Really enjoyed this book, I think it's my favorite Lauren K Denton read so far! She has great character development with the right combo of love, loss, growth and change. The story follows three generations of women–a mom, her teenage daughter, and her mother. She tells the story from each women's point of view, which I love. Her descriptions had me picturing the exact location of Jessie's shop, Sumner's home on the water and the entirety of Glory Road. I connected easily to the story and loved every page. This would be the PERFECT spring break or summer read, you won't be disappointed....except maybe when you've finished and have to move on to read something else!! ;)

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced copy of Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton.I have read both The Hideaway and Hurricane Season by Lauren K. Denton and she's quickly become one of my favorite authors when it comes to women's southern fiction. I absolutely adored both previous books and had a hunch Glory Road would become a favorite of mine as well. This book felt a little different from The Hideaway and Hurricane Season, but in very good ways.Glory Road follows Jessie, Evan (Jessie's fourteen year old daughter), and Gus (Jessie's mother). Jessie and Evan had moved back to her hometown of Perry, Alabama, several years ago after her marriage crumbled.Jessie opened her gardening shop, Twig, and finally feels like herself after years of struggling to be someone she was not. She's closed off her heart to love after her divorce, but this summer might prove to be one that will open her heart back up. A close high school friend, Ben, reenters her life and then she meets Sumner when he casually walks into her gardening shop one day.Evan is entering into the summer before her freshman year in high school begins and helps in her Mom's shop frequently. She is determined to hold onto her unique personality and not to be changed by the world around her. This summer opens up a world of possibility for Evan, and she's determined to make the most of it.Gus is a stubborn, witty homemaker, always cooking up something in the kitchen. She's a widow, living next door to her daughter and granddaughter. She is not afraid to share her opinion and is always trying to steer Jessie towards love again. This book is sweet, full of summertime nostalgia and glimpses of the south. I enjoyed the way the book was narrated - it was so well-written and magical. I loved seeing both the similarities and differences in three generations of women throughout the story. The characters were so raw and intentional - Jessie's struggle as she worked through her emotions from her past and the love that she could experience now, Evan's discovery of who she is and how she always turns back to family. I really connected with her and saw pieces of my fourteen-year-old self in her. And then there's Gus. Oh, Gus. She had to be my favorite character. Her stubbornness and humor had me laughing out loud! She is determined and reminded me so much of my own grandmother.Glory Road was such a beautiful story. The descriptions were spot on and had me visualizing everything from that red dirt road, to the rain drops falling during Jessie's evening runs. The small details were incredible as well - before each chapter began, there were quotes from gardening books. This was such a lovely addition and some quotes were so fascinating! I learned a lot about gardening from this book and it made me want to start planting one.Sumner's and Ben's interactions with Jessie were believable and well-written - the struggle in Jessie's emotions and how her backstory is revealed throughout the story and not simply spelled out in the beginning was such a great writing choice. The way Lauren draws out her characters in such a personal way makes all of them seem so real. Gus had me laughing, Evan had me reminiscing, and Jessie had me feeling: peace, sadness, heartbreak, fear, love. This is such a heartfelt read and definitely worth it to pick up!!

Lauren’s books are the kind you want to finish in one sitting. Her first book, The Hideaway, was my favorite book last year and I quickly picked up her second book, The Hurricane, and devoured that one too. This book was the perfect mix of family and romance. Her stories and characters stick with you long after you finish the book. She’s quickly become one of my very favorite authors and I can’t wait to read her future books!

I gave Glory Road 5 stars because it's a beautiful story about family, love, new beginnings and sad endings sometimes. That's the way life goes. I love the setting, the characters and the plot. I highly recommend Lauren K. Denton as a fine writer any girl or woman would enjoy reading.

I always enjoy books by southern authors since I grew up in the South. Lauren Fenton wrote of three women in a family. I loved that each of the women had a voice which made for a richer story line. It was a wonderfully written book. Loved it!

Laughed and cried,, learned things about plants and flowers and also about myself. No one has reached my soul like Laura since Fannie Flagg.

Couldnt wait until her next book came out!! I read Glory Road in about 8 hours, loved it! Now Ill anxiously await the next one.

Mom really enjoyed this book. This was the first Lauren Denton book mom has read. I get all these romance and christian novels for her. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Lauren Denton novels.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you.I figure you need to know if someone enjoyed reading the book or if it was poorly done. This one was an enjoyable read. She will telling the other ladies in the Beauty Shop Book Group about Lauren Denton.

Review

wNo one elected anyone to fundamentally transform American society and yet it's happened, at the speed of light. How did the radical left pull it off? More importantly: How do Americans get their freedom back? Daniel Horowitz is one of the sharpest writers and thinkers in the conservative movement and Stolen Sovereignty is another notch in his belt. It's required reading for anyone devoted to liberty. --Brent Bozell, founder and president of the Media Research CenterStolen Sovereignty is a brilliant and much needed call to arms. Easily one of the most important books of our new century, it is a must-read for every American. Stolen Sovereignty reminds us once more that not only is freedom never free, but that it must zealously guarded by a grateful, informed, and invested citizenry. Daniel E. Horowitz is an outstanding writer who masterfully breaks down the issues and presents an overwhelming case for liberty. --Brad Thor, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Foreign AgentStolen Sovereignty is a wake-up call for every activist who has wondered why conservative electoral victories rarely translate into real world change. We are being ruled, not governed, and this book explains in detail how it is happening. --Dan Bongino, former Secret Service agent and author of Life Inside the Bubble

Horowitz does a great job identifying a problem which has been largely ignored. This is that an unelected Supreme Court has become a super legislature dictating social policy in America. It does this by giving itself the power to override any law it doesn't like enacted by elected representatives in Congress, the elected legislatures of the states, or the voters themselves. It has thus disenfranchised these three entities. As a result, we have "social transformation without representation." America is now a country primarily ruled by courts and government bureaucrats. This is why so many people feel that elections don't matter. The Supreme Court has particularly violated the sovereignty of the states which created the United States to protect their rights. The 10th Amendment to the Constitution explicitly protects the right of states to manage their own affairs but the court has ignored it. A recent example is the court forcing its definition of marriage onto all states. This problem has arisen because the founders never imagined that the Supreme Court would turn itself into a super legislature and thus provided no safeguards against that. The result is that we have an unelected Supreme Court with no real checks or balances. Hamilton thought it would be "the least dangerous branch." Madison thought that under the Constitution the "legislative branch predominates." When the Supreme Court began exploiting this hole in the Constitution, Jefferson stated it was becoming a "despotic branch." The result is today's "social transformation without representation."The Supreme Court has now gone further in violating the states' sovereignty by preventing them from protecting themselves from the invasion of illegal aliens. The Constitution guarantees states a "republican form of government." There is no republican form of government when the court can override the acts of elected state officials. The Constitution also guarantees the federal government will protect states "against invasion." There is no such protection when the court aids the influx of illegal aliens. Currently the federal courts are further disenfranchising the citizenry by voiding voter ID laws, thus allowing illegals to vote. We have de facto open borders by judicial fiat.Horowitz proposes a practical solution under Article IV of the Constitution. This article gave Congress authority to establish federal courts below the Supreme Court and it has done so by establishing the federal appellate courts. But most of the ammunition the Supreme Court is using to disenfranchise America is coming from appealed rulings from these courts. Congress should use its power to either abolish some of these courts or to at least to define their legal power. Congress can do this, for example, by passing a law and providing that it is not subject to federal appellate jurisdiction. Under the Constitution the Supreme Court has original jusrizdiction in only a few limited areas. It relies on appeals from the appellate courts to legislate social engineering. But this solution requires Congress to act and it can take a long time for Congress to do anything substantial as it is reluctant to change the status quo. I see no problem with the states declaring which federal rulings the states will follow. First, the states should have ultimate power since they created the United States and not the other way around. Second, the Supreme Court has simply given itself the power to overrule the states so the states can respond likewise as they are ultimately the main constitutional power.

Stolen Sovereignty is a book that's long overdue. In a perfect world, this book would be mandatory reading in high school civics. Our government has strayed so incredibly far from our founding and we are near if not over the tipping point rendering our beloved constitution a meaningless relic. Daniel Horowitz is one of the best young minds in the conservative movement, and proposes several workable solutions to return this once great land back to the principles we were founded on. On the issue of the illegal alien invasion and the federal government's responsibility to protect national and state borders, Daniel states pretty much what I've been saying for years, "the federal government must guarantee that protection, and if they fail to do so, it is a violation of the underpinnings of the agreement to join the union." The government's first and foremost duty is to protect the nation from invasion and they are failing miserably. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Surprisingly, I have found reading bombastic attacks on the Supreme Court to often raise very important issues worthy of serious consideration. I found this initially in reviewing Mark Levin's "Men in Black" several years ago. It is also certainly true about this book, which carries an intro by Levin. The author writes for "Conservative Review", also edited recently by Levin. While I have some basic fundamental differences with the author, nonetheless his book is of very high quality and reflects a tremendous amount of research and analysis. It consists in my opinion of four interconnected sections.First, the author sketches some background information on the Supreme Court which, as Hamilton noted, was to have neither "force nor will." In short, the Court has developed into a much more powerful institution than intended. The other negative force the author identifies is the "unrepresentative bureaucracy," though he reserves most of his fire for the federal courts. The author is no fan of the "living constitution" school of interpretation, and specifically rejects the theory that the passage of the 14th Amendment somehow enhanced the power and authority of the Court. In the combustible second section, chapters 2-4, the author discusses some of the familiar conservative condemnation list of recent Court decisions. Individual chapters are devoted to: Obamacare, religious liberty (including gay marriage), and immigration decisions. While the author is unsparing in his fiery condemnation of these decisions, the result is a useful perspective on some of the very decisions that he believes illustrate the growth of unrestrained judicial power and the dangers the unelected Court presents to a democratic system. While I certainly would dispute some of his contentions, overall folks like me benefit enormously from hearing and considering the author's forceful arguments. It is a very healthy situation to have one's deeply held values so skillfully challenged by the author, such that reconsideration is merited. This is how one learns. The third section (chapters 5-8) presents a surprisingly extensive discussion of immigration issues which I had not anticipated. Beyond question, the author must be one of the most extensively informed individuals writing today on this topic. As evidenced by the extensive notes, he has researched massively and effectively to find material to enrich his discussion. Many of his points were entirely unfamiliar to me. I think this is one of the major contributions of the book, to present and discuss these important points in an effective and cogent fashion. Anyone who wants to dismiss Conservative warnings about the negative effects of our current immigration policies, judicial and Congressional, better address the author's contentions first. This is exactly the kind of informed discussion we need in order to consider this vital issue. The final section is also exceedingly important. Here in chapter 9, the author discusses ways in which the federal courts can be reined in. We do not have to resort to constitutional amendments, conventions of the states, or other drastic solutions--the author argues the tools are already in the Constitution. Explicitly, the author is pointing to the ability of Congress to limit the jurisdictional reach of the lower federal courts and to a lesser extent the Supreme Court. Without jurisdiction, no court can act in a designated area. The important McCardle Supreme Court decision recognized and accepted this Congressional authority. Also, Congress controls judicial appointments; can set terms and perhaps even impose requirements for supermajority or unanimous decisions; let impeachments fly; and dictates the size of the Court and its budget. But the jurisdictional authority ("jurisdiction striping") of Congress is the primary device the author advocates. In his final chapter, the author urges quick action for he believes time is short to deal with this judicial crisis.A fine book which I ended up liking quite a lot to my surprise. The book's contributions in explaining immigration issues and the jurisdictional resources of Congress are primary in my opinion among many others. A most worthwhile book to spend some time with.

This book was fascinating. I had never heard about Asimov before coming across this book, but will definitely seek out more by him.

With this book I completed reading a series of 16 books in the order recommended as the story unravels - listed below. (Robot, Empire, and Foundation series).Foundation and Earth offers a nice closure tying events well with the Robot series however, he only goes 500 years into the Sheldon Plan leaving the reader to wonder how the Plan worked in the end.Although Asimov left an opening for the next book which never happened, I was not so much bothered by the cliffhanger as much by the 500 remaining years of the Sheldon Plan. One can argue those are one and the same but I did not experience it that way.Overall Foundation and Earth was a crescendo after the other five foundation books and the one I liked the most. The whole series: I thoroughly enjoyed the Robot series, but I had to push through some of the Empire books (Pebble in the Sky). Most Foundation books were entertaining and I wanted to go back to reading any chance i got.I am being careful not to give anything away, or at least nothing that you could not find in common places.I gave it fours stars instead of five because on at least one occasion I predicted what will happen. I don't always appreciate such predictability and Asimov had such an amazing imagination that he could have avoid it.This is the recommended reading order:1. I Robot (or The Complete Robot) [ROBOTS]2. The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]3. The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]4. Mirror Image (short story) [ROBOTS]5. The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]6. Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]7. The Stars, Like Dust [EMPIRE]8. The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]9. Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]10. Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]11. Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]12. Foundation [FOUNDATION]13. Foundation and Empire [FOUNDATION]14. Second Foundation [FOUNDATION]15. Foundation's Edge [FOUNDATION]16. Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]

Asimov must have intended this to finish off his Foundation series - which it did, during his lifetime, although he did write a final Foundation “prequel” book before his death. This is why he circles back to robots (his best stories, in my opinion) in the end.But the language is ponderous and tedious, the plot line thin and predictable, and the characters thoroughly unlikeable. I quickly got sick of “dear chap” and “old fellow,” Trevize’s constant “why did I choose this path” repetitions each chapter (the reader surely had not forgotten, but maybe Asimov the writer had), his ongoing antipathy and sniping remarks to Bliss and Fallom. Fallom, actually, is the only mildly believable and clearly sympathetic character - and is ridiculed and put down by the main character over and over again. It’s not a boring book, and like all Asimov the science is sound. But despite having the same three characters for two straight books he never got them developed. “Classic SF” - thankfully, it’s gone now.

I am an avid reader of Isaac Asimov and have re-read the three main novels time and again over the last 30 years. In those books he occasionally devolves the story into near-meaningless banter between two characters. Alas, this novel is mostly made of such banter and the plot was predictable from reading the first few chapters. Not his best work.

Science fiction literature has been part of my reading since my early teens. My earliest readings contained, by today's standards, relatively tame sexual interludes and of course assured my continued reading. Sexuality in this example of Asimov's writing is really quite tame, but would have kept the 14 year old me entranced. The adult me is impressed with the mature sexual attitudes taken in this story. Beyond all that Asimov provokes mature conjecture about humanity and profound philosophical conjectures about broad questions, not only of human governance, but also human interactions across different worlds and cultures. This book like many of his benefits from Dr. Asimov's excellent education and his being present at the cutting edges of physics and science during some of its most profound advances. He refers to things like the uncertainty principle in an off hand way that does require a bit from the reader. In summary, Dr. Asimov gives us very entertaining stories interspersed with thought provoking philosophy and sophisticated scientific references. It's a very satisfying book to read.

Foundation and Earth picks up right where Foundation's Edge left of as Trevize, Perolat and Bliss continue their search for Earth. The entire story-line includes the famous wit found in all Asimov's novels but seems to pack in even more intrigue than normal as it slowly becomes clear that something even greater than the Seldon plan may be at play. The story is very fast paced making it difficult to put this book down and it stretches the imagination more than any of the previous books. Asimov uses this final book to tie in both the Robot series and the Foundation series as well as clear up many other questions left open in his prior novels. The result is a very satisfying conclusion the the Foundation series.***For those new to the series, here are the specific seven books tied directly into the Foundation story line and their original date of publication. I read these in the order they were published and was very happy to have chosen that order. Asimov also tied in some of this other book series into this one (specifically his Robot series) thus making the entire story line a much larger volume of books.Prelude to Foundation (1988)Forward the Foundation (1993)Foundation (1951)Foundation and Empire (1952)Second Foundation (1953)Foundation's Edge (1982)Foundation and Earth (1986)

This text was pretty outdated so it had some references like "someday all planes will be equipped with GPS." My husband took a class that required this textbook so we've had a good chuckle at that comment. He says he'd give the text a 1-2 stars.

I used the first edition in some research and the university library years ago. The second edition is even more comprehensive. I'm glad to add this to my own library.

This book was obviously intended for the experienced navigator or system designer. It certainly reviews all of the traditional and modern navigation systems. However, in trying to explain every minute detail, the basic workings of the technology are never explained. The average reader will have a very difficult time in just trying to understand how a GPS or VOR or DME system works. A search on the web will present much better explanations. This is, by far, not a quick read, it is burdened by volumes of mathematics that are of little practical use, and the chapters, written by different authors, are often disjoint.Simple, key explanations are mentioned (if at all) after pages of technical confusion. It is as if the author could spend several pages explaining to the average desert nomad how to build a snowman in every minute detail -- how to grow the carrot for the nose, how to pick out the best black rocks for the eyes, how to make the body round to "n" degrees of precision -- but he forgets to mention (until page 89) that, oh by the way, you need to have cold weather and snow to make one.

Engineers and pilots alike will appreciate this book if they skim the math and read it as a survey text, as all possible functional behavior is described for GPS, GLONASS, Inertial systems, VOR, DME, ILS, and more. The intro to the math involved is good, as it walks the line between satisfying a mathematician's love of state space and spherical trig, while not losing the average reader. As an Avionics Systems Engineer tasked with avionics integration, I found the right level of detail when the book describes electronic hardware, software requirements, and system error sources. As a "cover-to-cover" exercise, the reader is advised that this book asks for a high level of commitment. Read a chapter or two at a time (with trash novels in between), the reader's curiosity will sustain him /her for the duration of this well written book.

This book covers many important navigation systems including GPS. However, I felt like there were some details missing in the first few chapters. Simple things that I was not aware of prior to this book, such as heading 90 degrees due west, were not easy for me to understand. I had never been exposed to this type of lingo. Hence, I would not recommend this book for an undergraduate course.

Buying Gay: How Physique Entrepreneurs Sparked a Movement (Columbia Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism), by David K. Johnson

Review

This deeply researched book expands our understanding of pre-Stonewall gay male activism by describing a bold group of physique photographers, magazine publishers, and booksellers who were more militant than the Mattachine Society and built a far larger constituency through their explicit portrayal and defense of homoerotic desire. A revelatory and compelling history. (George Chauncey, author of Gay New York)What do 1950s muscle magazines, gay booksellers, and pen-pal networks have to do with the LGBTQ movement? A great deal more than you might think. In this compelling book, David Johnson unearths stories of shrewd businessmen and hungry consumers who, through asserting their right to sell and buy and read what the law tried to ban, challenged repression, fostered gay community, and helped to build a movement. (Leila J. Rupp, author of A Desired Past: A Short History of Same-Sex Love in America)Johnson’s convincing fleshy history challenges conventional wisdom, arguing that what we have called the ‘homophile era’ (defined by 1950s and 1960s gay rights social movements) was actually ‘the physique era’―when the market of homoerotic fitness magazines and mail-order commerce produced a much larger imagined community and had arguably more significant legal impact. (Lucas Hilderbrand, author of Paris is Burning: A Queer Film Classic)David K. Johnson’s Buying Gay is a groundbreaking work that reshapes how we think about queer history and its political movements. Johnson explores the barely underground world of pre-Stonewall publishing that shaped LGBT life, politics, and promotion of a gay identity. Johnson’s lucid writing and enthralling story startlingly remaps and complicates movement history, suggesting that an army of consumers cannot lose. (Michael Bronski, author of A Queer History of the United States)Offering a deeply researched, panoramic view of a world that had not yet received a serious scholarly treatment, Johnson persuasively shows that gay consumer culture developed earlier than we imagined. A landmark intervention in LGBTQ history. (Timothy Stewart-Winter, author of Queer Clout: Chicago and the Rise of Gay Politics)Filling unfortunate gaps in the historiographies of business, capitalism, and consumption, Buying Gay is an exciting, innovative, original, and groundbreaking new study of gay consumer culture in the 1950s and 1960s. (Marc Stein, author of The Stonewall Riots: A Documentary History)In this intelligent work, historian Johnson . . . makes a compelling case that, in contrast to the academic tendency to dismiss physique magazines as mere artifacts of closeted life, physique entrepreneurs went on to found other businesses and ultimately created ‘a gay market.’ . . . Johnson draws on archival evidence and original interviews in prose that remains accessible even as it demonstrates his scholarly chops. This excellent history brings to light a little-known subject with a well-supported, unusual argument. (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

Buying Gay - David K Johnson (2019)The title peaked my interest immediately, and then I saw that two of my friends (George Chauncey and Lucas Hilderbrand) wrote blurbs for it, I was hooked. They wrote..."This deeply researched book expands our understanding of pre-Stonewall gay male activism by describing a bold group of physique photographers, magazine publishers, and booksellers who were more militant than the Mattachine Society and built a far larger constituency through their explicit portrayal and defense of homoerotic desire. A revelatory and compelling history." (George Chauncey, author of "Gay New York")"Johnson’s convincing fleshy history challenges conventional wisdom, arguing that what we have called the ‘homophile era’ (defined by 1950s and 1960s gay rights social movements) was actually ‘the physique era’―when the market of homoerotic fitness magazines and mail-order commerce produced a much larger imagined community and had arguably more significant legal impact." (Lucas Hilderbrand, author of "Paris is Burning: A Queer Film Classic")I agree with them. This is the perfect book for me, as I have long had a deep interest in this period of gay publications, and have captured a number of examples you can read on my website, Houston LGBT History. To me reading about these publishers gave them an almost heroic role in our history. I already well knew the names Bob Mizer, Donald Webster Cory, Lynn Womack, Lloyd Spinar and Conrad Germain, Clark Polak, and a few more, so it was fun to dig into what, besides commercial success, drove them. They endured much hardship while the government strove to shut them down and they did what few others tried, they fought back in court. This resulted in years of costly lawsuits, arrests and persecution, but had the result of a series of Supreme Court wins on the side of civil rights. These were the pre-Stonewall battles of our political history that certainly deserve more recognition.

Do you remember the emotional importance of finding printed representation that reflected your innermost desires, that presented the male body for study and admiration at leisure, rather than furtive glances? For gay men of a certain age, the answer most surely is “yes.”In this book, David K. Johnson makes a compelling case for understanding how the physique publications - and their publishers, photographers, and artists - created a social “space” that allowed non-heterosexual men to imagine - and to begin to create - a community based upon non-heterosexual cultural values. Johnson’s work is very well researched, very readable, and very important to understanding how these magazines were a vital step toward gay men’s coming out processes in the middle part of the Twentieth Century. A valuable addition to our understanding of the developent of gay male identity and community in 20th Century America.

Buying Gay by David K. Johnson is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-February.Paper trade, literature, men’s physique magazines, and their luring, daring, beefcake muscular, even classically Greek and sometimes racially diverse qualities. This book goes over the rise of magazines, publishing houses, and photo studios, as well as specialization of product, subscriptions, and merchandising. Therein, unfortunately, lies the underbelly of police raids, backlash from morality groups, hate mail, and the scrutiny of penpal lists for unfounded witchhunt accusations of obscenity and pedophilia; also, there's the personal determination of photographs being art or smut, macho or vain. Oh, and I experienced a lot of hometown pride when I learned about DSI's (Directory Services Inc) origins out of Minneapolis and being protected by Meshbesher in court.

Excellent history of physique magazines in the postwar era, showing how these and other homosexual publications offered gay men a chance to engage with the gay community like nothing else had in the United States.

During the 1950s and 60s, magazines focusing on the male form exploded across the United States, and yet their academic value has mostly been ignored. These magazines, created largely by and for gay men created a “gay market” which ultimately crafted the bones for the broader gay movement. Fortunately and finally, historian David K. Johnson has thrown back the curtain on this period which he has dubbed the Physique Era of gay American history. For many, on first examining these publications, it might be easy to dismiss them. Most contain images of “beefcakes” somewhat awkwardly, somewhat suggestively posing in revealing straps. And yet, Johnson successfully captures their formation as the genesis to a broader movement. Bob Mizer might have been pushing the bounds for male art photography for commercial purposes when he founded the Athletic Model Guild, but there’s a compelling argument that he laid the groundwork for a broader social movement in the process.Johnson’s research, pulling from a wealth of archives and personal interviews, is beautifully constructed. He approaches this obviously as a scholar, but understands how to pull back and keep everything accessible to a broader audience. The result is a text that’s both academic and breezy. This is even more remarkable as Johnson explores beyond Mizer’s beginnings. Plenty of other magazines were publishing at this time, and they receive attention. Then there’s the Adonis Male Club, a pen pal service; Lynn Womack’s gay book club; and the business directories of Directory Services, Inc. What connects all of these institutions aside from the gay factor is the adversity they faced from the American government. These sections, discussing specific actions and court cases and the resulting uprising, are the most engrossing.Buying Gay is nothing short of a triumph for gay scholarship.Note: I received a free ARC of this book through NetGalley.
