About the Author

KARA COONEY is a professor of Egyptology at UCLA. Her academic work focuses on death preparations, afterlife beliefs, and gender studies. She has participated in digs with the Metropolitan Museum of New York at the Royal Pyramid complex of Senwosret III and the Theban Necropolis with Johns Hopkins University. She appeared as a lead expert in the popular Discovery Channel special The Secrets of Egypt's Lost Queen, and is a recurring team member of the History Channel's Digging for the Truth. Her book The Woman Who Would Be King was published in 2014.

Like a bad History Channel show, this book panders to the sensationalist, tabloid mindset audience. Prof Cooney is far too fond of conspiracies within the royal court and hyping the role of the harem as sexual stimulation for the king. She constantly presents her conjectures as established facts; and while it is almost impossible to know the thoughts and mindset of people so far removed from the present, Prof Cooney repeatedly makes statements about what these ancient people thought. For example, she refers to the early Dynastic era court of Merneith as "bloodthirsty", and claims that royal males were sacrificed after the new Pharaoh was chosen - despite no concrete proof whatsoever that any of the male human sacrifices were of royal blood.It would take far too long to list all the items in this book that hit the wrong note with me - and there were quite a lot of them! - but I feel a need to mention a few of the more egregious. The reign of Hatshepsut and the Amarna Period are my own areas of special interest, and therefore rang the most false. That a ruler as evidently competent as Hatshepsut had to "buy off" the officials of the court and temple in order to remain in power is frankly insulting. And claiming that she was "lost to cultural memory" when girls of later generations were named Maatkare - her kingly throne name, NOT her personal name - overlooks the evidence to the contrary. Thutmose IV - the grandson of Thutmose III, who destroyed many of her monuments - held her in such high regard that he added his own name to an offering bowl she had dedicated where there was room, instead of removing hers, even adding the respectful title of Osiris to her name.And then there are the blatant math errors in the chapter on Nefertiti! Prof Cooney states that Akhenaten was 30 when he became king and married the teenage Nefertiti. She then claims that Tutankhamon was the son of Akhenaten by one of Nefertiti's daughters. Most of those girls were nowhere near childbearing age by the end of the reign; while the eldest could have been, there was not enough time for her to have borne a child and for that child to have been as old as Tutankhamon was when he became king.The constant emphasis on conspiracies and politicking within the court and the sexual role of the harem in each and every chapter gets old fast. Please avoid damage to your professional reputation and go back to your work on coffins, Kara.

There is so much to recommend in this book. Cooney examines the trajectories of six female pharaohs from the Old Kingdom to the Ptolmiac period: Merineth, Neferusobek, Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Tawosret, and Cleopatra, discussing the similarities of their experiences as kings and drawing parallels to wider truths and similarities of women and power - and patriarchy - today.Most of these women were "placeholders" for men - tolerated as such so long as they did not "overstep" traditional gender roles as protectors of younger (male, of course) successors - essentially playing the part of the protective mother who has no interest in actually being in power. That these women also tended to act as regents during periods of upheaval and rapid political change is, Cooney argues, also part of the reason they were permitted to wield such authority.The exceptions - Hatshepsut and Cleopatra (and, perhaps, Nefertiti) - were of particular interest, as much for how these women took and held power as for how they were (and are) remembered after their deaths. In short, Hatshepsut's monuments and name was largely erased (her name, like that of Smenkhare) removed from the king's list ostensibly because they reached too far as women. Cooney's discussion of Nefertiti - and whether she is or is not Smenkhare, and the subsequent end of the 18th dynasty - was fascinating even in its brevity. For those unfamiliar, among Egyptologists, the identity of Smenkhare specifically, and the details of how Ay and Horemheb came to power is one of tremendous controversy.The real heart of the book, however, is the connections between the ancient past and the present. This is, after all, the whole point of studying history. Cooney does a masterful job of dating parallels between these powerful women and contemporary politics. That some, such as Benazir Bhutto, have learned how to align themselves with men of the past as they stake their political claim and therefore be accepted, as contrasted with Hillary Clinton who boldly sought to break away from the patriarchal power structure when she proclaimed, "... I challenge assumptions about women. I do make some people uncomfortable, which I'm well aware of, but that's just part of coming to grips with what I believe is still one of the most important pieces of unfinished business in human history - empowering women to stand up for themselves." That we in the early 21st century are seeing women in increasing numbers challenge traditional power structures in the workplace, in the military and in politics is both reason for celebration and, given the lessons of history, reason for concern, as power does not easily or readily concede.Come readers may take issue with the strong connections Cooney makes about women and power and the strong, bright lines that connect attitudes across time around the issue. I found her evidence compelling, her reasoning unassailable, and her writing clear. I very much enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

Let's hear it for escapism! Not everything I read and enjoy has to be "literature", sometimes I need to follow a long literary tome with something frivolous and deliciously fun. "The Last Mrs. Parrish", by two sisters who write under the name, Liv Constantine, is exactly the transition novel I needed this week (it will make an excellent travel/holiday novel and eventually a film)!"The Last Mrs. Parrish", is what I like to call "Wealth Porn". Part of its appeal derives from the meticulously detailed descriptions of the lives and luxuries of the Very Very Wealthy: private jets, opulent homes, designer clothes/shoes/handbags/lingerie, jewelry, et. Now, this might not appeal to every reader, but I'm happy with my Never-in-Business-Class lot in life, so I'm not crushed with envy, instead it's fun to imagine how the other 1% lives while eating my home-made lunch at my desk. Throw in a suspenseful and just-complicated-enough plot, plus a dash of twists, and I'm having a grand ole time.Amber Patterson is a completely amoral young woman who has designed a detailed and diabolical plan to acquire wealthy entrepreneur, Jackson Parrish, via a fake-friendship with his wife, Daphne. You don't really need to know more than that! Who need Major Themes, Symbolism, and Life Lessons? Is the villain TOO villainous? Yep. Will you anticipate some of the twists? Sure! So what?! Just jump in and enjoy!

****SPOILERS AHEAD****I can honestly say I didn't like The Last Mrs. Parrish, not one bit. I'm disappointed. It was on Reese's Book Club, and had raving reviews. But, I honestly can't say it had many redeeming qualities. My review can't be done without some spoilers. Please do NOT read this if you do not want to know what the twist of this book is.I liked the idea of Amber; I thought she was cunning, manipulative, and deliciously evil. That is, until she called guacamole "green goo" and said she hated avocados. I mean, what kind of person...anyway. The thing that bothered me is that the author's didn't let Amber be all the way evil. She would do something horrible, unforgivable, and then admit she felt a "little guilty", and justify her behavior. In my opinion, if you're going to make a evil character, especially if you are taking the readers along by that character's perspective, really go for it.Then, the "twist" was awfully predictable. Maybe because I had just read The Wife Between Us, which had a similar story line, but was executed much better, in my opinion. The tagline of The Last Mrs. Parrish is "Some women get everything. Some women get everything they deserve." Amber was a horrible person, yes. But, Daphne ended up taking the cake in my opinion. Amber went after her husband, lied about who she was, tricked her, deceived her. But, Daphne found out, and tricked Amber right back into seducing her abusive husband away from her. Please, explain to me how a woman could ever deserve a life filled with domestic abuse? I don't care how evil Amber is, she did not deserve to be married to a man as horrible as Jackson. To have the entire tagline of your book rely on the fact that a women deserves to be emotionally and physically abused the rest of her life just doesn't sit well with me. Women are supposed to lift each other up and stick together. Amber broke that, yes, but Daphne destroyed it as well.I rated it more than one star because the writing was really good. I find it absolutely amazing that Liv Constantine is the pen name for two sisters that don't even live in the same state! I'm conflicted about this thriller. There were times I felt like I was barely reading a three star book and other times it almost reached a five. I decided to meet in the middle and settled on four stars. I'm still not sure that was the correct choice...SUMMARYThe story, initially told from Amber's point of view, opens with Amber orchestrating an "accidental" meeting at the gym between herself and Daphne Parish. Daphne is the wife of Jackson Parrish, one of the most wealthy, influential (not to mention good-looking) men in a Connecticut town full of wealthy, influential people.Daphne seems to have to perfect life; a handsome, very rich husband, two adorable girls and one of the most beautiful homes in town full of beautiful homes. The only downside seems to be that she desperately misses her sister who died from CF (Cystic Fibrosis) almost twenty years earlier. Aside from her husband and children, Daphne's passion is the not-for-profit, Julie's Smile, she started in her sisters honor.Because she is a girl who does her homework, Amber knows to use a feigned CF connection to insinuate herself into Daphne's life. It works like a charm. Soon the two women become fast friends, bonding over the loss of their beloved sisters - pretend loss on Ambers part.It becomes clear early on that Amber's end goal is to steal Jackson from Daphne, becoming the next Mrs. Parrish. It seems she will go to any lengths to get what she wants.Part two is told from Daphne's point of view, and that's where the book gets interesting. Is there more to the story than there appears to be? Is Daphne more than an over privileged housewife with a staff of household help and a charmed life? Author, Liv Constantine (actually co-authoring sisters, Valerie and Lynne Constantine), slowly reveals the story behind the story and it's quite a tale!!!WHAT I LOVEDInitially, I thought I was reading kind of a flat 'been there, done that' recycled plot. Not a bad one, but not very unique. I kept going because this book received positive reviews from some of my GR friends so I knew it had to be good. Glad I did!! Although there were a few clues dropped during Amber's narrative, letting the reader know there would be more to the story, the plot really picked up once Daphne's account began. I love that the story is told by two different characters. It was so much fun to hear what each was thinking about various events.The main twist, which was revealed about halfway through the book, was AWESOME! I LOVED it so much!!! It was one of those five star moments.I loved the parts of the book including Daphne and Jackson's girls, Bella and Tallulah. Bella brought some honest kid moments, expressing her opinion without a filter. It was amusing.At first I didn't like Daphne as a character, but she grew on me and by the end I loved her!!There was a lot more to love, but those are the highlights.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVESome parts were a bit predictable. I wasn't super impressed with some of the things Jackson did and said, he seemed like many male characters in books I've read before.Most of the characters were pretty black and white. The 'good' characters were very good, probably wearing halo's but the bad characters were pretty irredeemable. This is absolutely, hands down the best book for the beginner mini-cake and cupcake designer looking to wow their friends at family functions, picnics, birthday parties and office functions. I've always been envious of cake covered in fondant - but thought I'd either have to spend an arm and a leg to purchase custom cakes and cupcakes or spend hours upon hours in professional classes to learn how to sculpt and cover my own cakes in fondant. As a kid growing up in the 1980s, I greeted every morning with my BFFs (that’s Breakfast Friends Forever): Cap’N Crunch, Count Chocula, and the Cookie Crook, literally pouring chocolate chip cookies into a bowl. By the time I was 14, I had a belly the size of my dad’s, carrying 212 pounds on my 6-foot frame.I wasn’t alone.The adult obesity rate has more than doubled since the 1980s, growing from 15 percent to 35 percent in the mid-2000s. It’s now at 35.7 percent—yes, more than one-third of Americans are considered obese, according to the National Institutes of Health. Obesity shortened my father’s life, and for most of my childhood I struggled with that extra 25 pounds as well. Great recipe book for sticking to the Zero Belly plan. I have one cookbook for Zero Belly and thought this would be a great companion. This cookbook contains a lot of great recipes for not only breakfast, but what you could use for lunch as well, if needed. Easy to follow with 'tips' as in the other cookbook about changing your way of eating. Highly recommended!

Best deal for the money, and I know it works. A friend lost 10 pounds in one week on Zero Belly and these breakfast recipes helped her do it. I made the overnight oats, the smoothies, and five of the egg dishes, and all took minutes to make and were delicious. So far I've lost three pounds and I'm not stopping. I think I know why: they all have lean proteins, healthy fats and low calories.Perfect way to start the day!

I am not much of a cook and when I do cook I like simple and easy. Some of these recipes are simple and easy but I felt a majority of them would take me too long to cook before work. I would have to get up an extra 30-45 minutes to cook some of these recipes but that is me. This may not hold true for some of you. Looks like it has some good recipes but feel like I bought into more of the hype than anything else. BUT this could be a problem with me and not the recipes in this book. It just doesn't work for me as I had hoped it would only due to the fact it doesn't fit into my morning routine.

What i like best about this book is the variety. It's got all kinds of recipes, from eggs to healthy pancakes to smoothies to homemade granola. Whatever kind of breakfast you eat, you'll find something.

It was a quick read and learned that you can eat what you want, but it is the time that you eat it that may or may not be bad for you.

Was not thrilled with the recipes. Didn't really tell me a lot that I didn't already know. Some of the foods they recommend are not what IO consider breakfast foods.

I loved this book and was following but had to stop as it triggered my reflux badly ( all ode fruit smoothies!) ... I did lose a few pounds though and continue to make some of the recipes such as the pancakes -- with berry sauce ( blueberries)..... LOVE some of the recipes and if you don't suffer from reflux buy this book!

Great recipes and some really good research. I like the explanations of how to eat specifically for weight loss without compromising calorie intake.The breakfasts are easy... easy to make, easy to shop for, and easy to eat! Delicious. I am glad I bought this book and I recommend it.

I got the Kindle version, there were no graphics, no pictures no illustrations. I don't know if that's because it was on the Kindle or not but certain things work better with pictures or illustrations. For example, the differences between certain breeds, how to trim the nails, etc. So that's 1 star gone right there. There was absolutely no information in this book that could not have been gotten for free at any of the Guinea Pig websites. 2 stars gone for that. It's really only a VERY basic introduction suitable for someone who doesn't have access to the internet and/or has never owned a guinea pig before. Another star gone.I gave 1 star because it was cheap and had a kindle addition available. It took me about a half hour to read the entire thing and then I deleted it because there was no information in it that made it worth holding on to.

We've had our guinea pig for 4 months now & it's been a nightmare! I ask myself daily "why are you hand scooping piggie poop"Then... the little fella gives me nose kisses & I melt.Had I known the joy and reward given in caring for one of these little creatures, I'd have adopted one years ago.Guinea pigs take A LOT OF HARD WORK. Sadly, most just see a cute face in a pet store & take it home with NO knowledge of what care is needed. This book was a quick read & a life saver. So many good notes and info that guinea owners should read BEFORE they bring one home.

This is an EXCELLENT book: thorough, detailed, and accurate. You'll find information most books don't provide, including wise warnings (do NOT buy an exercise wheel for a guinea pig), and good tips for training your guinea pig, which makes life with a guinea pig much more fun! The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has no pictures. Pictures are less important than excellent information, but still, we (buyers of pet books) love to look at them. :-)

This book is filled with great information about guinea pigs, but it has one drawback -- no pictures or illustrations of any kind. As I bought the book for school, and the guinea pig is a class pet, I'm especially disappointed that the book includes exclusively text.

Helped me understand a lot and helped me know what to do in certain situations

It has been probably 15 years since I last owned guinea pigs and so I wanted a book to read as a refresher for me but also lots of good information for my 8 year old son who is just now learning about them. My 4 year old daughter might be interested in some of the information too however there are no pictures like most of the other reviewers state so I went ahead and ordered another book more geared towards her. This book was a great read and though there were a few repetitive parts, it was overall lots of useful information. We will be getting our 2 new guinea pig babies in just over a week when they are ready to leave mom and I am so excited to be able to teach them tricks. I did not even know you could teach them tricks!

I purchased this book to read with my 5 and 3 year old. It is not kid friendly reading and there are no pictures to interact little ones. If you are looking for a brief informational text as a reference for guinea pig breeds and care, this text is fine. Other than that, I found all this info easier in a previous google search.

Does not go too deep. Just the part of "how to train the guinea pigs" impressed me.

Written well, covers just the basics. Author did the research and gave many different meanings for some tattoo's. If you're brand new to tattooing then this book will help you understand meanings of the basics.

this book was a gift to a new tattoo artist...he had just completed his apprenticeship and I thought this would be a good book for his library at the shop. He loved it!

This could have been great. The printing was terribly sub-par. Hopefully the guys from Kiss will publish their own coloring book. It would be a quality product. I'm surprised that they haven't already, to tell you the truth.

You can't color this at all! Wast of money

This coloring book was a big disappointment!!..ordered this for grandson..embarrassed to give it to him. The book is small but worse is the picture quality!!..the pics r so faded u can hardly make out what they r. Should of read reviews before i ordered..do not purchase..not worth $10..mayb $1...if that!!!!
