We have different needs and preferences when it comes to travel books. For me, Fodor's does the job exceptionally well with consistent quality information presented in a well-organized framework and written by people who live and work there. This book on Scotland is no frills good writing and is practical and educational. No color photos, which you find on the internet anyway. Good background material, helpful travel suggestions, and wise itineraries. I've been to Scotland three times and am planning another trip. I'll take Fodor's and my Michelin map of Scotland. That's it.

This travel guide helped my husband and I plan an amazing two week summer vacation for our family. We have three boys who are all under the age of ten and even with having little ones with us, there were tons of family attractions, events and museums that were listed as family friendly. Often times, we would double check the book for tips on whether an attraction was suitable for younger children and most of the places we went to, were listed in the guide as child friendly or as adults only. If something wasn't listed, we'd look up the website, which was provided in the guide, to find what we needed to know.This guide is well worth the money. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is unfamiliar with Colorado or for those who only go once or twice a year, as our family does. Even with my husband growing up in Colorado and us going there every summer for the past decade, there are always new places to check out, new restaurants, site seeing and adventures to be had. With going to Colorado, you'll never be bored. Anything you could think of to do outdoors, is basically at your fingertips.

We used this book to plan our trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. The sections are broken down into regions which makes it easy to see what's available in the area you want to visit, any festivals that may be happening, While our trip was mainly to RMNP, I was hoping to have found a little more information in the book about Estes Park, Colorado which was the town we stayed in. There are a lot of things to do there, and if your focus is in the park like ours was, I would have expected more information on hotels and restaurants.

Doesn't include any pull out or rip out maps, and the color pages aren't high quality, but you can't ever really go wrong with Fodor's. If I had to buy it again, I'd look for the more expensive version with maps and high quality picture pages.

This is a good guide for a first trip to Colorado as it covers the key landmarks... the reason for 4 starts instead of 5 is that it could use better maps of each of the areas that are covered. I understand it's not meant to replace an actual map, but some of the chapters of the book don't even have a dedicated map that helps locate and situate the points of interest.

Very useful in trip planning. The only miss was the museum reviews which missed the KIRKLAND MUSEUM OF FINE & DECORATIVE ART, but on the other hand the reviews also lead me to the American Museum of the West, which is a hidden gem.

It doesn't cover everything to know about the location, but rather pushes 10 different places that are especially nice that you aren't going to want to miss. Between the amazing nature, rich history and culture, and the amazing architecture, this is a place that is perfect for almost anyone. The author does a wonderful job of clearly explaining the different locations. I know I am ready to book a flight and start exploring this magical place!

This really should be called a magazine, it's hardly a book. It's a few pages each on the top 10 locations in the DR. I could have printed this info out off the internet and saved myself the $10

In that moment it was this incredible combination feeling of pure joy and fear and love and anxiety and excitement and terror and everything was perfect. I still to this day remember that moment and the feelings it brought to me so vividly. I love that baby with every single ounce of love a human being has inside of them. The other day he grabbed a ball and put it through his play hoop he has at their house.This book is like if you took those moments from above and sprinkled them on top of a bean and cheese taco from Jalisco's in S Houston.It's Perfect.Buy it once.Then buy it again.

As someone who loves the NBA but didn't come online until the late 90's, this book was wildly entertaining and informative. Hilarious character dynamics make the NBA the most entertaining league in the world, and Shea does a great job of weaving these hilarious stories into his 25 questions about the NBA. For example, there is a brief, hilarious retelling of how Celtics GM, Danny Ainge, "rocketed the ball 100 miles an hour" into Mario Elie's face during the 1994 WCF. This is then followed by a Zach Lowe story where Ainge admits to eating Chipotle seven days a week.Some of the 3-part chapters are an admitted slog, especially if you didn't grow up in the eras he is talking about, but the format allows you to skip it if you REALLY can't bear to read the 10 pages they span.

I work in publishing and I can confirm that Shea is one of the most important contemporary authors of our time. In a world of darkness and hate, he is a beacon of positivity, humor, and goodwill to all men (especially LaMarcus Aldridge who is vastly underpaid). 2018 was a ROUGH year for me. One bright spark of joy was...the Queer Eye show on Netflix! I've been a Jonathan Van Ness fan FOREVER so I was ecstatic to see that he was cast on the show. I immediately fell in love with the entire Fab Five team. The show was truly a ray of hope, joy, and optimism in the midst of a very tough time. When I saw that they had a book...I flipped out! I don't think I've ever rushed over to Amazon so fast! The book is beautiful. I love reading a few pages every morning while drinking coffee. It inspires me to be kinder to myself and take better care of myself all day long. Bravo to everyone who helped produce this book! OK, now I need to go jade roller my face just like Jonathan instructs.

This has already been an incredible gift for my friends, coworkers, and family members who are big Queer Eye fans! I love seeing the Fab 5 expand into another medium. Can't recommend this enough!

I can’t sing enough praises for this book. It gives you the story’s of what makes all the fab 5 who they are, and then gives you advice that’s general enough that you can apply it to yourself as if you’re on the show. But specific enough that it kinda does feel like they’re actually just talking to you. This book is absolutely full of character and a must have for a fan of Queer Eye.

The queer eye 5 are fabulous all around so after watching the Netflix seasons and seeing this book come out I ordered without hesitation.

I just graduated from college, and I wish I’d read this in high school. My roommate’s mother who works as a financial consultant recommended it. This book is the clearest introduction to investing I’ve found anywhere. It helped me understand all the options, and it uses academic research to back up its recommendations. It’s easy to read, requiring very little prior knowledge, and gives you great advice about how to invest your savings responsibly. I’m lucky to have found this gem so early in my career so I know I’ll be able to save for long term goals like buying a house, having kids, and retiring comfortably!

Great book for beginners. I buy these to give to people who have given no thought as to how to prepare for their future...and there are a lot of these. I was one of them, and thankfully I woke up in time, so I have made it a point to try to urge young people to give some thought to their financial future. This book is very accessible to someone who "hasn't got a clue." Several people I know began saving and investing as a result of reading the copy I gave them, and it is going to make a world of difference to them when they reach retirement age. So if you are one of the people "without a clue," this is the book for you.

After my 35 plus years of investing, I totally agree accept with his overall recommendation to use bond mutual funds for the fixed income portion. Normally I would agree, however with interest rates at about 40 year lows, and going up, laddered new issue bank cd's between 1 through 5 years is better. Vanguard, Fidelity, or Schwab can 'hand hold' through the process for free and no commissions or annual expenses. Plus the are federally insured.

If you're starting out on investing, this book is a very-much appreciated start and this is coming from a fellow newbie. I really appreciated the addressing of the facts from fiction on the consumer economics behind the investment sector. The sector that monitors sectors. I believe this book sets the tone of the proper perspective one should have before investing.The book establishes a baseline and inserts itself right in the middle of most americans, investment instruments for wealth and financial advisers. I don't believe any favors were made by writing this book except to be honest with the readers. Having just recently started investing as I approach 40 I've become more of an open airwave antenna picking up all the market news and signals. We have input sensors on 16 hours a day and we need to be cognizant of 'decision triggers'. The author associates the same principles to investing and tactfully shows the alternate view. The polite presentation of the views allow room for the investigative reader to explorer riskier areas (stocks). The tech stocks these days seem to be a lighthouse (not like the light bulb on the cover, but I'm in Tech... can't.. reeezist).The author is a CPA as clearly noted on the cover. That is, the letter designation for passing the much harder Series test. Ok, so I didn't mention the contents of the book. Hey, it's a "100 pages or less" and the man deserves his keep.

This did a good job of demystifying a lot of investing concepts. Having done some additional reading since, I can say that this was a very solid introduction and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to start here as opposed to having to wade through the dregs of the internet trying to find clear, concise information.

As I write this review every other review for this great little book gives it five stars and that is well deserved.For new investors, or for ANY investor who is not really (and I mean *really*) sure they are on top of things, this book is where to begin. It will show you the big picture and give you a clear view of every important aspect of investing for the long haul.There are other books that go into more detail or that have more rigorous theoretical discussion. Some have very entertaining histories and anecdotes, but most of those swamp the beginner in side issues or details one can't appreciate without the concise overview provided here. There are also many other introductory books, and I have read a few, but this one stands out for its clarity.You actually don't *need* any more than is in this book, but if you start to dig into the resources listed at the end you will probably want to dig deeper and learn more. When I came across this book I had already read most of what it lists in the Resources section and can say it contains a great selection.I read this book after about six months of self-education about investment strategies and can say that it covers all the important aspects in a highly organized way that is easy to follow. After reading this I bought three more copies to give to my (adult) children. I didn't think any of the other books I read would have been of any use to them. Perhaps after they read this one they will follow up on their own.

But that's ok, I knew that going in. If you are completely new to investing, this is actually a fantastic book because it will instil that important first impression that is critical when you first realize it's necessary for you to at least start reading about this stuff... that there is really not all that much to know! this easy to read book is guaranteed to take a weight off your shoulders and point you in the right direction for the small amount of reading you'll need to do over and above what's in this already. In the preface of JOY, Abigail Santamaria tells of an incident that occurred during her preliminary research into Joy Davidman's life. Most of the first hand witnesses to Joy's life were either long dead or in advanced old age, but a few remained to "set the record straight". One of them was the former Ruth Davidman, the first wife of Howard Davidman, Joy's brother. At first, Ruth was hesitant to be interviewed for this project and was leery to be a part of a book that was determined to "perpetuate the myth". Santamaria assured her that she only wanted to write a true account of Joy's life and was prepared to be objective and truthful. This author absolutely lived up to her word and has painted a portrait that is credible but not exactly what fans of CS Lewis and Joy Davidman have come to expect.The book starts with Joy's background - her parents and grandparents story of immigration, hardship and poverty in a new country and how they rose from the lowest rung of society to being involved, educated and contributing citizens of this nation. Then there is the account of Joy's childhood, brilliance and education that prepared her to take a place among the intellectual elite of the early to mid 20th century. All of this is played out in front of a backdrop of a painful longing and searching that kept her restless and unsatisfied - and it was this searching spirit that drove her life - causing her to start out as an idealistic extremist, only to be disappointed and ultimately disillusioned until she had an unexpected Spiritual encounter that completely altered the course of her life. The first half of the book was a bit slow moving, but it was interesting and exactly what I expected. As a southern, Christian, conservative woman, this was a peek into the experience of people whose lives are completely different from anything that I had known, and I enjoyed seeing the inner workings of a culture that is largely unfamiliar to me. But, it was the last half of the book that left me breathless and my head spinning with the moral dilemmas presented by a woman who was incredibly complex. I couldn't put it down, and I assure you that the material contained in this book will have you asking yourself, "who is God?", and did Joy really find Him? I'm not prepared to answer that but I think I'll be pondering this for a long time to come. I don't know if I ever completely bought into "the myth", but I did expect something more orthodox than what I found here. As a Christian, the true story challenged many of my deepest presuppositions, and I found myself crying as it played out on the pages of this raw, painfully honest and riveting book.This is a very interesting read. All of my adult life I have been captivated by CS Lewis's writings and wished to know more about him and his wife. It isn't what I expected, but I appreciated the courage the author displayed when she told the story of the real Joy. The popular perception of CS Lewis is a veritable legend in some circles and having the real story "outed" so thoroughly was a major eye opener to me. So, I'm giving this book 4 stars, because it is well done, but I'm deducting one star because the first half of the book was a little bit tedious. Even though the the early chapters are somewhat slow moving, I wouldn't advise you to skip them because they lay the foundation for everything that goes on in the second half. You might have to apply some effort to get through the section covering her early years, but this is an important part of the whole story. It really is worth making the effort to read in it's entirety.Joy's son, Douglas Gresham has written a memoir of his childhood called, "Lenten Lands: My Childhood With Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis". I have ordered it from Amazon to see if his account squares with the story that is told here. Famous people who carry a religious banner for others to follow don't always live up to the persona that people project onto them. I don't think either Jack or Joy ever set out to make themselves into icons of 20th century Christianity - others did that to them. However a close look will show two people with plenty of baggage, faults and failings. If you harbor illusions that you don't want shattered, then I advise you to skip this book. If you can handle a very bumpy and challenging ride then you just might find this to be worth your while.As for me, I intend to re-read all of my CS Lewis books and ask myself the question, "did I really understand what he was saying or was I projecting my own opinions in a way that made me hear what I wanted to hear?" I think I'll start with A GRIEF OBSERVED.*****************************************UPDATE December 18th, 2015: I just finished reading LENTEN LANDS by Joy's son, Douglas Gresham. It is a good companion to this book, and while the perspective of a son, (looking through the lens of love) softens some of what you will find in the biography, JOY: POET, SEEKER AND THE WOMAN WHO CAPTIVATED C.S. LEWIS, I didn't find anything that would lead me to suspect that Abigail Santamaria's book is not accurate. The harsher realities were things that a son might not have been privy to, but if you read closely, the two books pretty much authenticate each other. And much of what is contained in JOY, was taken directly from Joy Davidman's own writings. LENTEN LANDS didn't take away from JOY, but it did add a more human and forgiving angle, just as Santamaria gave us a more realistic and objective story. One is not complete without the other and I'm glad I read both.

I am a long-time fan of C.S. Lewis and his writings; ever since I read the Chronicles of Narnia as a child. I have read many, if not most, of his books (excluding his academic writings). Dr. Clyde Kilby was my professor at Wheaton College in the late 60s and he would share with our class about his visits to the Kilns and with Lewis's brother, Warnie, to try to bring some of Lewis's belongings to the College for accessibility, appreciation, and study. As you may know, the Wardrobe (inspiration for THE Wardrobe) that is at the Wade Center, is there primarily due to the efforts of Dr. Kilby. At least that is my understanding. That being said, my husband and I visited the Kiln's last fall, Oxford University/Magdalen College, and walked Addison's walk, and had two special meals at The Eagle and Child.I love history, biography, and stories of God's redemption; plus I am a New Yorker! Because of this I did connect to the book and author. I loved the details and even read the notes. I could picture Joy growing up in NYC, attending college at Hunter and Columbia, and yet being quite dysfunctional due to her dysfunctional home. She was brilliant, yet probably did have a grandiose view of self.What struck me was how God chose her, who appears to be an unlikely person, to redeem. I was deeply touched by the description of the night when she turned to God. She was redeemed but still a sinner...both Joy's and Lewis's life stories offer hope to me. They both had a yearning for a place just beyond their grasp, that God had planted in their hearts.While she pursued Jack Lewis he was attracted to Joy;s mind and her ability to help him work through his own sad childhood (first through two years of letter writing and later in face to face conversation. Yes, he may have been immature in his relationships with women, but God is sovereign and did allow this relationship to develop. Joy brought Lewis her mixed up self, and together, with God, they experienced human love and some emotional and spiritual healing. I don't condone all of Joy's behavior, but I definitely see the hand of God at work in their story.After they were married the second time, Joy and her two sons came to live with Lewis and his brother Warnie. Two little brothers with two big brothers. When Joy died, all four of them would have lost their mothers at a young age (as Jack and Warnie lost their mother when they were young boys.) As Edith Schaeffer would say, God was weaving a beautiful tapestry.The parts about NYC, the communist party, and Joy's life with Bill Gresham was fascinating and sad to me. As a nurse, I made the connection between the radium treatments for thyroid problems and Joy's later diagnosis of cancer. I do wish there had been more details at the end especially about what happened to sons David and Douglas, but perhaps I will read Lenten Lands one day. I did get Joy's Smoke on the Mountain (about the Ten Commandments) as a result of reading the book.I heard Ms. Santamaria do a book talk a few months back in NYC and hope she will continue to research and write biographies.
