. This book and CD really helped me fill the gaps that I had.This book is a great resource and will defiantly help you increase your score or pass the exam if you are a repeat tester like me.

This is an excellent study guide for the Texas Middle SchoolMath Exam. The guide summarizes each of the competencies with the needed formulas in a quick an concise manner. It provides a perfect refresher. The sample tests are actually more comprehensive than the TExES exam. I was very pleased. Oh, I passed the state exam first time with a weighted score of 92%. The guide was instrumental in my success as I had been out of university for over 20 years. Teaching is a second career for me.

I passed the test, but then again I've taught math for ten years. This more helped me get my mind right for TExES goodies on being a standardized Texas test taker.

So far so good. I like how I can take the test and know what areas I need to focus on. Will update when I test, wish me luck.

I did so so on the test. I studied/crammed for 3 months prior to the text, but there was topics that were on the test and other practice tests that this book didn't cover or mention. Other than that, it was very helpful and got me on track to pass.

My wife used this to prepare for her certification test. She thought it was useful for that purpose.

I, along with several of my co-workers, found several errors in this book. The book helped me remember many formulas that I had forgotten and other basic information. At times, however, the explanations were incomplete, confusing, or just plain wrong. On the tests, I found errors as well. Several of the answers were wrong on the answer key. So, if you need a basic review, I'd say it's okay for that, but don't let this be your only study tool.

Full disclosure - the author is a very dear childhood friend. Being a supporter of friends and all things women entrepreneur, I bought the book and read it to be supportive. And I LOVED it. No, really...I absolutely loved it. If I didn't love it, I would never take the time to write a review. I sit here now with a feeling of contentment having just finished this sweet, beautiful story and a little sad that it's over. Tammy's writing is extraordinary. She creates a vivid and clear picture of each character and scene. Example: "The warden, always a lover of the practical, shushed him. 'Ladies come in all shapes and sizes and deserve our respect, Ken.' When he said that, it made it somehow all right for me to sit with my legs uncrossed. It made it OK that I didn't carry a purse. It made it ok that makeup felt like a colorful lie on my face." And another favorite, highly relatable quote, "I left her room wondering how many people I would hurt because I cared what others thought." There are just too many examples of superb use of language to list here.I often fight books and plots, trying to figure out the ending. This one was in no way predictable, gratuitous, or forced. She builds scenarios and relationships that are believable but often surprising. If you are in the mood to curl up with a book that will leave you feeling like you just met a bunch of new friends, this is the one. Not only is it a great read but it would make a terrific book club selection.

A page turner that moved from heartwarming to heartbreaking and back again. Stoner tells an important story in an engaging and accessible way. The early time in the prison is eye-opening. The main character feels like the best friend you could always count on to tell you if those jeans really *did* make you look fat. I found myself rooting for her. The whole family is full of people so real I could imagine them at my thanksgiving table.. This is the first book in a long while where I felt I didnâ€™t want it to end... fingers crossed for a sequel sequel.

Awesome vacation read! â€œ.... and I realized that sometimes itâ€™s the assumptions of something that can create it. You hear these awful things about yourself and someday youâ€™ll more than likely become some of these things, if for no other reason than to prove you did something rightâ€. Beautiful passage. But reminds me of how powerful words can be... the same can be true of speaking love and positivity. Congratulations Tammy Stoner on a beautiful piece of work.

It is 1923 Texas, and Dara realizes she has fallen in love with her best friend. The problem is that her best friend is a woman, and this is 1923, and it's Texas. Being publicly lesbian will lead to a very difficult life. They are treated as criminals and looked down upon. She doesn't want a life like that.So she takes a job at a prison for men, working in the kitchen. Since she likes women, Dara feels like this would be a safe place for her to basically hide out. She is terrified of being found out. Interestingly, her friend keeps writing her letters, and how she would go public with Dara and they could be happy. Dara eventually has the letters sent back.When Dara has been at the prison for ten years, the Warden suddenly proposes. She didn't see it coming, but she goes on to have a decent life with him. He is a good man and treats her well. Dara now has two stepdaughters.It was interesting how she always seemed to treat the one stepdaughter better than the other, maybe because she felt like she could understand the one stepdaughter better and relate to her more. I felt bad for the one daughter, Debbie, Dara always seems to be short with her.I liked this novel, it was something a little different. Reading how terrified Dara was when she realized she was a lesbian, and she honestly feared for her life. It's different from these days. How different would her life have been if she had been public with her friend, but she might not have lived long it was so dangerous.

I just finished this brilliant book and am now buying it as holiday gifts for several friends whom I know will enjoy it. It's one of those stories you fully immerse yourself in, giggle out loud while reading and don't want to end. Dara's world is 1920s Texas and, while it is interesting to journey back to a time and place so different in many ways, Stoner takes us through Dara's world, her mind and heart, in a way that is always intimate and honest. It's an unassumingly romantic read that, like its main character, doesn't fuss too much and keeps you laughing, crying or moving forward at just the right time. This is the most original novel I've read in a while. I loved it.

Tammy Lynn Stoner is a genius with serious talent. I really loved this book. The world building is tremendous. It was so easy to start reading and slip into that world. The book masterfully displays balance between what is so painful about being a social outcast, especially historically, and the hopefulness of Dara, the main character. Sugar Land documents the history and the pain of the past, and of course the pain of the present for so many people still, without bumming us out for all time. And I really felt like I knew the characters. So so good. This book will become part of the queer cannon.

Beautifully written. Sugar Land is the story of a Texas woman who attempts to sequester herself away from the world by going to work in a prison for men. Itâ€™s a heartbreaking start to a rich life of love and joy. There are so many great characters in this novel, and the setting is rich with historical detail and gritty Southern charm.

I really enjoyed this book! I was able to read it over Thanksgiving break and it was a nice change of pace from my relatives. I felt that the book was descriptive and painted an accurate picture of Texas. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to terms with their sexuality or anyone that just wants to enjoy a lovely story about coming-of-age!

There are only two authors in this genre who write at this very high artistic and articulate level. Josh Lanyon and Michael Nava.Anything by either is well worth your time and interest. Great characters,complex plots, insightful narrative,some really good writing, entertaining and delightful.

Top notch Lanyon series. Enjoyed it.

This book could matins the five novellas that make up the Dangerous Ground series starring Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister. Will and Taylor are federal agents, partners, working for the Diplomatic Security Bureau, the law enforcement branch of the State Department. We start with them as work partners who grudgingly (on Willâ€™s part) start a relationship. In the subsequent books we watch the relationship experience growing pains as we also watch our heroâ€™s solve various mysteries.Due to the format of the novellas we donâ€™t get a lot of character development in each book but over the course of the five books we get a better sense of each character. The mysteries are vague and again, due to time constraints not as compelling as this authorâ€™s other work. Book five leaves a big mystery hanging with no sign there is a book six coming any time soon.Iâ€™m not sure how I feel about these characters. Book four really ratchets up the emotional level and I felt real pain and sorrow for Taylor. But overall thereâ€™s not the same connection with these characters that Iâ€™ve felt with other characters this author has created.

I really enjoyed this series....at least, I enjoyed the beginning of it. The last book was kind of a throw but it gets explained later in the book. I wish Mr Lanyon would continue the series, it doesn't feel complete to me, but I'm one who hates it when books/series finally end. Or, if it is really the end, he should have left off the last book because everything was sort of resolved.Yeah... Any case, I'd recommend this book to pretty much anyone who enjoys a detective series.

My 9 year old daughter couldn't put it down and revisits it regularly. Highly recommend. She actually lost the book and saved up to buy herself another. She loves to read it to me while we are on trips and I get to choose what direction the story goes. Lots of fun!

I generally like the You Choose series of books and the children enjoy them also. The Salem Witch book, however, is not for younger children. In one chapter the a child has to choose to turn in his mother as a witch. The school librarian read this book also and said it was not appropriate for younger (4th grade and below) children.

Readers never get a 'happy ending' and although I know it was rare for that to occur, from what know, some were cleared or escaped. I feel the author didn't do as much research as they should have although what they're included was good.

These are really fun to read and educational.

All those blogs must have been written by people that stayed on resorts and never interacted with the locals. This book was priceless to me on my trip to Bali. I used it every day, sometimes so much that I just carried it in my hand instead of putting it in my purse. The very front of the book has some important phrases that you will use a lot, which is great, but even better was that the front also has room to notate other phrases that you use often that you can write in, such as "more strong/relax" for massages, "I'm just looking" for everyone that wants to sell you something every single minute of every day, and so many others. Indonesian is a ridiculously easy language to learn, but the nuance of the accent/dialect is very difficult and impossible to capture in a book. This is a great first introduction to Indonesian! I bought this before I traveled to Indonesia for a month-long stay. I had no prior exposure to Indonesian before this book and my travel, and though it is most helpful for traditional tourist travel, I still found it very useful! It is divided into logical sections, so you can read through the whole book, or just jump to the section that is most related to what you need to know right then. It's colorful and cleanly laid-out, allowing for easy navigation. Plus, it's small making it easy to throw in your bag without taking up much space (or weight)! If you are looking for an introductory book I would highly recommend this one!

I went to Indonesia for a month for an academic program where I mainly interacted with Indonesian university students and residents of a remote coastal village on Java. Very little English was spoken, but thanks to this book I was able to express almost everything I wanted to. I had no Internet so I could not use Google translate and this book was my only resource. But that didn't matter because this book has so, so much content laid out in a very easily accessible way. The cultural information boxes are also super helpful and made the book an interesting read in my free time. I studied phrases and memorized words from its extensive dictionary every night, and people were consistently impressed with how well I could speak Indonesian, despite the fact that I hadn't studied the language at all before my trip. This is not another silly little travel phrasebook you will never use. It is an interesting, intuitive, conveniently sized book that is key to connecting with other people in Indonesia.

A lot of info is stuffed in a small pocket book. It will come handy if you are traveling to Hong Kong or Guang-dong region.Here are a couple of things I liked about this book. (1)Even though the fonts are small (ie, pocket version), it does not strain the eyes because the paper is high quality and has colored fonts. (2)It has the Chinese characters next to all the sentences and words. I did not like those books which only have the romanization but no Chinese characters. In the long run you really need to know them. (3) A lot of handy info/words/sentences included (such as 'I want to make love to you' or 'leave me alone!')I have two reasons I can't give 5 stars: (1) It does NOT use the 'standard Yale' system--it could be a little confusing to those using Yale system (why don't everybody just use Yale???);(2)right off the bat, I noticed couple typo/errors in the pronounciation--I would use as a reference, not the primary source of studying Cantonese.Overall, I think it is a worth investment, especially considering the low cost.

I just returned from two weeks in Indonesia and found the Lonely Planet Indonesian Phrasebook & Dictionary to be indispensable in many situations, especially when shopping and in hotels, plus making acquaintances wherever I went. Also, the book is full of historical and cultural information. To anyone who doesn't speak the language, I would say, don't leave home without it. Hint - It helps to learn as much as you can from the book before leaving.

Sandra Day O’Connor was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised on the Lazy B Ranch. She attended Stanford University, where she took Wallace Stegner’s writing course. For me this was a 5 star wow, right from the get go, so it was interesting to see how wildly the reviews vary in Amazon. From my perspective, I never realized just how myopic our view is of the Supreme Court - what it is, and what it does, until I read this book. For instance, I never really understood how much of what the supreme court does derives from their own rulings, and not from a well defined constitutional authority. And the current brouhaha over the Garland nomination, which seemed like high political drama, pales in comparison to previous political disputes that have surrounded the Supreme Court. This book provides a good history of the Supreme Court, but in the context of the personalities that shaped it. I think what some reviewers wanted was a more politically oriented book, which this is not.

Out of Order: Stories from the History of the Supreme Court by Sandra Day O'Connor"Out of Order" is a brief history of anecdotes from the Supreme Court. Sandra Day O'Connor provides a mildly insightful and readable book but overall it's disappointing. The book fails to take advantage of the unique insights that a pioneer of O'Connor's caliber would have had. It's a book that quite frankly could have been written by almost any historian. It was a missed opportunity, it should have provided readers with the historical perspective from the first woman of the Supreme Court. In fact, the Justices spent a lot more time riding circuit than they did hearing cases at the Supreme Court".10. The evolution of the caseload. The number and control of the cases to be decided. "But perhaps the culmination of this trend came with Chief Justice John Roberts. Includes The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America and the Constitution of the United States.Negatives:1. Overall disappointed. The book is not engaging at all. I was hoping to hear O'Connor's voice, get HER opinions, at the very least interesting stories from HER perspective but sadly no.2. O'Connor should feel free to voice her opinions. She is no longer a working Justice, time to loosen up.3. Even in the chapter on the "Firsts", O'Connor doesn't really say much about her tenure.4. If the chapter "Some Laughs on the Bench" is any indication, the Supreme Court lacks humor indeed. At least we learn Scalia has a tendency to laugh a lot.5. The book really lacks depth.6. The book doesn't link to notes.7. The book seems rushed to me.8. No formal bibliography.9. There are much better books about the Supreme Court.In summary, In summary, a mixed bag. There are some interesting anecdotes and amusing stories but overall I was disappointed. Sandra Day O'Connor failed to open up to the readers. She doesn't provide her voice, her opinions, her perspective. Such a missed opportunity to engage the readers with her unique experiences as the first woman of the Supreme Court. I was honestly hoping for more. Pick a copy from the library but not worthy of a purchase.Further suggestions: "My Beloved World" by Sonia Sotomayor, "The Oath: The Obama White House and The Supreme Court" and "The Nine" by Jeffrey Toobin, "Making Our Democracy Work: A Judge's View" by Stephen Breyer, "Matter of Interpretation : Federal Courts and the Law" by Antonin Scalia, "The U.S. Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction" by Linda Greenhouse, "Five Chiefs: A Supreme Court Memoir" by John Paul Stevens, and "The Brethren" by Bob Woodward.

I really wanted to like this book. I am a huge supreme court follower and have admired Justice O'Connor ever since she was appointed over 30 years ago. Before reading this book, I heard Justice O'Connor interviewed by Terri Gross on 'Fresh Air' on NPR, and it excited me about the book. Sadly, the book does not live up to all the hype one would expect when any sitting or former Supreme Court justice picks up the pen.The book is very superficial in its coverage of the different stories that Justice O'Connor describes. There is very little depth to the book, and I often found myself wanting to know more about what I was reading. Particularly disappointing was the chapter entitled "The Call To Serve" which essentially describes every president and who he nominated to the Supreme Court, but not in any significant detail. Towards the end, Justice O'Connor talks about 4 unique and memorable justices - Justices Field, Holmes, McReynolds and Douglas - but the treatment is so superficial that one feels the need to go and read more about these distinguished men in order to really understand what they were about.There are some bright spots to the book. The chapter entitled "Itinerant Justice" is fascinating in its coverage of when justices were required to ride circuit. The two latter chapters "Customs and Traditions of the Supreme Court" and "Some Laughs on the Bench" also are quite interesting. Overall, these few bright spots are again marred by the superficial coverage given to the topics in them by the author.What makes me sad about this book is that it could have been so much better. There are numerous fascinating books out there about the Supreme Court - Peter Irons' "A People's History of the Supreme Court" comes to mind - and this one could have been among the ranks. But, unfortunately, it tries to cover too many things in too superficial a fashion, and as a result, doesn't really break new ground at all.For the Supreme Court lover, this one is nice to have to keep on the bookshelves with all the others. For others, it might be worth passing on this book and read one of Justice O'Connor's other excellent books.

This is a fascinating history of the establishment and evolution of the United States Supreme Court, by the first woman justice, Sandra Day O'Connor. It came as a surprise to learn that the Supreme Court didn't even have its own premises until 1935, and in the very early days, the court had very little work ! The author pays great respect to Chief Justice John Marshall, who brought the court to prominence in his long period of office, and pulls no punches in describing the rude and cantankerous Justice McReynolds. She details President Roosevelts attempt to 'stack' the court and also describes former President Taft's appointment as Chief Justice as the 'crowning achievement of his career'It would have been interesting to learn more about the justice's remuneration; what was John Jay's salary compared to President Washington ? How does Chief Justice Roberts salary compere to President Obama ?
