Freddie goes home to Jersey where he tends the farm with his father until he decides that he needs to help in the fight. Lexi just wants to contribute and volunteers, driving ambulances and delivering supplies in England. Meri joins the V.A.D. and is nursing in a field hospital in France. Charles is fighting in the trenches and is soon joined by Freddie. Freddie is wounded in the face and is evacuated to the field hospital where Meri is a nurse. Eventually Freddie ends up in a Facial Reconstruction Hospital in Amiens where everything possible is done to repair the damage done to his face.I could just re-write the story in my review, because there are so many facets of this novel. However, I must say that reading this novel gave a true glimpse of what had to be the most horrible type of warfare. Human beings maimed and killed over a swath of land known as “no man’s land”, constant barrage of munitions, mud, filth, deprivation. This book follows these four young people as they come to grips with their lives during and after the war. With carnage and damage surrounding them, can they even think of going on with new lives.I enjoyed the book from the historical viewpoint, but it was hard reading of the terrible injuries and the attempts of the men and women to overcome them.

It was a love story with a lot of history of WW1 woven through it. The broken faces title refers to the soldiers whose faces were maimed while fighting in France. The families and their homes were beautifully described. The nurses and support people came to life in this heart breaking, at times, story. I think you will like the ending.

I loved this book and did not want it to end. I fell in love with the characters and felt their pain, and happiness. Sure there were some gory war parts but mostly the lives of four special people. This is a must read!

A story about WWI and all the horror war can bring. But even during war time life goes on; people find love and hope for a better future. An excellent story!

I found this incredibly hard to put down. I don't read a lot of historical fiction, but this enthralled me from the beginning, and as I went along, I couldn't help wondering what would happen next. And, of course, there was the happily after ever I crave - even if the characters did have to go through hell to get there. I can't wait to see what DM Carr has in store for readers next.

Could not put this book down - so heart wrenching in places, so explicit in places - gave a real insight into the tragic injuries suffered by so many during the great war. Love is oh so strong and not everyone realises it!Seriously recommend this book if you like war stories!

The story was ok but dragged on & no one being honest or telling the truth. It ended happy with all problems worked out.

If you have a weak stomach do not read as there are parts in the book that are gorey . But, with that being said I so enjoyed this book. Definitely a lot of suspense and a great love story. I will definitely follow this author

I love this coloring book!! The pictures carry a lot of detail but nothing too overwhelming. No matter what colors you choose to color with, the end results is always fantastic. The patterns are beautiful on their own, as well. The pages are one sided to allow for use of markers or gel pens, neither of which I use. I prefer colored pencils. The paper is smooth and the pencils glide across it.

This is a wonderful coloring book with artistic drawings of animals that will delight any animal lover. I just received this book yesterday and have finished coloring the turtle. I used gel pens for this picture but some of the drawings will have to be colored with pencils as some of the pictures have tiny, tiny areas. I am very happy with this book and would recommend it to anyone that isn't afraid of a challenge.PS: The grey areas on the turtle are actually silver and look much better than the picture does it justice.I also use Staedtler Triplus Fineliner gel pens. They are very fine-tipped and can reach those tiny areas. Shout-out to the publishers for sending a new copy of this book for free. That one included the lion drawing. I loved this book before now I have one more reason to love it even more.

Lots of cool pictures to color, each page has a blank back which is great so that your markers do not bleed through onto another picture. Has a mixture of extremely detailed pictures and slightly less detailed ones which is a nice variety to have.

UPDATE 6/11/15: I received my replacement book and it looks like the old book was very much misprinted. As you can see in my pics the designs on the left (misprint book) the lines are much darker and smaller, the animals are printed the wrong way, etc. I think this is what was causing my frustration with the book. There's also designs in the replacement that I didn't have in the old one, and the designs I did not like in the misprint are not in the new book. Updating my review to 5 stars.______________________________________________________________________I work behind a computer all day and have a 2 year old so I wanted something to do when the day is over to help me unwind (that doesn't involve looking at a screen). I thought coloring would be a good outlet.This animal coloring book is filled with very unique designs, and is made well. The pages are one sided so you can use markers if you want. Some of the designs are really cool, however, I do not love this book as much as I thought I would.Some of the pictures have such small lines that it's hard to color them with colored pencils unless you plan on keeping the tips of your pencils extremely sharp and even sometimes that doesn't matter. Some pictures have way too many black lines which makes it impossible to color. This is what I do not find relaxing about this book.Note: The copy I received was missing the lion page like on the front cover but my understanding was this was due to a misprint and the seller is happy to replace if you email them. I have requested a replacement because I wanted the lion picture.So over all, I'll give this book 3 stars.

I really want to like this book. It has some really good designs. Some are better than others, however. It's inconsistent in style and approproiate levels of detail. That lion is only partially done because I've grown annoyed with how tedious these designs can be. The geometry and intricacy is created with purposeless lines. I like the horse because the design had flow. It felt like a ribbon was wandering, and to figure out what to color where, just follow the design. The elephant was a little random but I still liked the Indian influence. I want to like my lion. But right now, I don't feel inspired to finish him, and I don't know what design I will do next because I don't know if I feel like putting that much thought into it. By forcing intricacy, it takes away some of the creativity and freedom and doing your own thing. I think I'll switch to another book for a while and see how I feel.

This book is FANTASTIC! I generally buy adult coloring books and only get excited about a few patterns; this was the reverse - there were only a few patterns I wasn't terribly excited about. I really liked the red and orange color scheme that Jackie used on the kitty she worked on, so I tried my version with 5 complimentary colors in that same palate, and have uploaded it here. As you can see, you really can't go wrong! The beautifully-lined drawings meander you through your animal with a chosen color so, by the time you have changed colors a number of times only using care to ensure that no two of the same colors are touching, you automatically have a gorgeous mosaic without much effort. Some of the lines did get me a little squinty-eyed, but that's aging for you, and that's what bright lights and glasses are for. I used bold colors with triplus fineliner pens which WILL bleed through most papers, but this paper was thick enough that I could aggressively apply color and have it saturate through the page a little yet NOT so much that it affected the next drawing (I'm also uploading a second picture to demonstrate that). I can't speak more highly of this product. "Their drawin' makes my colorin' look GOOD!' ;)

Absolutely beautiful. I had a horrible day and i feel so much better. And the pages are a good thickness so its ok to use markers. Very happy with this book.

I've given several coloring books for adults who are hospitalized and/or home bound and they've been a real hit. Quite often, visitors are invited to join in so the results include good memories as well as pretty patterns. This book in particular has especially beautiful designs and are gorgeous when colored. It's hard to choose a favorite.

It looks like I was sent one of the bad printings. Over all the coloring book is ok but there are quite a few misprinted pages. Hopefully can get a new one sent out to me but would rather not deal with having to send this one back. I would think that since this have been an on going issues judging from other reviews that the printer would have fixed them all by now.

Beautifully illustrated and engagingly written, with a very helpful historical timeline included as an addendum. Highly recommend!

I purchased this book because I had read good reviews about it and wanted to share it with graduate students who plan to teach Shakespeare in secondary education. I was pleased with the book, mainly because it illuminates Shakespeare and the early modern theater via an accessible text and attractive illustrations. My students liked the book, too, and may use it as a supplemental text in the future.

Great resource!

I found this book at my local library, and was enchanted by it. I taught high school English for almost twenty years, and taught several of Shakespeare's plays within that time; how I wish I had this book then! This exquisite book details the life of the Bard, his times, and his works. The illustrations are beautifully executed, the passages chosen are perfect; I cannot think of one thing that I do not like about this book. It is perfect for older children as an introduction to Shakespeare and his time, and to older students and adults! Who doesn't enjoy lovely drawings along with the reading. This book should be in every public library, in every school library, and in every classroom from at least fifth grade through twelfth. It is a wondrous book!

As other reviewers have said, the kindle version of this book is a disaster. There is no table of contents, index, etc. for organization. Don't waste your time.

I was so impressed with a newspaper feature on Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier that I ordered the book right away. I was not disappointed. There are few books I have ever encountered that are more thoroughly researched -- and so entertaining. The book is either a conversation starter (or spoiler, depending on your audience). Keyes delights in debunking commonly held assumptions about famous quotes, but there's no malice. Just meticulous and entertaining research. He points out the evolution of quotations (often much like the children's game of Telephone). I love how this wonderful reference is organized: alphabetically according to key words, interspersed with special sections on those who are frequently quoted, and a "verdict" at the end of each entry to help the reader reach a decision on a quote's origin or evolution). Thus, a special section on Yogi Berra tracks down a bunch of alleged "Yogi-isms." You might be surprised. I was. Gems abound a nearly every page. And the research is cited in a way that makes it fun to learn the origin of a phrase (or the lack of such knowledge). An example is the famous phrase "Iron Curtain." It is commonly known that Winston Churchill used that phrase in a 1946 sppech about Soviet influence. But Keyes exhaustively points out a whole bunch of similar uses that occurred much earlier. Then he gives a verdict: "Many authors, one key publicist -- Winston Churchill." I loved reading the blurb on the phrase "fifteen minutes of fame" (is it Andy Warhol's? Hey, I don't want to give away the juicy tidbits) and on the phrase "May you live in interesting times" (is it really of Chineses origin?). And so many others. Keyes's book has delighted me so much I recently found it a worthy companion on a long trip. I recommend this book to teachers and professors (even just to educate students in acquiring a healthy skepticism), news reporters and editors, talk show hosts, and anyone interested in history or good conversation. It should be on every library shelf, both public and private.

Hard to locate what you are looking to find

I love quotes and I never really trust the source. Well, this book exhaustively evaluates who said what. Sometimes the conclusion is almost as unbelievable as the source of the quote.I like the book very much! There are too many quotes where they cannot definitively conlude who the original author is. They leave it to a kind of "Unresolved" state. I'd almost wish they would attribute it to the most likely source and not to two or three as they sometimes do.The explanations could have been written more clearly.

This book sorts out familiar quotes, and tracks down who really said those words. Helps you from looking foolish so you don't misquote some guy during your speech to the Kiwanis club. Like a dictionary, it is seldom used every day - but when you need it, it's there.

This is not the type of book to read straight through, but rather to pick up from time to time and learn the brief history of the most famous quotations in English history. Most often, the myth does not match the fact. But, the history is never dull and Keyes' words explaining how the quote gained popular notice are often fascinating.

The book itself, as other reviewers have indicated, seems to be outstanding. But the Kindle edition is a disaster. If one wants to look up a quote, keyword and author indexes are vital to finding anything. They are disabled on the Kindle -- nice lists of keywords and names, but no links, no page numbers, no other way to get to the entries. Even "start of entry for each letter" entries in the Table of Contents would help, but it goes directly from "The Quotes" on page 1 to "Bibliography" on page 259. There is a note at the top of the Key Word Index that says that the index in the print version doesn't match that pages of the eBook and then suggests using "the search function on the eReading device to search for terms of interest..." but an attempt to use the Kindle's search function produces a "Title not yet indexed" error message.Almost totally useless -- buy the printed book or make another plan.

This is exactly the book that I needed for work. It's a great resource for business reference and I'll refer to it often.

This is a wonderful book, and long overdue! Celia Ross is an experienced business librarian who also teaches ALA's Business Reference 101 online course. In this book she covers all aspects of business reference and makes it easy for even a beginner. (Just take the book to the reference desk and check the handy index any time you're stumped--no more dry mouth and brain-freeze!) Not only does she point out the best (and sometimes free) resources, she also equips you with quick strategies for company, industry, market research, financial and raw data type questions. I've been doing business reference for fifteen years myself and this book is a great refresher for anyone in the profession. It is now my go-to guide for stumpers, great free websites, and even reassurance that I haven't "missed anything." Celia Ross been there and she gets it!

Two things I like about this book are1. The book focuses heavily on standards and portability. Throughout the book, API and implementations are described according to the SUS or XSI standards. However, to book maintains a firm grasp on reality by tracking 4 real Unix-like systems, Solaris, Linux, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD throughout and noting implementation specific exceptions and extensions where applicable.2. A lot of illustrative example code is included. In some cases API functions are re-implemented to make it clear exactly how it works.APUEv2 reads quite easily as a beginner's introduction to programming in the Unix environment. However it also includes a great deal of tables, charts, and figures to make it suitable as a reference for the more experienced programmer, useful as a back-up in case the local man pages are not available.As mentioned in the foreword, readers should be comfortable with the C language itself before attempting to dive in to Unix programming.

Read this - cover to cover. This is simply the best book on UNIX out there. If you use Linux, pair this with 'The Linux Programming Interface' by Michael Kerrisk. My only gripe with this book is that they've dropped the hardcover from this edition and now it comes only in a soft-cover version. For a book like this, having a sturdy hardcover is a must because a softcover will just wear every time you pull this book out until the pages are dog-eared.

This book has it all. Threads, sockets, IPC, and everything else you need to know to access the Unix/Linux OS features when programming in C/C++.

As an advanced programming book, this book covers a lot of topics. This is book can be used as a refresher and a good purchase if you deal in Unix on a regular basis.

If you're writing unix programs, this is the book you need. It is the only book that provides a complete, coherent guide to the unix API offered by linux and other operating systems. It has really good coverage of important details that you might not normally need to care about... until you do. There are plenty of examples and the book provides great context to the often terse built in manual pages.

I have been teaching a course in advanced Unix based on this text for two years (four times) and I am very happy with it. It is thorough, clearly explaining the main features while drawing attention to possible problems and pitfalls. It is a bit hefty, but one need not cover it all in a course. I choose chapters 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 18, 14, 11, 12 and then go off to show shell scripting, which is not covered in this book.

If you are a serious Unix Systems Programmer or just learning to program on the Unix platform, this is the book you need. It is the bible of the Unix API. The 2nd edition covers all relevant topics and more. I reference mine so much it is starting to show some wear. It is a classic.

Overall, I liked the story but the ending was a little disappointing to me as a reader. I really debated over even writing a review or just keeping my opinions to myself. At almost the end of the book, the way that Spence treated Charlotte both in the bedroom and then for the years following I felt boarded on emotional abuse. I was disappointed in him because come-on, he is almost 40 years old. Even if he had never been in a serious relationship, just have some decency and respect for the person you claim to love.

For those of you who love an excellent read filled with so many real raw emotions this book touched on every aspect. And the sexual aspect… let’s just say OMG… it cannot get any better. I will not give any spoiler information because you just cannot put it into words. You have to read it, feel it and experience it for yourself. I will however tell you that I loved the connection and closeness that you feel to these characters. I felt like I was there in the moment and felt every raw emotion known to man throughout this book but I always feel that way when I read any of her books and I have read every single one of them. I could not wipe the smile off my face through most of this book. I cannot put into words how freaking fantastic this book really is. The entire “Stanton Series” and the “Men of Marks Series” are off the charts awesome perfection. If you have never read these books you are missing out and cheating yourself and when you do read them you will realize just how much TL’s writing stands out compared to most authors out there. TL Swan has such a gifted talent and brings out all the best in her writing and she just touches your soul. Thank you again TL for sharing your passion with all of us. Please keep bringing us more……. and soon.

4 1/2 Stars!Looking for an angsty read that you won't be able to put down? Mr. Spencer by T L Swan is the book for you! I wasn't sure what I was going to get with this book to be honest. The blurb drew me in, but I was seriously thinking it was just going to be a bad boy/good girl love story. Boy was I wrong! Is Spencer a playboy? Sure.. but is he so much more than that? OMG Yes! Is Charlotte a "good girl"? Also yes, but she's lived a sheltered life, and as her and Spencer get to know one another they seem to balance one another out and become the perfect match. Sure things don't go perfectly for them the first few times they meet, but once things settle down, their chemistry and feelings for one another are undeniable. I adored how both of them had reservations about what they were getting into but for different reasons, but as soon as they let go, everything became ok. Spencer is so protective and loving towards Charlotte, and even if he's naive towards relationships, he does sit perfectly. He takes such good care of her, and even when he doesn't realize it, he loves her unconditionally. Charlotte on the other hand, she loves him, but she tries to hide him. Granted, her reasons are understandable, but when push comes to shove, I wish she would have been more open and honest with everyone involved as to what was going on, I don't know if it would have changed the outcome, but I think it would have saved some drama in this book.This book was extremely angsty, hot, and it did have some laugh out loud moments as well. Spencer and Charlotte's banter is hilarious and I would find myself giggling at some of their comebacks to each other. The secondary characters in this book also for the most part are amazing. Some of them though, well.. I was not a fan of, and if you read this, you'll understand as well. Like I said, I wasn't sure what I was getting into with this book, but I'm so freaking happy I picked this one up. It was beautifully written and the story just flowed in such an amazing way. I stayed up till all hours of the night reading this book, and falling in love with these characters. I can't recommend this book enough! The only downside I have with it, is that I felt the ending was rushed. Yes it is a long book, and I'm okay with that, but the ending just felt a bit too rushed, with all the build up and everything, I just felt a little let down with everything that had happened between Spencer and Charlotte for that to have been the ending. I wanted more! Other than that, I highly suggest picking up Mr. Spencer today, trust me, you will not regret it!

Older, yes, but young enough to give Miss Lottie the run of her life! Charlotte is an inexperienced member of high society, while Mr. Spencer Jones is all too experienced! This book makes you feel all of the emotions, and even some you wish it didn’t...but in the very best ways. I LOVE everything TL Swan comes out with and this is right up with the very best. Do yourself a favor and make sure you read Mr. Masters first, but not required. It has plenty of legs to stand alone, but why wouldn’t you treat yourself to another Alpha from the same pack first?! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. Read it in under 24 hours, and that’s with a full time job and family trying to stop me! Please don’t pass this by!
