Review

As a physician and practitioner of integrative medicine, I find this book exciting and optimistic because it suggests new, nonharmful possibilities for solving serious problems that affect our health and the health of our environment. Paul Stamets has come up with those possibilities by observing an area of the natural world most of us have ignored. He has directed his attention to mushrooms and mycelium and has used his unique intelligence and intuition to make discoveries of great practical import. I think you will find it hard not to share the enthusiasm and passion he brings to these pages.--From the foreword by Andrew Weil, MD, author of Eating Well for Optimum Health “Stamets is a visionary emissary from the fungus kingdom to our world, and the message he’s brought back in this book, about the possibilities fungi hold for healing the environment, will fill you with wonder and hope.“ --Michael Pollan, author of The Botany of Desire “This is the kind of book I love: highly factual and practical and mixed with the spiritual content that sets the great writers apart from all the rest.“--John Norris, former deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration and founder of the Bioterrorism Institute “This is the first book to give the Kingdom of the Fungi its proper place in the scheme of things. It is the most important book on nature that I’ve seen in years.”  --Gary Lincoff, author of National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms “A paradigm-changing book. Stamets’s visionary insights are leading to a whole new understanding of how mushrooms, scarcely seen and rarely appreciated, regulate the earth’s ecosystems.“  --John Todd, founder and president of Ocean Arks International “This visionary and practical book should be an instant classic in the emerging science of how to use nature’s wisdom and fecundity to rescue the earth and ourselves from the unwelcome consequences of human cleverness.“ --Amory B. Lovins, chief executive officer of Rocky Mountain Institute “This gospel of fungi contains crucial pragmatic solutions showing us how to work with nature in order to heal nature.”  --Kenny Ausubel, founder and co-executive director of Bioneers “In his respectful and casual way, Paul brings depth and clarity to the complexity of fungi and its place in the natural order, all the while engaging us in fungi knowledge for healing our planet.” --Guujaaw, president of the Haida Council, Haida Nation “Stamets’s best work to date, Mycelium Running provides a wealth of information showing how fungal mycelia and mushrooms can profoundly improve the quality of human life. Should be mandatory reading for government policy makers.” --S. T. Chang, professor emeritus, Chinese University of Hong Kong

Bought for daughter but I checked it out before I gave it to her. It is a monumental work. Page 41 even has a chart with an X-column (vertical) listing of about 30 mushrooms, and a "Y" row of cancers listed, If a mushroom is good for treating a certain kind of cancer it is checked for that where the lists intersect on the chart. There is probably no other books on the market like this, although the author recommends some other books as well (for true mushroom devotees) - some not even his.Was thinking of buying a copy for myself.

Paul Stamets does a GREAT job at showing how Mycelium/Mushrooms are a crucial part of our environment. How it completes the Cycle-of-Life, by transferring energy from the Dead to the Living; through Soil.A complimentary Book to Mycelium Running, would be "The Nature and Properties Soils - By Ray R. Weil, et al"Its a comprehensive breakdown on the Properties of Soil in the Environment (including Manipulating Weather) and the medium by which most Mycelium thrives.THANK YOU PAUL, FOR GIVING US "BUSY PEOPLE" ACCESS TO YEARS OF RESEARCH IN ONE PLACE!--Umar Ramirez

This book is SO good. Really. If you have found yourself in the unique position in life as to have noticed something truly mesmerizing about mushrooms and more importantly fungus, and it's relationship with all life on our big, beautiful, blue, bowling ball of a planet you will appreciate the incredibly profound yet effortless way Stamets communicates his ideas, and deep philosophy that seemingly weaves it's way from the mycelium through Stamets and into our brains reminding us of the tiny miracles that make up our lives and help life succeed yet go completely unnoticed; even though "they" are all around us ;)

I've been Gathering wild mushrooms for my own use 4 years and I've always been fascinated by the endless variety of these incredible fungi but until I read stamets book I had no idea that I was just barely touching the periphery of a endless world. Read this book it will change your life.

Wow, this teaches you how to go mushy crazy!Basically just tenents of how to win the contaminant colonization race with mycelium to mushy fruiting goodness! In the end, the conclusion is to combine mycorrihzal, endophytic, and basidiomycete fungi for the ultimate garden humus and garden production.

It’s hard to overstate the genius of Paul Stamets. He is a radical thinker who is vastly beyond his time. Yet, he’s here now and has written a beautiful book. Completely accessible to people like me who have a burgeoning interest in mushroom hunting, fascinated by the basic principles of mycology. I’m still reading but can’t put it down. The writing is modern, punchy, & incisive without being overwrought. This book is a great gift to humankind and inspires a boots-on-the-ground attitude towards sustainability and being a better, more responsible steward of the earth’s resources. I predict he will win a Nobel prize for his constant innovation before too long. Highly recommend.

This is the complete and authoritative text on fungi and our future concerning the benefits of mycelium. If you're just getting into fungi, this is the definitive text. Stamets is the man! If you review the book by looking inside, you'll notice a high level of documentation on his part. Some of it may be over the head of some of us who aren't very science oriented, or haven't had much biology, but the effect is clear in any regard, and I can say my novice understanding of the field as one coming from philosophy and anthropology, and as a technical writer, has been greatly expanded. I've taken the time to pay attention to the science, as well. All one needs to do is refresh themselves in conjunction with the text by doing a little online research, thus, it's like taking a course in fungi. This book is greatly loved by me.

Paul Stamets is a fungal god! He has inspired me to cultivate my own gourmet mushrooms plus a couple other side projects for my own psychological transcendence. Thanks for such a great book and excellent microscopy images!
