About the Author
Minh Lê is a writer but, like his grandfather, is a man of few words. He is a national early childhood policy expert, author of Let Me Finish! (illustrated by Isabel Roxas), and has written for the New York Times, the Horn Book, and the Huffington Post. A first-generation Vietnamese-American, he went to Dartmouth College and has a master's in education from Harvard University. Outside of spending time with his beautiful wife and sons in their home near Washington, DC, Minh's favorite place to be is in the middle of a good book. This is the book that I have been waiting for all my life!I have so many students in my classroom that are not able to communicate with their grandparents, because their fluency in the language is not high enough. This book opens the doors to creative communication across generations. I love that the boy in the text is able to express himself through art, and finds this common thread with this grandfather.I love how the Thai language and artwork is seamlessly integrated throughout the entire text. It is a beautiful book that can be used to teach many different lessons, without relying heavily on language.
I'm not sure how this wonderful children's book got on my radar but I'm so thankful that it got my attention. While I don't have a little one to give it to right now, I have four grown grandchildren and I am acquiring a hope chest for my great grandchildren. And what is more important than a good book!This children's book is really timeless and ageless. Both my husband and I loved it. Ideally, however, it is for younger children. Like the classic, 'Where the Wild Things Are', this is a book with few words. Most of the story is told through the lovely illustrations that draw the reader in. The artwork is fantastical and interesting throughout.A young boy, apparently raised in the United States, is visiting his aged Vietnamese grandfather. The boy doesn't appear happy to be visiting. The boy speaks no Vietnamese and the grandfather speaks no English. Their tastes in television are widely disparate. It is through drawing and art that they find their love and connection. With a brush and their adventurous spirits, "All the things we could never say come pouring out and we build a new world that even words can't describe". This shared love of drawing changes the dynamic of their relationship to one of love and respect.Do yourself and your child a favor. Get this book!!!!!
A must add to any classroom, one of the most beautiful picture books of 2018
Absolutely stunning. A wonderful collaboration between author & illustrator. With themes of family and communication, this will definitely be a #classroombookaday for my students in the fall.
I can see the gap between my nieces and my parents, and I think this book helps address that. It is hard for them to communicate as they don't have a lot in common, but I hope by reading this book, they will learn to find some common ground. The drawings are lovely, and the graphic form of narration is a great way to introduce graphic novels to a young reader.
