This book had all the promise of being interesting and revealing - New Guinea and Papua New Guinea and a white man's initiation into local culture. However, it went awry and somehow got lost in the jungle. I feel like the author did not really let us in on what he actually felt. The author wanted to respect the secrecy of his experience, but still misses sharing with us some simple things. He is given crocodile scales, but never tells us exactly where, how many, how they felt to the touch (when he was eventually allowed to touch them) and whether he was proud or not of his scales in the years following. I was also confused as to what the author expected from his experience. He keeps indicating that he wants a spiritual experience, but feels let down when he does not encounter real "magic". On the whole, I felt disappointed when I reached the end of the book, because I could not clearly tell what the author got out of his adventure.

I must say that I would be very interested in how the author views this experience from his perspective in 2011. Although he is not the only explorer to go through tribal initiation rituals, the ritual of scarfication he submitted to seems quite extreme for even the best of them! Returning to England with a raised pattern on his skin resembling that of a crocodile must have shocked more than a few people!Having read several of his books, I admire his approach to adventure, relying on his ability to enlist the aid of people he meets along the way. His comfort zone is very large, and his openness no doubt appeals to the indigenous populations. He does not present himself as a larger-than-life character, nor does he adopt a macho facade. He is a human among other humans, which is precisely why I enjoy traveling with him.

With little preparation and information, the author flies into West Papua where he first treks from mission to mission in 10 days among the Yali and Kim Yal people of the eastern highlands.Then he makes a more adventurous trek in the southern foothils to visit the remote Obini people. However with lack of understanding of their culture and no means to communicate with them he gets chased away after 4 days.Disappointed, he gives up on West Papua and flies back to more civilized Papua New Guinea, where he manages to take part in a traditional initiation ceremony along the Sepik River.

I'm not sure where Robert Barkin got the idea that this was the third in Holland's The War in the West Series, as there is nothing in the title to suggest that. This is a rather lightweight, but excellent treatment of the Battle of the Atlantic.While lacking in a lot of details (consistent with the Ladybird series), what this book does include his Holland's analysis of the OPERATIONAL level of the battle. This makes the work well worth a read.

This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.It comes recommended by this reviewer. Enjoy and may the Vishanti watch over you!

I'm a huge Dr. Strange fan. I'm about ½ way through this book and I have found it very informative - there are many storylines which I have missed and now i have to track them down. Great illustrations, nice format, high quality. You will like this as much as you like Dr. Strange.

Otherwise you are going to be tempted to traverse the legal jungle on your own. Sort of like a non-medical person trying to take out their own appendix. Don't do it!! Hire a lawyer and sleep well at night.

This is a compilation of topics by a large number of health care lawyers. Each section is "peer reviewed" by another attorney for accuracy. Definitely not a "How To Do it Yourself" book. In fact this is the chief message of the book: doctors tend to be overconfident of our skill, and health care law is a complex field in which even general practice attorneys often stumble. Just as we should not operate on ourselves, we should not assume expertise in corporate organization, asset protection, labor or contracting.I found this book to be an excellent reference. Pricey, but the advice (and listing of names and office location of good attorneys in the field) might save you untold amounts of money by avoiding "The Biggest Legal Mistakes Physicians Make"

This book contains many topics important to physicians. However the substance for each topic is minimal. It does give some helpful tips for dealing with each topic it covers, but will certainly not be good as a sole reference on any of the topics. The question and answer format is difficult for me to follow. I would recommend getting books specific to the topics you need, as you would likely get more for your money.

This Diary is an excellent introduction to the life and thought of Kierkegaard. Selections are made from Kierkegaard's ten- thousand page diary and placed in a rough chronological order. Interpersed are separate sections devoted to his Writing his view of Christianity and Christendom. Kierkegaard in the great share of his books used indirect methods of communication, in part because he did not want to preach to the reader. He rather wanted the reader to by thinking for himself come to the right conclusion.In his diaries Kierkegaard was able to express his feelings and opinions more directly. He also in them wrote down his major ideas and worked them out. The Journals are the great mine from which he takes the materials for the books.This Diary opens with a section on his Moods in Life. It has sections on his Childhood and his relation to his Father, on his reading of Paul Moller. The Corsair Affair also has a section of its own. The great turning point of Kierkegaard's life was his breaking of his engagement with Regine Olsen,of which he later said "Had I had faith I would have married Regine'. Its relation to his 'thorn in the flesh' is one of the most speculated upon questions in regard to a philosopher's life.Kierkegaard was not only a writer of immense spiritual depth but also one of great irony and hidden humor.These Diaries do give a sense of the real Kierkegaard.They are accompanied by excellent explanatory notes.

Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author, who was the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote many other books, including Philosophical Fragments,Fear & Trembling; The Sickness Unto Death,Concluding Unscientific Postscript,Attack upon Christendom,The Concept of Irony,The Concept of Dread,Training in Christianity,Christian Discourses,Either/Or, etc.He wrote in 1837, "Each person takes his revenge on the world. Mine consists in carrying my grief and anguish deeply embedded within myself, while my laughter entertains all. If I see somebody suffer I sympathize with him, console him to the best of my ability, and listen to him quietly when he assures me that I am fortunate. If I can keep this up to the day of my death I shall have had my revenge." (#15, Pg. 17-18)He observes sardonically, "In former days a man derived self-importance by being born noble, rich, etc.; today we have grown more liberal, more `world-historical,' now all of us derive self-importance from being born in the 19th century---Oh, Thou marvelous 19th century! Oh, enviable lot!" (#23, pg. 20-21)He points out, "It is an awful satire, and an epigram on the materialism of our modern age, that nowadays the only use that can be made of solitude is imposing it as a penalty, as jail. What a difference there is between those times when, no matter how secular materialism always was, man believed in the solitude of the convent, when, in other words, solitude was revered as the highest, as the destiny of Eternity---and the present when it is detested as a curse and is used only for the punishment of criminals. Alas, what a change." (#27, pg. 23)He reveals, "Torn to pieces as I was inside, without any prospect of leading a humanly happy life here below... without any hope of a happy, cosy future---as most naturally results from and rests in the historical continuity of domestic family-life---what wonder that in despairing desperation I seized upon the intellectual side of man only and clung to it so closely that the thought of my considerable mental talents was my only consolation, ideas my only joy, human beings objects of indifference." (#39, pg. 31)He contends, "If Hegel had written his entire Logic and said in the Preface that it was merely an idea-experiment for the sake of argument, wherein even in many places he had shirked something, he might well have been the greatest thinker that ever lived. As it is, he is comical." (#99, pg. 89)He states, "If by means of research in the natural sciences something could be found that would help to define the concept of mind and spirit, I would be the first to acquire a microscope, and I hope I should be as persevering as anyone. However, as I easily perceive by qualitative dialectic that... the world will not have advanced another step in 100,000 years, I will do precisely the opposite: preserve my soul and not waste one second of my life on curiosity." (#116, pg. 96)He explains, "I am accused of causing young people to acquiesce in subjectivity. Maybe, for a moment. But how would it be possible to eliminate all the phantoms of objectivity that act as an audience, etc., except by stressing the category of the separate individual. Under the pretext of objectivity the aim has been to sacrifice individualities entirely. That is the crux of the matter." (#121, pg. 101-102)He argues, "Actually, a Reformation for the purpose of abolishing the Bible now would have a good deal more validity than Luther's abolition of the Pope. This thing about the Bible has developed religiosity in scholarly and legalistic circles, but merely as entertainment. A sort of `learning' in that field has gradually seeped down to the very lowest class, and no one any longer reads the Bible merely as an individual human being. But this way of reading it causes irreparable harm; it then comes to be a stronghold for apologies and evasions etc. in relation to LIVING, for there is constantly some reference one must look up, and always this sham that one must make sure the doctrine is in perfect shape before one can begin to live in accordance with it---which means that one never gets around to it. The Bible Societies, this insipid caricature of the Missions, a company which, just like any other business-company, works with money ... in just as worldly a way as other enterprises their wares: the Bible Societies have done irreparable harm." (#135, pg. 110-111)He suggests, "Oh Socrates, Thou Noble Sage! Amid the crowd, surrounded by these thousands upon thousands, thou workest to split up `the herd' and seek out `the individual' that represents man's spiritual destiny. And Bernard [of Clairvaux] was a Christian, and it was in Christendom that it happened---and Socrates was a pagan---and yet there is more Christianity in the Socratic method than in the method of Saint Bernard." (#161, pg. 127)He confesses, "It is true that I believe in forgiveness for our sins, but I understand it in this way: that I must bear my penalty as heretofore, which means that I must remain in the painful prison of my reserve to the end of my days, remote, in a deeper sense, from community with others---yet feeling my penalty attenuated by the thought that God has forgiven me. I cannot, at least not yet, rise so high in faith... that I can eliminate this painful memory by faith. By clinging to faith I ward off despair, bear the pain and penalty of my reserve---and am so indescribably happy or blissful in that activity of mind and spirit which God so plentifully and mercifully has vouchsafed me. (#167, pg. 132-133)He laments, "My task is new in this sense that in the 1800th year of Christianity there is literally no one from whom I can learn how to go about it." (#179, pg. 147)He asserts, "There is only one proof of the truth of Christianity: the inner proof... In the Epistle of St. John (1, 5, 9) this is hinted... It is not the reasons that motivate belief in the Son of God, but the other way round, belief in the Son of God constitutes the evidence." (#201, pg.164-165) He adds, "A dogmatic system should not be built on the basis of understanding faith, but on the basis of understanding that one cannot understand faith." (#202, pg. 165)He proposes, "No, I would be tempted to make Christianity another proposition: Let us gather in every single copy of the New Testament, let us cart the whole collection out to an open place, or up a mountain top, and then, while all of us kneel down, let someone speak to God, saying: Take it back, this book; we humans, the way we are, should not get involved with such a book; it only makes us unhappy. Now, I suggest that... we ask Christ to take another road. That would be talking honestly and humanly---something else than this disgusting, hypocritical parson's twaddle about life being of no value to us without the invaluable boon of Christianity." (#216, pg. 177)He adds, "Thus with the worship of God in Christianity. Man too has wings; he has imagination. It is meant to help him really to soar---but all we do is play, we let imagination entertain us in a quiet hour, in a Sunday reverie, and for the rest we stay as we were; then on Monday we regard it as God's grace that we grow plump, fat, tasty and put on an extra layer of yellow fat, save money, acquire prestige in the world, beget many children and are successful---all this we regard as proof of God's grace. But those who really get involved with God... suffer and look worried, have trouble, toil and affliction---of those we say: There, it is quite obvious that they don't enjoy the grace of God." (#217, pg. 178-179)He concludes, "Christianity can be communicated only by witnesses, i.e. by men who existentially express what they proclaim, realize it in their lives." (#219, pg. 180)This is a fascinating collection of excerpts from Kierkegaard's diaries, that will be "must reading" for anyone seriously studying Kierkegaard.

Well it isn't really a diary. It's more like reading his philosophy, but more intimate. Even though I like his philosophy, I preferred this the most. This is a nice pleasant read for outdoor lovers, even if you are a poor fisherman as myself. Someone tried to compare him to Mark Twain!Not in a million years is Gierach any where close to Twain. He's not even a fraction of Patrick F. McManus (whom I highly recommend).Mcmanus is fiction stories... but great reading for outdoor lovers of fishing, hunting etc. and he is marvelously funny as heck!

This book is a great installment in the Gierach franchise. It offers humor, imagery, and insight into fine living. This is a noticeable accomplishment for the author because when he offers these insights they often turn preachy. This is not present in this book, with the result being that the book is far more enjoyable to those that may not share the same outlook on the environment as the author. Still, in spite of that, this is one of his best. Get it and enjoy!!!!

John Gierach.If You think You can't go fishing o do not have time ,follow Johns only one role : if You gonna go fishing JUST GO FISHING !!!

The stories in each chapter held my interest and are entertaining; Gierach's writing is always colorful, will often cause a smile and will make you feel as though you are along with him on his adventures. I was a little disappointed in content because I anticipated more about "dances with trout" rather than so much of the adventures leading up to the "dances".

John Gierach provides a nice balance of humor, technical information and fly fishing experiences. What more can I say? Great!

You don't have to be a fly fisherman to enjoy Gierach, though it does help. When he waxes ecstatic over bamboo rods, or explains how the Green Drake mayfly (Ephemerella grandis) is differentiated from its cousins, E. doddsi and E. flavilinea, perhaps only a fisherman can understand exactly why this is so important.But reading Gierach isn't something you do to learn about the technique or the science of fishing, or how to select a rod, or how to cast. He's more about the philosophy of fishing, about why we are willing to stand in the middle of a cold stream wearing silly clothes and waving a stick over our heads. He's the ultimate Trout Bum, to quote an earlier book, a man for whom there really is no other life, and who has made a modest living for years just celebrating this life. And of course he does this in a wonderfully witty way; no jokes, just a lot of observations that will still make you smile the umpteenth time you read them."Dances with Trout" is not just about trout fishing, or about fishing, for that matter. The "Scotland" chapter doesn't have much to say about how to fish for salmon; "Fool Hen" is about grouse hunting, and "In the Woods" is about still hunting for deer.What ties all these stories together is Gierach's feeling of comradery with his hunting and fishing pals, and even more so, a real connection with the outdoors. In a time when for many, "outdoor sports" means something like racing through the woods in a snowmobile, tearing up the peace and quiet of a lake in a jetski or "four wheeling", Gierach writes about the simple pleasures of being outdoors and absorbing the world around you.

Gierach has a way of lulling the reader into a world of strange illusion. I keep forgetting I'm reading and start thinking I'm eaves-dropping at a campfire. The rhythm of a writer is important and can fan the flame of imagination or dowse it like cold beer on your last match. Dances fans, man...it fans! The stories within the covers are told like stories should be told...easy with lot's of real words. There's too many writers,today,who write like evil spawn of New Age English classes! John bucks 'em all and writes like a story teller...taunting us with worlds filled exotic adventures...like killing porcupines with rocks. Good stuff!

I'm an avid bass angler who has never done much flyfishing, but after reading a good Gierach,(they're all great,) I'm ready to head out to that little creek in Montana, or that bass pond in Texas, or even Scotland with a fly rod and join him. This was the first book of his I read and now I'm on my fourth. I love how relaxed and fun his writing is, and I, personally, can relate to a lot of his views and feelings about things. Even for the non-angler, John Gierach is alot of fun, even if you have no idea what the heck a #14 Royal Wulff is. If you're looking for some great reading, go with Gierach.

The CD is as important as the book, and I wouldn't buy it without the CD. Having said that, the price difference of the book vs. book+CD is ridiculous.

My teacher recommended this book. She likes teaching this method and I have found it practical to use. I have three books in the series and use the CD to practice with that is provided with the book.

We play the CD in the car and I think it helps my daughter with her pitch. The CD has a simple piano accompaniment - doesn't overwhelm the cello part.

About the Author

  Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.   Nancy Graviett is a professor in the Business and Computer Science department at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri, where she is the program coordinator for the Business Administrative Systems program and teaches within the program. Nancy is also very active with distance learning and teaches in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. She holds a master’s degree from University of Missouri. Nancy holds Microsoft Certified Application Specialist certification in multiple applications and provides training both on and off campus. In her free time, Nancy enjoys quilting and spending time with family and friends.   Debra Geoghan is currently an associate professor of computer and information science at Bucks County Community College, teaching computer classes ranging from basic computer literacy to cybercrime, computer forensics, and networking. She has earned certifications from Microsoft, CompTIA, Apple, and others. Deb has taught at the college level since 1996 and also spent 11 years in the high school classroom. This book is very detailed and my teacher enjoys it more than other editions! Although the spiral paperback seems too flimsy and is difficult to turn pages. The paper seems very then compared with other books!

Very good book if you want to be an excel pro!

Great book I just wish it had a video to go with it for people who are visual learners like myself. If you don’t know anything about excel I would recommend a different book because it does necessarily teach you the basics.
