Bri McCoy didn't always like to cook. She was born with health issues and therefore had a hard time learning to eat post birth. However, after getting married, she tried her hand in the kitchen and realized she had found a new calling. Bri started a blog called Our Savory Life in which she shared recipes and tricks she had learned from her experiments with cooking. Lo and behold, she got a book deal and wrote this delectable book called Come and Eat in which she speaks to how God created meals as something more than just a source of sustenance. Growing up in an Italian family, I learned that cooking for someone was how you showed you loved them. Bri's take on cooking doesn't sound that far off... Bri shares how she learned that sharing a meal leads to intimacy unlike other types of socialization. She writes, "When we create space for people to open their mouths, they just might do something more than eat. They just might open their hearts too." She tells stories of how friends opened up more when she and her husband had them for dinner than they had during their weekly Bible Study meetings. She shares the brokenness of paying to take teenage prostitutes to dinner in Thailand so they could have a reprieve for the night. She also tells of the bonding that happens when you invite others- even your own family-to the table and sit and spend time with them. Jesus knew the importance of the dining experience which is why he invited himself to the house of Zacchaeus. He knew that sitting and sharing a meal with someone was a way to break down barriers and he frequently did it as a way into people's hearts. Even one of his last acts on earth was to eat with his friends at the Last Supper. Eating is a way of survival but God also made it to be enjoyable. Think of your favorite dish and the pleasantness of tasting the flavors as you eat each bite. Think of the times you have lingered at a table with others til all hours because you were having such good conversation. It has even been documented that families who eat together frequently usually have better health and relationships with each other. If this book doesn't inspire you to start cooking or inviting others over for meals, I don't know what will! Bri has such a way of writing that you feel as if you are at her table and she is sharing her deepest secrets with you. At the end of each chapter, she includes a prayer and some prompts to get you thinking about how you can incorporate hospitality in your own home. Bri writes that you don't have to be a gourmet chef to host people in your home. (Though she does include great recipes to try if you want to go that route.) All you need to do is go out of your comfort zone and look for opportunities to bring people together around your table. There is no need for a fancy house or "pinterest-worthy" table settings just the invitation to "Come and Eat." Or as we say in Italy, "Mangia!"I was given an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Bri McKoy posted a photo on some promo materials with this quote that is also found in the book: “I believe everyone has at least one life-defining moment that happens at a table—and probably many more—but we won’t experience those powerful moments if we’re not showing up in the first place.”McKoy has done the world a great service by writing a book that challenges us to get out of our comfort zones and invite strangers to our tables. She doesn't just convict us and leave us. She has written a wonderful “WHY,” “HOW-TO,” “WHAT NOT TO BE AFRAID OF” that includes Prayers, Recipes (Shopping List included!) Conversation Starters, Games and other valuable information to make your opening your home and, more importantly, your TABLE, an incredible experience. She explains that HOSPITALITY translated from the Greek means “love of strangers.” McKoy shares this verse to bring this point home: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:2) She ends this passage with the following words which to me sums up her message of the entire book:“We look at someone whose background we might not know, whose trials we’ve not yet heard of, whose sins we have not yet seen, and we say, ‘Come a little closer. You look familiar. You look like God."If we choose to see everyone at our table through these eyes, what a difference we will make in how we love others by the simple act of having a meal together.

I set this book aside to read while riding out a coming hurricane. But I couldn't wait. While I should have been making preparations, I opened it and got caught up in its pages. Oh how Bri can tell a story! Like facing down a kangaroo and taking out a giant spider with hairspray in the rainforest. And then there are gems like this: "We know our Rescuer's name. He is not calling us to rescue anyone; he is calling us to pull out a chair and sit amongst the broken." And there are the recipes.I once traveled with Bri to the Dominican Republic. I've heard some of her stories, and she makes me laugh. I've seen her heart and compassion for others. I see her heart in this book. And I'm pretty sure I'll be putting this book into action when these winds recede.

This book was so much more than what I expected. Tbh, I expected it to be family or marriage focused about how eating together and hosting can transform those relationships, but Bri McKoy does that and expands the table to seat everyone and the table to be anything to gather over and share vulnerabilities. She touches on a lot of topics that are uncomfortable, too, but explains why we as Christians---and I'd argue, other human beings---should care about these topics and not bury our heads in the sand, even when it hurts to care. I laughed, smiled, sobbed, and mused throughout this book. This is truly life-changing for me. Be prepared for your perceptions of hospitality, serving, meekness, and more to change and be broadened! BUY. THIS. BOOK!

Over the past few months, the Lord has been speaking to me about connection. Vulnerability. Hospitality. I've gobbled up words and books about how our hearts long for these things. How we need people in our lives with whom we can share heart. How we need a place to make that happen. How oftentimes that place is around a table. In His typical fashion, the Lord literally threw an advanced copy of Bri's book into my lap, and I loved every word I've read. It's spoken to my heart and encouraged me in ways I'm still unpacking and processing. Bri's book is a treasure - one to be read over and over, pages dog-eared at favorite stories and crinkles and spills on the pages of recipes. Bri reminds us gently and with much grace that making room around our table is making room for God. You'll love this book - that much I'll guarantee!
