I read this after I read Jennifer Chiaverini's novel, Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker. Keckley's book is extraordinary because she was not educated until she was an adult. Chiaverini's book gives the impression that Keckley's book was heavily edited by her New York publisher; this seems plausible. Still, it is a slave memoir in which Keckley had a loving relationship with her charges that was very much reciprocated, Her musings about the President and Mrs. Lincoln are priceless! If the book ended before the chaotic errors made by the widowed Mrs. Lincoln, it would have been a five-star memoir. Also, the publisher's decision to include letters from Mary Todd Lincoln to Keckley seems overdone. It does show that Mary truly valued Keckley as a friend, but that could have been evident from just a couple of the letters. This is an important book because it illustrates firsthand how blacks of the mid-19th century treasured President Lincoln for ending slavery. Keckley's thoughts about the President are heartwarming.
Elizabeth Keckley experienced the horrors of slavery.. Still she says that it did have a few good points. That seems amazingly charitable considering all she suffered. This only adds credibility to her very candid account. Hers is definitely not a sensationalized story. From those humble circumstances, she moved to Washington DC, and through hard work, started her own business to support herself and her son. Her work caught the eye of the wives of several prominent national leaders of both sides of the arguments that erupted into to the Civil War. Her talents soon took her to the White House where she became a friend and confidant of Mrs. Lincoln. From this association, we get an inside and personal look into the Lincoln family and Lincoln himself during these tragic and turbulent times. Elizabeth shares these stories with the same unvarnished candor that she shares her own story. This is an amazing story by an amazing woman who I wasn't aware existed before I discovered this book. The best histories are not in the history books.
I found this book fascinating. I could not put it down. She tell about her time as a slave-the abuse and well treatment alike. How she bought her freedom and how her seamstress business led her to the white house and much more. Her time with the Mary Todd Lincoln and how she loved her. She understood Mrs.Lincoln like no one else could.
This is an incredible book, one of the best I have read. She is an impressive and descriptive writer and her story as sad as it is compelling. The book dispels some myths about slavery beginning with any beliefs about intelligence given her enormous skill as a writer. Gender assumptions are next to fall; the women could be brutal in their treatment of slaves. When Kickley's father is about to be sold and her mother is crying, the master's wife says I am sure you will quickly find another one. Religion plays a role in slavery, and one is horrified about the evil of the southern white churches and their ministers. Assigned to work for the master's son, a minister, she is hard-working but dignified. Slaves could be beaten by anyone and a friend of the master beats her for her lack of public obeisance. In the Southern Church, she appeared to a contest about how many of Jesus' instructions one could violate.Despite her trevails, while in slavery, she creates a dress-making business under her master's supervision (with profits to held fund her freedom).Historically, she provides considerable insight, for example, explaining that Jefferson Davis was not captured in a woman's dress but an item she had crafted while working for Mrs. Davis. An astonishing achievement. I'd love to get more biographies like this instead of the typical self-serving tripe typically meted out.
Somehow this book showed up on my "to read" queue, so I decided to skim it. What a surprise! It was fascinating. It is not only about a slave lady, it was written by her back around 1868. Her writing style is entertaining and shows the language of the times; quite interesting. She also became Mary Todd Lincoln's best friend and had the inside track to Mrs. President Lincoln's "pecuniary embarrassment" after the assassination of President Lincoln. The book is a fast read, quite enjoyable and gives a unique insight to our culture in that complicated time. If you are curious about slavery and/or Lincoln's family life, this is one book you'll want to read.
